Hi! A fellow Tar Heel here, congrats on getting into OMSCS! I'm deciding between applying to OMSCS or the BSMS joint program, and your video is very helpful. Just wondering if you've considered the BSMS program of UNC, and if so would you mind sharing about your thoughts behind the decision? Thank you very much!
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! The BSMS at UNC will have more research aspects to it, and obviously will have in person instruction. It is also way more competitive and difficult to get into the BSMS program. The benefit of the BSMS is that it would be faster, but with OMSCS you get to finish it at your own pace. I chose OMSCS and didn’t even a try for the BSMS program because I wanted to start getting a salary and didn’t want to go into debt

Thank you for the video! So what did you decide to go with GT instead of U Texas? What were the most decisive points (other than the registration)? Appreciate your help, I am in the same situation and lost between which program to apply for and get in...

The biggest reason I chose GT was just because it has been around longer and has more course offerings (for now)- I think at this point UT only has 10 courses offered this semester, but I believe that they plan to add 1-2 classes per semester. However, I do worry a little bit that GT may become bloated, as class sizes are already massive and will likely continue to increase as these online master's degree programs become increasingly popular. I've added the second video in this series, in which I reflect on it further: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3bTn6x8bc2jaM0&ab_channel=BryanTruong

Besides Coronavirus, why did you choose online programs instead of being on Campus? If you have a Discord or something I'd like to know more about the process
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don't have a Discord, but I am happy to answer more questions on here or you can add me on LinkedIn. I chose an online program (before being on campus) because I was interested in practical knowledge (as opposed to doing research), and perhaps most importantly, online programs are cheaper and allow you to pursue the master's part time, while working part time!

just realized this was 3 months ago, how did you manage with taking 2 classes? was it too much work or felt manageable?
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 3 жыл бұрын
I think it isn't too much work, but it definitely can be a lot. I'm going to make another video at the end of the semester (which ends first week of December) about my impressions/takeaways after finals, so stay tuned for that. But generally speaking, it has been fine. As a caveat, though, I am taking two courses that are known to be relatively light!

What do you think about oms at this university its really difficult ? and how many simister per year and some people say don't take more than class at first simister if I take two classes per semester how long time it would be take to granduate? Gernerly How many classes do you recommend to take per simister?

question for ut Austin,is it like a more project based online program(meaning there are a lot of coding) or we just need to know the material and take the test
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 3 жыл бұрын
You have to program for both of them no doubt about it- both are masters in computer science programs, so you are going to need to know material as well as code for most classes

Hey man, I actually am not too familiar with the OMSA application process, so I can’t help too much. I do know that there are a lot of crossover classes, though so you definitely can take classes with the Omscs folks too

Why didnt you look into uiuc?
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 5 ай бұрын
To be honest, I thought UIUC was more expensive and pretty much ruled it out at that. GT and UT Austin also just had more brand recognition to me than UIUC

I initially thought my employer will support but didn't work out. So omscs it is. Btw how much time is generally needed to complete, I think 3year+ is the generic. And also how much academic hazing do you think omscs gives.
@bryan_truong
@bryan_truong 5 ай бұрын
@@soumyajitdutta428 I did it in 2.5 years. As for “academic hazing” I didn’t think it was bad. I took some fluff classes to get easy credits here and there though. You can see my full transcript here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjIgaCAadafbdksi=fBl7Bzd4nyyMcHIi
