@@GeosearchInternational Thank you for your reply. I'd like to know if you are also planning to do a tutorial on mapping evapotranspiration in a catchment? It is planned, but at the moment I'm too busy with projects. What do you mean by much too high? Are you sure that you are looking at the actual ET, and not the potential ET (PET)? Also, in the GeoTiff files there will be pixels where there are no values because there is no vegetation. Check what values have been put in these pixels before you do any calculations. Good luck & all the best, Andreas

I first calculated the annual rainfall using CHIRPS data on my area by catchment (equatorial in Gabon). I would then like to estimate the total effective rainfall by subtracting the actual evaporatranspiration from the precipitation.
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational Жыл бұрын
You can get the daily CHIRPS precipitation and MODIS ET as a time series for your catchment from 01 Jan 2000 onwards. You should compare the long term average effective rainfall with the long term recorded flows in the rivers. In some parts of the world it matches very well, but I have had problems near the coast & in mountains. All the best, Andreas

Hi, the reason is that that template is set up for data up to the end of 2020. You need to update the Data-8d data entry sheet & make sure that there is an extra day at the bottom for the end of the year (31/12/2022). Also make sure that you update Date-1d, with all days between 01/01/2000 and 31/12/2022 & that the formulas go to the bottom of the table. Great Tutorial! I am interested in getting PET data from specific lat and longs in Florida. What approach would you recommend?
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 8 ай бұрын
Hi Mohkam, Your can try to download data from at a point location, but be careful as each MODIS pixel is 500*500m, and PET can only be calculated if that pixel includes some vegetation. If the area is bare rock or concrete (e.g., some parts of urban areas), you will not get any data. I have had this experience from locations at airports. In this case, just increase the size of the location - for example using a 1x1km or 2x2km square centred at your coordinates. All the best, Andreas

To start with, I just inputed the Florida shape file and requested the data. Still waiting on the data but do they send you a geodatabase that can be used to extract info for specific lat longs? because I have over 2000 points, not sure if extracting it point by point is a good idea unless there is a way to input all of them together. The way MODIS algorithm works is that it needs vegetation in a pixel to calculate ET and PET. If you get no data it is probably because your location is barren ground. Even for point locations I would always use a polygon of at least 1 km2 or larger. Also check that there is vegetation in the area. All the best, Andreas

Thank you so much for your videos. I have learnt a lot from you videos, well explained and with a lot of practical information. I want to ask you a question? In my catchment which is made of several land use classes such as rice field, forest, agricultural land, urban etc. So my land use shapefile has polygons representing land use types. I was able to download the MODIS ET for the entire catchment. However, I am interested in only the forest ET. Is it possible to download MODIS ET only for Forest polygons? I selected Forest polygon and exported as shapefile So that I use it to download the MODIS ET but I realized it picks the outside boundary and does not exclude the holes created by other land use classes. Please advise me. Thank you.
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for an interesting question. What you need is a forest polygon shape file, that consists of a separate polygon for each piece of forest. i.e., with a separate fid number. Make sure that there is only 1 polygon for 1 piece of forest. i.e., polygons, not multi-polygons and that there are no holes in the polygons. When you run the Extract-Area request in AppEEARS, it will calculate the mean ET for each polygon separately. In the statistics file you will get a big table with all the data, and you will need to allocate which code belongs to which polygon. In the Statistics file the polygon code is under "aid" - for example aid0001, aid0002, aid0003 etc, which is generally the consecutive number in which each polygon is listed in the shape file. Make sure to check it in the View Area Sample window. You can select the different polygons in the feature drop-down list and see where they plot on the map. Alternatively you can upload a bunch of point locations and get the data via the point sample request. See: ameriflux.lbl.gov/extract-and-explore-geospatial-data-appeears/ All the best, Andreas

Perfect video. Can this data be used in crop water requirement calculation as an alternative of penman method for Et0
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eray, I would say "yes" because the ET algorithm of MOD16 is based on the Penman-Monteith equation (Monteith, 1965), and the data has been calibrated against flux towers and regional water balances. Of course there is continuous improvement to the algorithm. We have version 6 now, but 6.1 is under processing and will be ready early next year. So it is still in progress & continuously getting better. Basically, you need to check how well the data performs in your area - check it against local field data & then decide if it is OK or not for your purposes. All the best, Andreas

Thank yoou sir so much. i have a question. Would you be knowing the method APPEARS uses to calcute this evapotranspiration? would it be something like SEBAL method etc?
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, The evapotranspiration is calculated by the MODIS MOD16 ET product. See the previous video for details: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaPCZ5yiZaqJn9k AppEEARS is just an online app that makes it easy to download and transformation the exact data you need. We use the catchment polygon to cut out the area we are interested in, and also determine which time range we need. Think of AppEEARS like a cookie cutter which extracts the data we need from MODIS. ooooh i finally figured it out. Let me inquire about this: Would the Algorithm pickout the ET data in area containing a city and Enough vegetation?
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenowenokwang4152 From what I have observed, as long as there is some vegetation around you get PET/ET data from an area, even in urban areas. Parts of the desert which are classified as bare rock give no data. If you use a polygon you are in any case taking the average of a larger area, so more likely to get PET/ET values. If you use a point sample, it can result in no data or intermittent data depending on if vegetation is present or not. Usually there are meteorological observation sites in cities, so this is a good opportunity to compare MODIS with "official" data. All the best, Andreas

Hi Kody, The current template goes till end 2022. Not sure if the gap filled ET data is already available for all of 2023. You can easily expand the tables. (1) Add rows to the bottom of the Data-8d sheet. Make sure to add the last day of the year at the bottom and be careful with the calculations for ET & PET for the previous day. (2) In sheet Data-1d expand the table at the bottom by copy-pasting all the dates from Data-8d. The rest of the columns should fill themselves automatically as they use formulas to harvest data from Data-8d. All the best, Andreas

Hi Phub Dem, You need to look at the manual: lpdaac.usgs.gov/documents/494/MOD16_User_Guide_V6.pdf The high values are codes for areas designated as non-vegetated pixels without ET calculations. You will need to blank them out. In AppEEARS the time series is already corrected for the scale factor, but I'm not sure if that applies to the GeoTIFF. You may have to correct: Real_value = Valid_data * Scale_Factor All the best, Andreas

@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational Жыл бұрын
Hi Sebastian, yes you are right. The annual potential evapotranspiration (PET) in an arid area like a desert can be up to 3,000 mm. However that assumes that there is an unlimited amount of water available for evapotranspiration. Usually the precipitation is much less - say a few hundred mm, and a lot of it becomes surface runoff so the actual amount of evapotranspiration will be limited to what is left over in the soil. That is why there is a big difference between PET and ET. All the best, Andreas

Can the pet and aet be presented on grid format with time series analysis for each grid cell? Does the data (precipitation and evapotranspiration) need bias correction for different locations?
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Raghwendra, In AppEEARS you can download the data as a NetCDF or GeoTIFF files if you want to perform other analysis in QGIS or whatever GIS software you use. However, if you want to get a time series for a particular point location, the easiest way is to extract the data using a point in AppEEARS, rather than a polygon as I did in the video. However, you need to keep in mind that that average time series over a catchment will be much more accurate than data from a point location. My understanding of the errors is: MODIS ET is quite accurate in most locations, but may underestimate ET over irrigated areas. CHIRPS precipitation has more errors near the sea and in mountainous areas. The errors seem to reduce if you use longer timescales - e.g., months rather than days, and also if you use larger catchment areas. As for bias correction, there are some tools available, but you should only try them if you have good quality ground data. After correction, you need to see if it actually improves the water balance - e.g. predicted versus actual stream flows in your basin model, or not... All the best, Andreas

Hi Swanu, you could try to extract data using a point location, but remember that MODIS uses a 500x500 metre pixel sizes, so you will get an average number for ET/PET over that pixel... and it will only give you data if that pixel has some vegetation. All the best, Andreas

Thank you for the video! Did some crossvalidation with actual ET data and got surprised with how precise it was. Can the same be done with precipitation data?
@GeosearchInternational
@GeosearchInternational 2 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome Alejandro. In which part of the world did you do your cross-validation? For precipitation I recommend the CHIRPS dataset with a 10km resolution. See my video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioG2f2pngNqCi68 The only thing you need to be careful of is that CHIRPS is less accurate near coastal regions, but I think it is great for looking at trends and also to compare different ungauged catchments in the same region. All the best, Andreas

Hi Alejandro, That's great! Let me know if CHIRPS also works there. In Vietnam I used MODIS & CHIRPS to estimate average long-term runoff & in some inland areas it was within 98% of measured flows. All the best, Andreas

Excellent & very relevant question which we should all ask ourselves! Please have a look at: www.chc.ucsb.edu/data/chirps/diagnostics#globalstationdensity Here are some maps by country: data.chc.ucsb.edu/products/CHIRPS-2.0/diagnostics/chirps-n-stations_byCountry/ All the best, Andreas

Hi Andreas, I dropped the catchment area according to the explanation in the video, but there were no results, knowing that the region is located on the borders of Saudi Arabia and Oman. Does this mean that there is no evaporation? Please advise and thank you for the effort.

Hi Abdallgayoum, There will always be some ET, and the PET should be quite high in that part of the world - like 2000 to 3000mm/year. Check that your catchment polygon is in WGS84 geographic coordinates. Also that you have selected the right start and end dates (01-01-2000 to today). Let me know if it works. All the best, Andreas

Hi Abdallgayoum, I have learnt something new today - The MODIS algorithm does not work in Barren or sparsely vegetated areas. I was aware that it does not work in urban areas, but have never tried it in a desert. The whole of your catchment is classified as Barren. To the North of your AOI there is a green area inside the town of Ibri, so there is a single MODIS pixel there of 500x500m which has data. You could use this to get an idea of PET rates for your catchment. In AppEEARS you can go to Extract - Point Sample & use these coordinates for Ibri: 23.22931421248786, 56.50567032434546 I did a job in Umm As Samim many years ago for brine exploration - beautiful place! All the best, Andreas
