It's been nearly 7 years since my arduous quest to get a perfect score on world version in 30 minutes. Times have changed since then. I've improved and so has the map. But how fast can I go? The quest for speed restarts here with this sub 20 minute effort, which includes an unfortunate glimpse at the rear end of an unsuspecting sunbather in the middle of a remote polish field.
PS: How not to travel America news: Episode 7 will be released next Sunday (26th Feb) at 8pm GMT (a day earlier for patreons)

Hey Tom, in the US, if you see an interstate with a 3 digit number, it means it is usually a loop for a 2 digit interstate in a metro area. 494 is a loop to divert around Minneapolis, as is 694, for the primary interstate of 94. Look at any major metro in the US and you'll notice it everywhere.

Hey Tom, For the north of Spain, it's easy to tell what region you're in by the language. Northwest (near Portugal) many signs will be in Galician which resembles Portuguese (words and sounds like o/os, ao, inxao), in central northern Spain it will be in Spanish, and in the Northeast it will be in basque which uses more k, sk, and eu sounds. It's a niche tip but hope this helps if you ever have another northern Spain round!

Hey Tom, little tip on US interstates. All interstates with 3 digit numbers are spur routes of the 2 digit main interstates and usually located in and around urban areas. You can tell what the main interstate is because the last 2 numbers are the same as the primary interstate. In the Minnesota round for example I-494 is an auxiliary of I-94. Once you found I-94 you know that 494 is going to be nearby and likely in a large city which could have helped you find it in Minneapolis quicker. Hope this tip helps, thanks for the great content as always!

Less useful for GeoGuesser, but also if the 3-digit road starts with an EVEN number it’s a bypass or loop. ODD first numbers are a spur. (As always, there are exceptions). There can be multiple identically named 3-digit loops/spurs along an interstate, but not in the same state. And for the non-US players, the interstates are generally N/S or E/W and numbered as such. Odd 2-digit interstates are N/S. Evens are E/W. And they increase in value West to East (5 in California etc., 95 on the East Coast) and increase South to North (8 and 10 along the Mexico border and Gulf of Mexico, 90 and 94 along the northern states).

@theemeralddream7020 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimEubanks there is a similar system in germany: 1 digit indicates cross-national size, 2 digits large regional size and 3 digits small size. As soon as there are 2 or more digits, the first digit indicates the region. Odd numbered highways have N/S alignment, even numbered highways E/W alignment (usually). Also there are no duplicates (germany is not that big).

FYI, Because 494 is an even number, you know that the main Interstate, the 94 (not necessarily the 494 branch) runs East - West. Then, if it is a three digit number, like 494, that means it is a branch OFF the 94. This usually only happens in big cities to get to other locations in the city. So when you see the Shield icon with 494, first thing you should do is go to a main city and look for the 94, then find the bypass branch off of it that is 494. Also, because the third digit 4 is even, you also know that the branch off the 94 rejoins the 94 (bypass route). If it was the 594, you would expect it to not rejoin the 94 (spur route). Another example in LA is the main Interstate is the 5. The bypass route is the 405, to follow the 3 digit numbering convention, they add a zero so 405 is three digits.
@arthurbrowne9379
@arthurbrowne9379 2 жыл бұрын
Must be careful though that the 3 digit interstates can repeat along the main route. going up 95 on the east coast you will pass many 195s, 295s, 395s, 495s, etc.
@thoride_
@thoride_ 2 жыл бұрын
Unsure if you know this already but the road system in the US does actually have a bit of a pattern that could be useful for rounds like the Minnesota one. In short though: Double digit interstates are majors and Odd numbers run north-south with numbers increasing from west to east, while even numbers run east-west with numbers increasing from south to north. Interstate minors are spurs/loops that are 3 digit and the last two digits are usually the major it came off of. if the leading digit is odd, then that means it is a spur and does not connect back, whereas if the first digit is even, then it is a bypass or loop that does connect back to the original major. For example: in the Minnesota stage, you found a sign for interstate 494, which using the info above is defined as a loop off of 94, therefore you could look for 94 and then go to the nearest major city that may require a loop as 494 will probably be there, similarly, you could just go straight to looking for cities since you know it's a loop, and loops only exist around major cities as they have demand for it. In this case that would've been Minneapolis. here's a really good video by CGPgrey who does a much better job at explaining than I do: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnfRkGZmdqlqhs0 Thanks for the amazing content as per usual!

It pays to know road numbering logic. In the US, odd numbers go North-South, starting East (1) to West (101), and even numbers go East to West, starting North (2) to South (98). A 1XX or 2XX is an offshoot of highway "XX", usually around a city. There's more to it, but if you only have an interstate number to go with, it can point in the right direction.

Some help on US interstates - 3 digit numbers are spurs and loops/bypasses. If they start with an odd number, they are a spur off the main interstate, so like I-195 spurs off of I-95. If an even number, they loop back around to their originating route, and are often loops/bypasses around cities. So if you were looking for I-495, you'd probably find I-95 easily because it's the main interstate, then look for where it seems to branch off and make a loop back onto itself. Other rules are odd numbered single and double-digit routes will run north/south and even run east/west. Odd route numbers increase west->east and even route numbers increase south->north. So, as an example, Connecticut has I-95 and I-84 while San Diego has I-5 and I-8. There's certain routes where it's sort of an exception because they were planned a certain way but never completed or have since been extended beyond what they used to be.

Just a tip, at least in Sweden (but most likely Norway as well), banks aren't named like in the UK and Ireland, where you have regional branches, except for one type of bank which has a system like that but there the regions are small and usually have historical names (from old hundreds or parishes) that you won't find on a modern map (like "Färs & Frosta Sparbank"). If it says "Sparebanken", then that is the name of the actual bank, and "Narvik" is then the actual location of it. There could be the odd exception, but this holds well as a general rule.
@matldb
@matldb 2 жыл бұрын
Its not always like that in Norway nowadays. Tom was lucky, because the name of the bank could have been Sparebank1 Nord-Norge (northern norway), which indicate the region, and not the town/city. Almost all of the smaller banks are phased out and the largest banks often buy them so the town still has a option.

Whenever you see a three digit US interstate (blue and red symbol) example 494, this designates that it's a brother/sister interstate of the bigger 94. So if you find the 94, the 494 would be along it and usually in a bigger city. When you get to the northeast this doesn't work as nice due to the density of interstates but in the midwest, south and west it usually works very well.

Tom, I'd recommend you watch CGP Grey's video on the US interstate system, "The Internet's Forgotten Code". 8 minutes, entertaining, and will explain how to decipher interstate numbers. They are a tool that you can use to find your location fairly quickly within the US, without needing city or state names. Pretty helpful!

Round 5 trivia: When you see LKAB it is either Kiruna or Luleå, Sweden or Narvik, Norway. LKAB a Swedish state-owned mining company based in Kiruna. The ore from the mines is transported via Malmbanan (Ore track) by train to Narvik for ocean transport. The HQ is located in Luleå.

Here’s a U.S Tip - typically the freeways that are in the 200’s, 300’s, or 400’s will be circular routes around major cities. They’ll share the next two numbers with the main interstate line that goes through the city (so the 494 circles the twin cities in Minnesota, while the 94 goes through the state).

Don't forget that U.S. Interstate highways use a numbering scheme, where "494" means "a loop of I-94 around a major city". The leading "4", being even, tells you it's a looping bypass as opposed to a spur or connector, denoted by odd numbers.
@CopeML
@CopeML 2 жыл бұрын
In the U.S. Interstates that are even numbered go East to West, Odd numbered Go north to south, Major interstates that cross multiple states with few exceptions end in either 0 or 5, lower numbers interstates start in the south west corner of the U.S. and increase in number as you go north-eastward. Interstates that don't end in a 0 or a 5 are newer bypasses that connect around the outskirts of major cities but connect to a highway of the first number, a 3 digit interstate is a bypass that connects around a major city typically back to the same interstate with the same last two digits. U.S. Highways marked with a white shield start in the North-East corner of the U.S. and increase incrementally towards the south-west, the same numbering scheme applies as with Interstates except in the opposite direction and are more regionalized. State highways typically link one town to another and may not follow a numbering scheme depending on the state. Typically county roads start with the lowest number closest to the county seat or major township of the county it resides in.

Tip for America- a 3 digit interstate will be a spur off of a main interstate (usually around bigger towns). So 494 will be off of 94. 295 will be off of 95, etc.

In the final one, you immediately zoomed in on the "LKAB" on the other side of the fjord. That's Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB ("inc"), which means you're either in Kiruna, Gällivare or Luleå in Sweden, or in Narvik in Norway. Kiruna and Gällivare are inland, and Luleå is significantly flatter (and more dilapidated) than Narvik.

Helpful tip for the forth round that allowed me to know the exact region of Portugal that he was in; the wine growing region behind Porto (the Duoro Valley) is world famous for its wineries that grow their grapes on tiered terraces along the valleys walls. Right from the starting point, you can see the tiered terraces (something totally unique for Europe) and therefore know its probably the Duoro Valley

I see plenty of people mentioning the interstate numbers, but no one commenting on the telephone numbers on the trash cans. Though if that has been mentioned somewhere I do apologize in advance. In the US, the first three digits of our telephone numbers are the area code. Large cities generally have multiple area codes, but most places have just one code to cover a fairly large area. The telephone number for "Randy's," starting with 763, tells you that "Randy's" is likely _headquartered_ in the northwest Minneapolis region. I'm italicizing "headquartered" here because, as you'll notice, the spot wasn't actually on that side of the city. Area codes are not nearly as specific as they were in the landline days of old, what with the advent of mobile phones, but just knowing those three digits _might_ significantly narrow down your search area. However, there is also the possibility that it's a either a really tiny or really large business with either one guys cellphone or headquartered on the opposite side of the country. Whether an telephone area code can be trusted as a shortcut or not really depends on what the numbers being used for. A phone number on a huge expensive billboard could possibly be anywhere near or far while a number on a public service like trash collection would more likely (but in no way certainly) be in the same city (or at very least in the same region) as it's bins. An area code is not guaranteed to be used only in the region said code encompasses, but it has the potential to help nonetheless. I'll close off by mentioning in passing that exchange codes (the next three digits in our telephone numbers) also do in fact exist, but are incredibly unreliable, semi-defunct and therefore not relevant here.

When you see a US Interstate with 3 digits, it's always a spur or bypass in an urban area connecting to the 2-digit Interstate with the same last 2 digits. I-494 could really be nowhere but in the Minneapolis metro area since that's the only major Minnesota city I-94 goes through.

I did a double take on the Minnesota one my aunt used to live in that neighborhood. There are some interstate numbering rules- 1 and 2 digit numbers are regular interstate highways. Even numbers run east-west and odd numbers run north-south. In general numbers also increase as you go west to east or south to north. There are a few exceptions where interstates cross each other (74 is north of 70 as it should be west of Indianapolis but south of 70 east of Indianapolis) or new interstates have been built but there are no conforming numbers available. 3 digit numbers are spur or loop routes. They are almost always in a large city and the second 2 digits will tell you what interstate they come off of. If the first digit is even it is a loop that either reconnects to itself or connects to another interstate. For example 494 splits from 94, goes around the south and west sides of Minneapolis/St Paul, then reconnects with 94. They are generally used to avoid the city center. If the first digit is odd it is a spur route. These generally carry traffic into the city center from an interstate. Some 3 digit numbers get reused; there are at least a half dozen 295s between the Canadian border and Miami. If the number has an H in front of it (H1, H2, H3, and H201) it is in Hawaii, more specifically the island of Oahu where Honolulu is located. Alaska and Puerto Rico also have highways that are technically classified as part of the interstate system for funding purposes and have an A- or PR- designation on paper, but are still known and signed with their former name or number.
