85 GM I was sharp compared to old EF and F lenses, but compared to basically any newer Sony E lens it isn't that sharp, even struggles to beat 85/1.8 FE which is sooo much cheaper but at the time of release it was fantastic and it held up pretty well upgrade from Sony side was really needed and so far it looks like they did a good job

The mark 1 had a notorious issue with making a grinding sound while autofocusing. Sony would not officially accept it was a warranty issue, but would replace it you pushed hard enough. Glad to see a new, lighter and faster focusing version. Strangely, I like aesthetic of the old bulbous body. Thanks for an another great video. 🍻

I saw the price at which you can preorder it here in Europe. The GM is RRP at 1799, but you get it new in stores generally for 1500. The new GM II was up for pre order at 2100. That would be about 600 more than the first version. The 50 1.2 is 2299, so the new 85 1.4 would only be 200 less than a 1.2 prime... I was for sure interested in the GM II but not if that is the price hike here in Europe

At 10:25 the side by side portrait shots the new lens gives a much punchier more depth 3D looking image than the old one. Also the Fence and Rope shots with fringing were interesting. The Blue fringe on the white rope makes the image look more 'milky' like comparing a standard LED TV to an OLED TV in image. I'm surpised the conclusion was the new lens is slightly better because it looks WAY better. So much more image pop.

Great video and representation of what the new 85 GM II is and isn't. Sadly, I am actually not too excited about this lens. I am very happy with my Sigma 85mm f/1.4, which I got because the old 85 GM was quite a bit softer, but I would've switched for an 85 f/1.2, which is the lens I expected Sony to make to compete with the Canon and Nikon 85 1.2 lenses. I didn't think they'd make another 85 1.4.

Gerald, I owned the 85mm f1.4 GM version one, and it is soft at f1.4 (all independent tests show that) , and it is slow and noisy in focusing, just a fact. Overweight and overpriced IMHO. I could not match portrait and corporate shots for sharpness and IQ when I shot jobs with both my Sony 135mm f1.8 GM and the version one Sony 85mm f1.4 GM. The 85mm GM shots were just inferior in IQ and sharpness, just a fact. I sold the 85mm GM and got the much better Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG DN lens and most independent testing shows the Sigma is hands-down the best E-mount 85mm lens on the market, sharper, faster focusing, better rendering, less cost than the 85mm GM. I can readily match shots for sharpness and IQ when I use both my Sony 135mm f1.8 GM and my Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG DN on the same job. This new 85mm GM II is really only needed if you need to shoot the 85mm at 30fps on the A1 or 120fps on the A9III. This International Award Winning Pro of 50 years in the business has owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, A7RIV, A7SIII, and currently own A1, A9III, A7RV. For my A7RV, the Sigma is all I would need in an 85mm lens, no need for this more expensive GM II. For fast fps sports shooting, yes the new 85mm GMII would be good for 30fps with my A1, and 120 fps on my A9III. But if Sony would lift its artificial coding restriction on third=party lenses, they could do 30fps and 120fps. Thanks and Cheers from one Gerald to another Gerald.

I went from a Nikon D750 with the relevant Nikon, Tamron and Sigma lenses, up to the S5 II with some only OK lenses (Panasonic S primes, mainly), and found that although each of these upgrades that they make every few years is not very big, over that kind of time (a 2012 camera and 2008/2010 lenses to 2021, 2022 era lenses and body), the difference became really noticable. Now, when I shoot on my D750, the images do like kind of "old", meaning, basically not super sharp and a bit grainy at more than ISO 800. But also, I have lots of printed photos on my wall from 2012, and none from 2024... so...

As the owner of 85GM , I have to say I respectfully dis agree with you when you said : G master 1 is really sharp when against the other lenses," in fact, I found even the cheap Sony 85 1.8 is sharper than my 85 GM at the edge, not to mention other E-mount 85 I own, the Zeiss Loxia 85 is day and night sharper than the 85GM wit much better local contrast, , the Zeiss Milvus 85 1.4 also sharper, and even the Zeiss Batis is sharper than the GM, the original 85 GM it's one I consider with least sharpness 85 mm I own, yes I own all those mentioned.. so I am not surprised at all the GM II is sharper than the GM1, it would be really disappointing if it is not.However, sharpness is not the #1 consideration for portrait lens, that's why I own one at the first place. Looking at the bigger picture, when you compare this new 85 GM II to the competitors 85 1.2, I would say the GM II is still fall behind a little bit, as a multiple system user myself, I would still prefer if Sony introduce a 1.2 version with better Bokeh, with that being said, my Z 85 1.2 S and Milvus 85 1.4 is no going anywhere. if some day I really want a native 85 on my Sony platform ( because my GM was sold and anticipating the 85 1.2GM), , I will just pick up a used Sigma 85 dg dn for fractions the cost of the GM.

But if it comes to image quality, like at 8:56, the Z lenses such as the inexpensive Z 85 1.8 S blow the GM lenses off the table. Wide open zero fringing, edge to edge sharp and reliable Nikon water and dust resistant, as the bodies are, for those who can’t imagine what I’m talking about, watch Morten Hilmer’s Z6 III video

If you want something that are more light weight and if you do not need aperture 1.4 or an aperture ring and a AF/MF switch, then go for a used Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* used, got one in 2023 for US $550 (taxes included) in excellent condition, the Zeiss Lens is light and easy to handle, it is a joy to use and I can recommend it.

Been using the original 85mm 1.4 since 2019 and the sharpness can be abit softer at times but it was never really an issue. Especially if you're going for more of a filmic look and don't need clinical sharpness then the gm1 is more than enough. The AF noise is there but primarily in AF-S, almost non existent in AF-C. Would be great to see Sony release a 1.2 in the near future like they did with the 50mm. Don't think I'll be upgrading at this point. Thanks for the review Gerald.

Thanks for the review. Given how mkii improvements have come to many GM optics I was anticipating this upgrade to the slowish focusing 85 original GM from about 2 years ago. Slightly surprised it took this long, but I'm used to being spoiled by Sony and pleased it's now finally here 😊. I will probably buy in due course. Right now I'm honestly not unhappy with the underrated and otherwise terrific value Sony 85mm G f1.8. I'm lucky being able to afford lots of Sony lenses, so will probably buy this as I didn't really rate the original which is why I bought the compact G f1.8. If I do buy I need to consider if I should sell my G. I might just keep both (sorry if that sounds profligate). All I'm saying is this new lens is undoubtedly great, but not an immediate priority for me right now. Sure this mkii will be better, faster focusing, slightly sharper, better in many ways (bar cost and heft') than the 'poot relation' G variant.

Yeah, it's a 9 year difference between lenses, but the original 85 GM - even if not considered to be one of the best GMs - was still a GM-quality prime. It's hard to improve that much when the standard is so high to begin with, but I think a lighter and smaller lens with much faster focusing, quiet focusing, a sharper image, and much less noticeable CA fits the bill, when you're improving on what was considered to be a top-quality lens to begin with. I just wish it was 1.2, as had been rumored.

I dont know what Sony is thinking. This should have been a 1.2 hands down. The 85mm 1.2 is an untapped market for Sony because NOBODY makes a 1.2 for Sony E mount. Not sigma , tamron nobody. This was a complete overlook and trying to compare the sales of the 50mm to estimate what the 85 will do was just dumb. Now when Sigma drops the first 85mm 1.2 for Sony E mount they will regret it . Whoever dropped the 85 1.2 for Sony would've sold like crazy and Sony completely missed the opportunity especially when the Sigma 85 is so close to accuracy of this lens and not that far up. So dumb. Sigma your up, hopefully they do not make the same mistake. It's just crazy to me how the 85 1.2 is untapped and nobody is gonna come get this money. Sigma will make a 1.2 and completely steal the temporary light of the GM II
@youknowwho92474 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree. At 35mm, maybe a 1.2 makes sense, but not at 85. Depth of field at 1.4 is already razor thin and the extra 3rd stop of light is not worth the trade off in weight and price. I'm very happy that Sony went with the sensible and practical option rather than competing in a pointless arms race.

Gerald Please do a crossover with Corridor crew, they are insanely good at knowing cameras but would still be fun to watch

why not compare it with the Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN ?

I'm curious with the Sigma 85 Art being almost as good (in some respects better) than the old GM, the markup is even steeper, and I am not hearing the amazing value provided. Sorry I don't have an A9iii

i think there isn't a huge improvement over c log 3 maybe like 1-1.5 stop increases in terms of dynamic range but yeah i too would love to see a video from gerald on this matter .

If you dont already own an 85 1.4 then this is a great lens to invest in. But if you already do then don't see a compelling reason to "upgrade". If it was a 1.2 then it'd be a different story.

has anyone found any type of distortion on GM 1.

Hi Gerald, I pressed liked for this video. Haha this lens would probably only be mounted on my camera from rentals because I already own a Sigma 85mm f1.4 dg DN; but ya your portrait looks a lot more shaper and more brilliant on my Aorus FI27Q-P. But I have to note though as my a7sIII body gets more firmware updates and Sigma lens gets none and living in a humid environment like Taipei--I have encountered some unable to focus situations where I indeed tried to focus in less than 85cm. So I can see why this lens 85GM II can definitely be better in a paid contract and more controlled situations. Anyways, I recently saw the truly mounted glassses type of lenses; I wish Sigma or Sony could release those and my local vendors or rentals can work with those future conceptual glasses lens rentals (haha just trying to share thoughts in the comment). I really liked this video and I’m done leaving this comment 😂

So basically nothing to write home about. Thanks for the review!

That's exactly what I feel too, faster focus is giving, you can't find any lens with the kind of focus speed as the original GM so we don't need to read any review to know the AF is greatly improved, LOL.

I was using 85 1.4 GM for 5 years, and I don't know if you were lucky, but in video, AF is trash. It can't catch up with the subject at all, and you can hear how hard the motor is trying to move that hufe glass inside. In my opinin, don't get 85 1.4GM I in any cercamstance. It's so bulky that it will always hit your tripod mount or something. The sharpness also says for itself. Get Mark 2 guys, don't even look at the first one, it is probably slowest lense I used on a Sony system, out of 15 lenses at least.

The mark 1 was one of the "weakest" lense in the GM line-up.
@urbanie4 ай бұрын
true, always thought it cant be that bad in terms of AF and then i got to use it. it was all true unfortunately 🤣. what would you say is the weakest lens in the gm lineup? maybe 100mm STF or something

Begins by saying they're not that different and then shows it's better in each and every way. Decent update I would say.

I have the 1.8 version, which to my knowledge is even more ancient than the GM mark 1. Not that I don't want F1.4 or something, but the size is just to great on the 1.8. Maybe someday when / if (STRONG if) I start professional photography then maybe yes, but the F1.8 will remain for now. The aperture ring is tempting though :D Great video!
@QuietOC4 ай бұрын
The F1.8 came out a year after the original GM and supports the full framerates of the A1 and A9III unlike the older GM.
