And to add more, I live in a country where censorship is so highly enforced by the government. A person smoking in a movie would get blurred and for example in the film titled 300 about King Leonidas where there is a lot of stabbing, they cut a lot of those scenes. Even corpses in that movie were blurred. Sex education is considered taboo in my country because they think introducing condoms would encourage the kids to do sexual activity without the risk of getting pregnant. Where does that lead us? My country is high on robbery, a lot of places still have highwaymen, many sexual assault cases happening here and there, and I am even more ashamed to tell you this, many teen even kid pregnancy cases happening across the country. Exactly like the man said in the ending of the vid, censorship doesn't solve the problem. It doesn't need an expert to tell you that much. It makes people oblivious

I don't think they believed that he really thought that Dahmer was a bad guy. They were to dumb to understand why he would make a comic about him if he really thought that. And regardless, they didn't like the fact that he was making money off of Dahmer, either, probably.
@shebreathesingold8043

Because that's not an honest breakdown of what people were copying. The man who was calling Jeffrey Dahmer a pedophile was glorifying serial killers by giving them their own comic books. Kids see a comic book and think "COOL". That's what the audience was reacting to. Meanwhile, this women was calling Dahmer more than awful, but a terrible influence to kids, so much so she doesn't want a comic book anywhere near them. So it's intellectually dishonest to do what he is doing and conflate some media labeling Dahmer an interesting figure with the woman opposing children reading serial killer-based comics.
@MrImmortalFish
@MrImmortalFish 25 күн бұрын
@@shebreathesingold8043 Gosh. Lots to unpack here. Dahmer was not portrayed as an aspirational figure at all, yet you take issue with someone using a niche medium, comic books, to spread awareness of how a horrible person was horrible? You side with the person that wants to prevent that information from getting out? Why have you decided that people do not have the right to purchase what they want to purchase and spend their money as they see fit? When did you decide it was a great idea to become a book burner? Are you aware that comics and cartoons are not consumed exclusively by children? Do you know the average age of a person that buys comic books? Are you one of the socialists that will save democracy this autumn? How do you feel about all the graphic LMNOPQ- books in the school libraries? How did Joe Camel taste after you killed him?

Had a drug and alcohol problem (either before during or after this clip)

Nah, the vast majority of the people who went to these shows are now passed on: the average age of a day-time talk show attendee in 1993 was in their 60s. Even if you were the typical middle-aged parent in your 40s or 50s at this time in 1993... you would now be in your 70s and 80s (if you are still alive). No. The people online making those comments these days are their grandchildren (and children), who are now middle-aged and should know better having grown up around that. I being one of those grandchildren whose is now 40, am shocked that those kids who are now parents my age are repeating that cycle. My grandparents used to love to go to these taping's and now both are passed on. As a kid and teenager I always was against their opinion on these things because it was backwards and illogical. But that is how the Silent and Greatest Generations were raised - and even the boomers (my parents) had their own lesser issues with the younger Gen X crowd. Just a lot of stubborn narrow mindedness, and _"I am always right, so don't down even start with me'_ mentalities.

@raven4442 I agree with Gerard's position and I don't believe in censorship, but I don't think there's a fantastic argument for the idea that a comic book will be taken as "information" by anyone. People read comics for entertainment. I actually think exposure to the idea of a serial killer at all, and more serial killer presence in any form of media is mostly a bad thing. The more they're talked about, the more copycat killers are inspired. The best antidote for copycat killers is for them to be completely absent in media. Obviously news has to be reported on, but I don't think trying to inform people through a comic book is a good strategy. All that being said, I don't support book bans and do not side with this vile censorious woman from 3 decades ago.

Like I said to someone else: Dude wasn't 'chubby'. In 1993 standards, he was enormous. That certainly did not help the poor guy. I'm the same age as him, and back then I was 132lbs. If a 16 year old was 200lb+ without muscle he was considered a "lard @ss" (a term we used alot back then). The obesity epidemic that hit hard years later really changed things in our perception of weight standards here in the US. But in 1992 and 1993, we were just getting out of the 1980s when almost everyone was thin. Just look at the rockstars and celebrities of that time - rail thin (anorexic). No wonder he was bullied so (kids his size where not the norm), and that really sucks that he had to go thru that.

That's not 'based'.... that was 'normal' for every young person back then. You didn't have to be 'Based' back then, because as bad as our parents and grandparents were - society STILL wasn't as oppressive of biological and hard facts as today. It was just saying "common sense" to narrow-mined people without it. "Based" exists as a word these days, because it's the counter culture. Back then, it was just culture. No one was confused about pronouns, their race, gender differences or how money worked. Companies knew that to sell a product you had to give people what they wanted (not a agenda), and our politicians were not pandering to any demographic other than their own constituents in their state. It was a TOTALLY different world in terms of 'social justice' and that sort of thing. The worse thing we had to worry about in that regard, was the OPPOSITE side of the political spectrum (things might have been TOO conservative): _The Satanic Panic_ and _Videogames V*olence Campaign._

I was 13 in 1993 and it was such a pain in the ass living surrounded by people like these. Sad thing is that its still exists, a great example of that is the book bannings and the way people blew out of proportion Gojira's performance in the Olympics (IMHO it was the best part!) but its changed for the better. As a side note, Gerard looked like what in my book was a "cool kid". I was in the freaks and geeks group too and I hung out with people like him back then.Its so cool seeing him stand up to people like these at such a young age.

It's differant when its like on billboards and advertisements and stuff you can't avoid but if you go out of the way to go to a store, dig through the media until you find something you think goes against your morals... Then don't buy it. Leave it. If you find it horrible, pay it no mind.

As a kid I avoided these kinds of shows except as a passing curiosity. However, seeing this kind of face-to-face discourse by a group with varied and opposing opinions *broadcast on daytime television nationwide* feels so much healthier than the from behind a screen bickering we do today. Society needs these kinds of shows to come back so we can see real regular people hash these societal disagreements out - especially with today's culture wars. It's interesting to see people getting heated yet staying civil. Face-to-face discussions with a genuine and good mediator will always have that advantage over other mediums. Plus - the fact that regular people and not a panel of so-called highly educated experts keeps it down to earth. Just my humble opinion.

This is so interesting. If I was in the audience, I wish I could have pointed out to her that if she had read the Bible, she must understand how Satan is not portrayed in a positive light, which is the crux of where her entire argument originates. Therefore, most of her outrage lies with comic books and the interests of young people in general, because people fear what they don't understand, especially as they get older. The author does not have any empathy for the older generation and is reveling in pushing boundaries. As has been proven over the past few decades, he was ahead of his time and comic books truly have become established as adult reading. She is right that children shouldn't be exposed to graphic material, and I'm not really sure how much life experience you must have to properly put this subject matter into context, but it sounds like the author agreed with that. Dude literally lost money on the book. Just a lot of outrage over nothing.
