Great video! Just a note on auto ISO: If you turn on Auto ISO, and then set the max allowed ISO to 200, you can then use the ISO dial to change the max allowed ISO. So it doesn't override the "auto", but it does let you change the max ISO at will. I set it this way and haven't touched it since. I just leave it in auto ISO and set the desired max via the dial. I have actually found this to be my favorite implementation of auto ISO vs sony and fuji cameras I also own.
@NTXMarcusS26 күн бұрын
^^^ THIS ^^^ I think that this implementation of Auto ISO along with the dial makes it THE BEST implementation of an ISO dial. It also works similarly when you have the dial set to an ISO number below your maximum by using the dial setting as the minimum. You have much better control over Auto ISO with the simple turn of the dial. To me, while the Fujifilm dials and how they implemented Auto ISO is simple, this is more powerful.
@AdamTuck125 күн бұрын
I had no idea that's how it worked, that's huge! I love the Auto ISO implementation on Fujis, except for when I want to adjust the max on the fly to something that isn't already one of the three presets. Nikon's setup sounds way better!

@photographydiscourse118525 күн бұрын
Yes, this is literally the way to shoot with this camera - have been using it this way since I got the camera many months ago. When you are out and about in the daylight, the Auto ISO generally chooses 100 but obviously cannot go above 200. When you move into darker places, you simply manually move the dial to a higher ISO and it automatically raises the ceiling in the menu to the new value you selected - so you essentially have 'semi'-manual control of the ISO by being able to control the AUTO ISO ceiling on the fly with the dial. Unfortunately, Nikon does not allow for the ceiling to be set at 100 (the lowest is 200) - maybe in a firmware in the future (or the next gen of this camera) they will allow for the Auto ISO ceiling to be set to 100 - essentially making it a manual setting of 100 and then you just increase the ceiling as needed with the dial - which would be the best of all worlds between manual and Auto ISO - that said 200 is very close to being as clean with only a slight drop in DR that this hardly matters and as mentioned above, when the light is bright it selects 100 anyway so this is rarely, if ever, an issue. If you have not shot this camera this way before, you are in for a treat as this literally transforms they way to will use and enjoy this epic camera! -PD

On the other hand Zf has much better auto focus and build quality. Plus full frame is really great in low light. For now I'm keeping both systems. The comparisons between the Zf and XT-x cameras is natural due to their design aesthetics. One thing people have to consider is we're talking full frame vs APS-C bodies so there will naturally be a size difference. As far as weight, I think NIkon wanted the Zf to be a spiritual sibling to the F3 which was a largish and relatviely heavy film camera in its day. It feels solid and very premium in hand-- like a workhorse for pro use. Do the ergonomics work by today's standards? No, but you have to understand and appreciate what Nikon wanted from a camera like this. IMO I believe Fuji wanted to create a modern interpretation of a retro camera, and Nikon wanted to pay homage to its retro film past with modern internals. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally think they got it right. They just need a line of compact lenses to complement the body and aesthetics or we need it from 3rd party options.

The top ISO dial does function for auto ISO. You need to think of it as a maximum limiter. Auto ISO will go up to whatever your ISO dial is set to or lower down to ISO 200. You do need to turn off auto ISO manually for ISO 100. Cool video and great camera!
@csc-photo27 күн бұрын
Second time I’ve heard this, tested both times to make sure I’m not crazy - still does not work as you describe. I have auto-ISO on, ISO dial set to “C”. Pointing camera out the window, then down at dark floor. Ranges from ISO 100 outside, to 25,600 when pointed to floor, as expected. Turned ISO dial from C to 400, nothing else changed. Getting exact same auto-ISO ranges as above. ISO dial has zero effect on anything / at any manually set ISO, unless I put dial back to “C” and manually turn off auto-ISO before turning ISO dial. If there’s a setting I’m missing, please let me know. Otherwise, when in Auto-ISO, the ISO dial is entirely disabled, even as a limiter.

That Sony lens adapter is clever stuff… but it’s still better to get native lenses where possible, especially for wide angle. So many lenses these days rely on the body to calculate lens corrections, and your Zf isn’t going to do that for adapted Sony glass. So you may find that any Sony mount wide angles look distorted/vignetted in camera - and you need to take them to Lightroom to fix.

I was very jazzed when the ZF was announced. But when I actually laid hands on it, was put off by the ergos and controls/button/setting change layout. Stupidity reigns supreme, so later I bought it anyway. But i still didn't take to it so returned it and went back to a Z6ii. I agree with all your 'cons' of the camera. I hope Nikon does an improvement in the future, as I love the 'concept' of the camera. IMHO Nikon needs to improve the ergos and make the way settings are changed more straightforward and Fuji-like. We'll look forward to your updates on your experience with it.

Lovely colors, especially on the video 😍! Regarding your comment about the A-priority and auto iso: Its smarter than you think: Set the auto Iso to 100 (the lowest setting in the menu), and the Dail now acts as an override. Turn your dail to 3200 and thats your new max auto iso.
@martindemanable27 күн бұрын
Regarding the grip, I highly recommend a thumb grip. Make sure to buy one that has a small metal connector between the thumb rest and camera. Otherwise, you might flex your hot shoe.
@gerardneedham27 күн бұрын
Dude, the last guy actually said the opposite 😅. It’s too confusing to keep watch videos on, basically if I turn the dial it doesn’t do anything. Not change the min or max iso value, unless I turn off auto iso
@gerardneedham27 күн бұрын
Yeah the grip I got goes straight into the 1/4 thread in the bottom
@martindemanable27 күн бұрын
@@gerardneedham Haha, sorry to hear that! Here, it works flawlessly: auto ISO is set to max 100 as the upper limit in the menu, and now you can turn the dial to override the max limit as high or low as you prefer > dont set it to C!

700 grams only for the body coupled with a difficult grip might be a bit too much for travel 🤔 The Z6 iii is only 760 grams and has better grip

The ergonomics issue you mention about a female hand not being able to reach the shutter button misses a point: You use a third party grip that has not been designd in partnership with Nikon. The SmallRig grip was sold from launch date on and is even sold via Nikon's own online store. It's certainly not Nikon's fault how 3rd party brands make their grips.

Nice vid bro. I wanna get one now! Btw the "larger pixel = less noise" myth has been debunked, it;s not true. Higher mpx sensors are less noisy when downsampled to i.e. 24mpx than a native 24mp sensor would be. fyi.
@gerardneedham20 күн бұрын
Mmmm, I seen that video but he does say don’t pixel pep so yeah if you print or display side by side you won’t notice right? Check the link below and select say a 20mp R6 and the 45mp R5 and set the iso too 3200 iso and you see for yourself. most cameras also only downsample to JPEG files not Raw files. so the XT5 40mp APSC sensor gets pretty noisey after 1250 while this zf is clean even at 8000 iso, the max I’ll go to in my A7iv 33mp is about 4000 iso, anything past that it starts to fall apart. www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=canon_eosr6&attr13_1=canon_eosr5&attr13_2=apple_iphonex&attr13_3=apple_iphonex&attr15_0=jpeg&attr15_1=jpeg&attr15_2=jpeg&attr15_3=jpeg&attr16_0=3200&attr16_1=3200&attr16_2=32&attr16_3=32&normalization=full&widget=1&x=0.1157531933145888&y=0.07352433778497842

Finally. Now I can subscribe to you again. But I must disagree. After using the Sony a7iii, a7iv and a7cii, I find the autifocus at least as good if not better. With Sony it catches eyes too often when my square is not over and I wanted to focus for example on the hands when people looked down. So I had to put eye focus on an extra button and turn it off with normal focusing. Which works way better with 3d focus on Nikon. Everything was better with the nikon Zf vs my Sony a7cii except of lens choice which is why I just can't switch.
@gerardneedham27 күн бұрын
Arrrr the Nikons 3d tracking is definitely not as good as Sony, I also have a custom button to turn off eye af, but I only use the 3d tracking or wide af with eye af on or off. And when you know how to select your subject with Sony, you really never miss
@flol326627 күн бұрын
@ I agree about the Sony thing when selecting a subject, but then I do not want to select a subject like a person or eye or so and really want to lay the focus in the middle of let's say two persons, it is sometimes just impossible as the subject tracking will kick in, even when my spot was not even close to those subjects. I am just faster with 3d tracking. Or maybe I am doing something wrong. Could you make a video on how you use this on Sony (and maybe compare to Nikon)?
@pcphotography910827 күн бұрын
For some reason when I tried the Nikon ZF for a month, eye AF with 3D tracking was always off. It would show green box on the eye indicating it is solid and acquired but when playback or reviewing in Lightroom, it would be focused a plane closer like on a shirt collar or something with the eye not sharp. I really wanted to like and switch to the ZF but I like how I can reliably get the shot and focus with Sony and I like that the lenses I have with sony have aperture rings. Not sure why their 40SE Nikon has a “fake” or no aperture ring lol

It's always fascinating to me what some consider deal breakers. Different needs for different people, I get it. Open gate means nothing to me. I can still shoot any video I want without it. And anything above 4k to me is also useless. Actually, the studio I work with wants weddings shot at 1080p. The only time I use 4k is for my own videos, and it's so unnecessary lol
