Scablands Scavenger

2 жыл бұрын

This is a video showing the new Gerber Bushcraft Axe and Hatchet. I will cover basic specs, pricing and discuss comparable options from Fiskars.
I am hoping to take them on my next trip and field test them.
I have had some people question statements I make when reviewing products (not sharp, loose parts, bad quality) so this video will show how and what you can expect "out of the box" before I make any modifications or use them.

Looking forward to see you test those new axes. The head seems to be a little wider than the wrap. Which should prevent wood from damaging the wrap. This used to be a problem with some of the older Fiskars models. Not anymore, they made the cheeks a little wider near the wrap. Fiskars are a good solid product. Let's see how the Gerber Bushcraft axe/hatchet will hold up.

I agree, Fiskars makes a good axe at a good price. I am curious how these will compare, first impressions.... they feel well made but a bit awkward and unwieldy compared to the Fiskars.
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius 2 жыл бұрын
@@Scablands_Scavenger Yes, this awkward and unwieldy feeling is not a good sign. But maybe in use they will be a bit surprising? I'm curious for sure. Fiskars are tough cookies. Did you the destruction video of Joe X? The handle was nearly unbreakable. Totally crazy tough.

Hi, As mentioned in a previous comment, 1 of my daughters uses a Gerber pack hatchet. I would like to know your thoughts on this tool. Now, keep the following in the back of your mind; it is carried while hiking as a replacement for a large knife. It is used for small shelter building or firewood prepping, not for large building woodchopping tasks. While firewood prepping it is used more in a batoning manner than a chopping manner. In camp other tools that we have are used. Do you think this is a viable option in combination with a good pocket knife or multitool for smaller tasks / food prepping? I would love to see you test it and hear your opinion on it. Mind you, she wont change her mind on it, she likes it. It is just to satisfy my curiosity 😁. Thank you for the good content you put out. Kind regards Alain

It seems weird that Gerber already markets a more expensive version of the Fiskars axes and now this? The shape of the handle seems to be to increase the chopping power, the same reason khukuri chop so well. Is it worth it on an axe haft? It seems like a solution to a non existent problem but perhaps, because of the forward cant, it may actually make the tool more dangerous as it curves towards you and less intuitive to use.

It is going to be a hard sell I think. There are so many other proven options/designs available. I dont know that the handle insert will be enough to justify the price. People may buy it just for the looks.

What would you recomend? The x10 or x11. For chopping down medium trees but primaly splitting wood.

Please let me know when you test the Bushcraft Axe. I’m taking my sons on a camping trip this August and trying to decide on whether to purchase the Buschraft Axe or Gerber FreescapenAxe. Website says the Bushcraft Axe has a 6” blade and the Freescape axe has a 3” blade?

I guess it will come down to the design of the head, and if the shape of the handle causes pain in the hands and wrist from prolonged use. Maybe for safety reasons they didn’t ship it with a sharp edge. I don’t know about most people, but I don’t want to buy a dull axe or knife. Looking forward to seeing them in use. 🇺🇸👏👏👏👏🪓🪓

Yes, agreed... kind of expensive for being very dull considering how sharp the Fiskars normally come. I am curious to see how people like these, the heavy for size head and awkward angle may not go over well.

Great comparisons! Thank You. I have an Fiskars X7. Would a Gerber Sheath fit on the x7? What would you recommend for a sheath on the x7
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger Жыл бұрын
Glad the video was useful! The Gerber sheath sort of fits on the X7 but not in a secure way. My recommendation for an X7 sheath would be a kydex sheath. There are several options available, several people make them. There are also some really nice leather sheaths available too. All the kydex in my videos was made by me, I make one for the X7 with a sliding lock that has sold quite well. I have a video on it posted here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYeqfmilf6iDhZY

It does seem some of these companies make very poor design decisions. This is made worse by "influencers" giving glowing reviews on bad designs because they got the product for free/paid.

Went to check out Gerber's job openings on their site. To my surprise, Gerber is owned by Fiskars. You mentioned not knowing why Gerber is more expensive than Fiskars, they appeal to people who like tactical gear. Tactical loving folk will spend more for their gear.

If the handle breaks. You contact Fiskers or Gerber. Tell them it broke. You ship it back to them, they send you a new hatchet/axe.

@@brianmccann666 I've got another one. What if those companies go out of business? What if you were in a survival situation and your axe handle breaks. You'd be screwed. You can't refit a new handle. There's a reason axes have been the way they are and remained unchanged for hundreds of years since before the Vikings.

@@ModernDayMinuteman ... My Advice. Buy Extra Handles & wedges, etc.. Or Buy Tomahawk Style hatchets & Axes. Buy spare Handles online for them. Or Buy Full Tang Axes & Hatchets made of all Metal, heads, Handles... Look at Estwing tools, axes, hatchets. They are some of the Best tools around. Your climate, weather, will make the most sense which you buy. • Synthetic Handles suffers in extreme cold. Freeze breaks. Also UV tends to cause them to dry rot I found out. • Full Tang handles aren't the best in ocean, tropical, Humid climates. Tend to rust. • Wood. Requires Care. Overstrikes are their biggest weakness. Can Dry Out. Can Dry Rot. Mineral oil helps prevent both. But the handles can be replaced unlike the others.

If they are the green handled "Gerber" branded with "Made in Finland by Fiskars" they are the exact same as the Fiskars X series other than the handle colors and pricing. If they are made in China, Thailand or other country they are different.

Some are used more than others, have about 75-100 or so because I used to make and sell sheaths for them. Some for work, some for fitting sheaths to. The X7 is one of my favorites, I think I have all 5 versions ha ha, also really like the X11 great little splitter that fits under truck seat. Take care!
