I used to have two Male gerbils and one died a few months ago leaving my other gerbil lonely. I read up online that it is best to bond adult gerbils with very young baby gerbils so I have bonded him with 3 more gerbils who were 5 weeks old when I got them. They all settled in very well and didn’t need a split cage because gerbils at 5 weeks are very easy to bond with gerbils of all ages. All four gerbils now are very happy and get along so well. I’m glad my older gerbil gets on with them because he is 3 and quite old for a gerbil so it is nice for him to have younger ones to keep him healthy and entertained. They also look up to him and try to copy what he does. I love your videos btw, they really inspire me to see how motivated you are to your pets.

I've been considering introducing new gerbils to my poor solo gerbil for a while. Her sister died when they were both young due to a stomach infection and she's been alone for about half a year. You finally gave me the courage to try introducing some new friends. I'll do my best to make sure they're the best of friends.

@@nadiatenorio8324 do to a gerbil shortage in the area I had to buy a pair together. I knew it would be hard for 3 females to get along, but Fang was obviously pretty depressed so I gave it a try. It worked for about 3/4 of a year before they declanned. I'd say it was worth it for old lady Fang to have a family again, even if it was for a short while. She ended up with a gash in her cheek, but she's ok now and far happier than before the whole ordeal. Though I did have to buy another cage and all the fixin's. (Warning, if your gerbils are fighting to the death, still take the time to put gloves on. I walked away with way worse wounds than either of my little fluff nuggets.)

I successfully bonded my female gerbils in the summer 2017 using your advice from your older video. I also used my IKEA Detolf as a cage which I separated. I added 2 other steps. I would lightly put pure vanilla extract on my hands and shuffled the bedding with my hands so the smell would go lightly on the bedding then held the gerbils one at a time so they could familiarize with the smell. I would also switch them sides for a couple of hours. After a week I would take out the divider and supervised them as per your advice. Once four days had past I did a longer time and found them grooming and snuggling together. Thank you for your excellent information. 👍🏻

Hi, i know this is very late, but i am thinking about getting gerbils (only had hamsters before) and i also wanted to buy the detolf as a cage, but i was afraid, bc first maybe there would be a lack of air in the cage (bc of the closed glass) and secound that the cage wouldn't be high enough. Bc if i put like 30cm of this woodenlike thing Inside (sry i dont know the english word) the could easily jump out, so did you build a Top or anything? Sry it s so long🙈😅

One of our male gerbils died a few days back, his friend has been clearly upset. He won’t interact at all, he’s not even bothered about chewing toilet paper rolls and just leaves them. On Wednesday I’m going to attempt to introduce him to a female, via the split cage. It’s the first time I have introduced gerbils so wish me luck. I used to breed them but I originally bought 3 males/3 females that were cage mates so I had no issues back then.

My gerbils were like two peas in a pod, and couldn’t be separated until about midway through their lives, Squeak started being more dominant towards Bubbles. Bubbles was very submissive due to suffering from epileptic fits at a young age. Since then, he had always been slower, and weaker than Squeak. Squeak was chasing Bubbles, and I occasionally heard bubbles making squeaking noises as well as a lot of running around in the cage. I was very worried for them, but they slowly grew out of it as they matured. They never drew blood, and I was very lucky and very grateful! Bubbles passed away around 8 months ago due to natural causes, and squeak seems to be getting along fine. He doesn’t seem to be suffering without his brother, but I’d like to find him a new friend soon. What I’m trying to say is that gerbils do fight occasionally! This shouldn’t put anyone off taking care of them, they’re lovely pets and you shouldn’t have any issues :)

I have had one male gerbil since October. They did not have a second one in stock so I did not get a second. Now being January I bought a second male gerbil. They are in a split cage and genuinely enjoy one anothers presence. Frequently they sniff each other through the screen. Considering how well things have been going I tried removing the partition today. They sniffed one another a lot, but then started rolling around fighting. It was not quite as bad as the example you showed in this video but it was close. The strange thing is, once I put the partition back they both are now acting completely normal again, even sniffing each other through the screen again. For now, the plan is to give it another week.

My gerbils started fighting a month ago. I split them up into 2 separate groups. What is the best way to put the 2 groups together.
@kaid81134 жыл бұрын
Best way I brought my group back together was introducing in pairs slowly then introducing them all in a neutral area, ill explain a bit more. I split the cage and kept one group on one side, and one on the other. After about a week, I picked the two from opposite sides who I've seen meeting more than they others and have them meet in a neutral territory. Repeat until all gerbils have met. If you have a problem with certain gerbils together this will tell you. I also do the same before putting them in the tank all together. Two in at a time then swap. Once the whole group seems fine, you can put them together. If one or two from a certain side don't get along you can put the group on one side and the other one or two that didn't get along on the other, then repeat! It all depends on personalities of the gerbils so you want to make sure they are all compatible!

Yesterday I had to separate my boys😞 I had 5 together for about 6 months until one passed away, the other 4 continued on good for another 5 months thus far. Yesterday I noticed that Chip kept chasing Mickey and Mickey was doing that thumping thing they do when they’re scared. I didn’t wanna risk anything, so I moved all four of them out of the 75 gallon and into 2 40 gallon breeders. Chip and Dale seem to get along, Mickey and Theodore seem to get along. I guess I’ll leave it at the pairs for now☹️ Hopefully I’ll be able to bond them with babies in the future when any of them pass away but this is so disappointing to have happen, never thought the day would come because they’ve been great all together for 11 months since I got them all. I don’t think I’m gonna try and keep a bigger group again, I’ll stick to twos and threes😓

Honestly some gerbils are weird like this, I had two female litter mates that tried to kill each other so I found two more single girls and did a split cage with both pairings. Currently one pair is together and one is still in a split. Just saying that mine who are sisters hated each other but one of them has already successfully bonded with a stranger. Some personalities work and some don’t, if you have the ability of trying them each with new ones I would highly recommend it!

Do you think I can bond 4 younger gerbils with my two gerbils I already have?
@christinakenward82085 жыл бұрын
Generally same numbered pairings are the easiest. If you have two older ones, I would suggest trying to bond them with two younger ones, maybe three at most. If the numbers get too uneven there is more of a chance of it not working out. Four younger ones are already established in a group so it might be harder. As long as you do proper introductions and are prepared for the potential of it not working out, give it a try. I’ve bonded 1/1, 1/2, 2/3 gerbils together before. If the 4 are babies I would be more concerned about the older ones being aggressive though if they’re used to being just with themselves

My female gerbil lost her cage mate and we only had them like 2 months so I went and bought another younger female and I am trying to introduce them. I do not have any way to do a split cage so I have been keeping them separate and having them spend time together in a small pet playpen as well as each other's cages. Things seem to go well except for when they are in the older gerbils cage. We get alot of the older one smelling the little ones butt which turns into some kicking I separate and try again later. Any suggestions? I mean in the small cage they have snuggled together and all.

Hayden Ainslie- I first had 2 gerbils one died son I got “him” a friend until one day I woke up ready to go to sleep away camp for a month I opened the cage only to find 4 more gerbils, apparently the firs gerbils I had was a girl. After sleep away camp I came back to my 4 new baby gerbils( they were the cutest things on the planet, and they weren’t good at walking at first so they kept on running into walls) after a few months I went to the pet store to check the gender of the gerbils because It was sadly time to separate them before I got another litter. We had 3 boys and 3 girls......until one day I saw one “daughter” doing something with her mom (it was a boy😉) I quickly separated him from the other girls and started working on another split cage. It wasn’t working at first. He even got to the other side of the cage and was barely alive when I found him. He survived through it and now lives with 3 other boy gerbils and I was able to give my friend the girls after his gerbils passed away. I most likely just spent 10 minutes of my life writing this even though there is probably only one person willing to spend the time and read this

@@toontales2479 similar story with me: i will give you the short story. I started with two gerbils, they were happy until one of them died of an unexpected illness. So we introduced 2 more to the lonley one. They fighted so we put them in to two different tanks next to each other. We swapped them around after 24 hours and they were fine. A few months laters a gerbil in the store had been seperated with the other two because two of them killed one and hurt the one who survived. I went and rescued "him" and we put "him" with the other boys. No fighting happened, they all got excited and started.... trying to be a parent. I noticed this and suddenly realised said gerbil was a female.... we thought she was pregnant so we put her in a smaller tank with everything needed. After a month, nothing happened so we put her in a bigger tank but she was alone so we got her two friends they got along fine. 7 months later, the old boy died. I was sad but didn't get any more gerbils. 7 more months later, one of the boys died... so we got two more young boys (they are so friendly) and the old gerbil was terrifed and exhausted. They fighted and fighted but eventually they slept. I decided the old gerbil wasn't happy so I put him in the small tank and he died 2 days after. And 2 months ago one of the girls passed away. And here we are 2020 with 4 gerbils

I had two gerbils, and I made a HUGE mistake of putting the hidey house in the middle of the cage. Cocoa and Izzy both claimed different sides of the cage and the water and food we're both on opposite sides. So they fought. Izzy was bleeding really bad and cocoa even bit izzys tail off. But for some reason Izzy lived longer.

im getting 5 male gerbils but they are already bonded as they live in same tank so should i be worried about them suddenly attacking each other?
@christinakenward82085 жыл бұрын
For the most part probably not. About a year ago I got a pair and a trio of boys that I bonded together. They lived happily as a group of 5 with very minor scuffles here and there for six months. One of them passed away in April, and my remaining four boys have continued on great since Alvin’s passing. I have them in a 75 gallon tank and I’m planning on getting another trio of babies to bond with my boys whenever another one of them passes away. Generally males do great in groups and if they do end up fighting, you’ll be able to see signs before it’s too late. As long as there is enough space and you keep an eye on them when you first get them, everything should be good! I also have some females and they’re for sure better in pairs. Males usually aren’t aggressive but if you notice that one is, remove him from the group. Sadly sometimes gerbils don’t get along with others (I also have a single male that tries to kill everyone I’ve tried to bond him with, like Erin’s gerbil Sutty) you’re defiantly better off with a group of boys over girls though!

Ok, so I've had my gerbils for about a year now and I went to the same pet shop and I seen a gerbil guide book and it gave me advice on handling them, i tried what it said even though it said to do it for 2 weeks but I'm just wondering how do you pick yours up without them kind of freaking out
@annabelleosullivan69736 жыл бұрын
Bulbous bulbasaur have you tried scooping them up with two hands because I find this doesn’t scare them as much. I also wait for mine to come over to me so I’m not chasing them around the tank.

3 weeks ago , my gerbils started fighting so we seperated them , we kept the cages next to eachother , but with a box lid inbetween them , so they couldnt see them . We have niw removed that and thet seem quite happy and calm , so we are going to try and put them back together , what do you reccomend doing x

Definitely get some wire, I use the hamster play pen from petco with some flexible wire, the play pen is like 20 and the wire is like 2 bucks at Walmart. Make a split cage , give them each 4 inches of bedding on each side with everything pretty much the same, a hut, wheel, maybe a tube. Make it kinda boring so they want to meet a bit more. Wait a week then switch sides of the gerbils, then wait another week, if they are nesting next to eachother and doing well, put them in a neutral territory and see how they do, if they fight try it again for two weeks and try again if you'd like. But if all goes well you can sift the cage and make sure both smells are everywhere, then put them in together. Make sure they each still have one of everything for a while until things have settled down! I have had about 20 gerbils, currently have 9. I have had 8 together at once, all bought at different times but two of them! I've reintroduced before, but only had one failure, but that gerbil is extremely agressive and fights any gerbil once in a home territory, he's in a split so he doesn't get lonely but he's a mean one. Hahah best of luck to you.

There’s two adult male guinea pigs at my local shelter about 1 year old and I want them to bond with my two also male 3 year guinea pigs, do you think there could be a possibility they could bond?

Hello ! We have just gotten two baby gerbils for my daughter . Is it normal for them to nibble you a lot? We have started to just lay our hands in with them with treats following your other videos but they seem more interested in nibbling us x
@silvermoon29994 жыл бұрын
When a gerbil nibbles people it usually is telling you that it likes you or that you might have food on your hands and it thinks that it's a treat but if it's doing it and aggressive way you might be scaring it. hope I could help

What if you put 2 baby gerbils in the same cage is that fine
@silvermoon29994 жыл бұрын
As long as the baby gerbils are the same sex and they have been introduced or they are litter mates it should be fine

I've bought some hamster food because I couldn't find one for gerbils, and everything in it is fine. But later I saw that there is shrimp in it, so I wonder if you might know if gerbils can eat it? For now I'll just remove it.
