Ashley Swinnerton, collection specialist in the Department of Film, meets us in the theater for a screening of Robert Wiene’s expressionist masterpiece "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920), a film so wildly inventive that certain shots are, as she puts it, “burned into my retinas forever.”

German Expressionism is one of my favorite schools of art. The films that came out of it, such as 'Dr. Caligari', 'Nosferatu', 'Faust' - they're total masterpieces. They say so much, without a word spoken, through the odd angles, lighting, and acting. Thank you for posting this! :)

The image clarity is excellent. Were these cleaned up, or this sharp?

I was very young the first time I saw the film, either 10 or 11 and it was an incredible experience. I hadn't seen anything like it. It's one of my favorites.

Honestly, this is like Tim Burton before Tim Burton. I wouldn't be surprised at all if films like this are where he took his inspiration from.

So many similarities between this film and the set design in Lou Bunin's Alice In Wonderland. Absolutely wonderful!

Wonder if Henry Brandon, Barnaby in the 1934 March of the Wooden Soldiers film, had seen this. Some of his facial expressions (eyes especially) and hand gestures remind me of Krauss’s in this.

There are those who propose that American Film Noir is the child of German Impressionism. I can see that.

I'm afraid that a lot of social upheavals await us in addition to epidemics. I will not undertake to be "somnambulist Cesare", but the logic of world events inclines us to such conclusions.

Ok, but I want to see a movie called “The Cabinet of Dr. Calamari”, a horror film set in a haunted Olive Garden restaurant.

I am pretty sure Rob Zombie’s Living Dead Girl was inspired by this film. Thank you. 🙃
