The family of a fallen German firefighter is welcomed into Fort Wayne. The family is fulfilling his dream to come to the U.S. and see the American fire service.

Das stimmt nicht mal annähernd, die einzigen, die grenzenlos verehrt werden, sind Polizisten, Militär und Feuerwehr, egal was sie verbrochen haben. Sonstige wichtige Berufsgruppen, wie medizinisches Personal und besonders Lehrer werden vergessen

@@tsfbaf303 ja gut das weiß ich nicht aber glaube ich dir. Dennoch wird dann diesen Berufsgruppen wenigstens mehr Anerkennung geschenkt als in Deutschland. Weil Lehrer und Pflegekräfte genau so untergehen wie Polizei Feuerwehr oder die Bundeswehr in Deutschland

This is really a lovely gesture and my hat is off to all those in Ft Wayne that made this happen. Despite me not being a religious person by any stretch, one of the mottos of German firefighters has a lovely ring to it: "Gott zur Ehr, dem Nächsten zur Wehr" - which roughly translates to "For the Honor of God, and for protecting of our neighbor" Just so everyone does not get the wrong picture here: in Germany, there is also a huge overall amount of respect for firefighters. It has been voted to be one of the most trustworthy professions. However, there definitely are issues. Those must not be swept under the rug. There is a very loud and egotistical minority that causes problems. Firefighters and paramedics are sometimes even assaulted for blocking off traffic or for holding off gawkers (another issue all on its own). Some people apparently cannot be bothered to make room for a fire truck because *they* have places to be. There have even been situations where rescuers had to retreat so police can clear their way first to the FD can do its job. In short, there are some extremely disrespectful people that make some of those who risk their lives to protect others question their career choice at times. I think the situation has some overlap with what happens stateside: It is always a small, but very vocal group of dickheads and morons that causes problems for everyone. This includes policy makers who see fit to effectively slash budgets and cut staff for FDs. And while money might not be the primary reason to become a firefighter, I think they are woefully underpaid.

German American Brootherhood is strong af! It’s always a weird yet somewhat cool feeling when I come to the states to visit my host family and they always start to talk about me in being in the military in Germany when I order something to get the military discount. (Things like military discounts are really rare in Germany and you feel so ashamed to ask for something like that since we’re all just normal citizens after all.) Hopefully I’ll be able to move to the States once I retire from the military. ❤️🇩🇪🇺🇸
