EnjoyFirefighting - International Emergency Response Videos

7 жыл бұрын

After I made two videos concerning American / German ambulances and police cars, there were many requests that I should make also a video "American VS German fire trucks" ... the problem which I also mentioned in the answers: while I was lucky to have ambulances from several areas in the USA and also had videos from numerous different law enforcement authorities, all I have concerning American fire trucks are apparatus from the FDNY. The FDNY for sure is very iconic, it can't really stand up for the variety of fire trucks across the USA. That's why I didn't name the video "American fire trucks ...", so please don't hate the video, I'm aware of that there many other, great looking and awesome apparatus and colour schemes in the USA.
Concerning the American part you see some FDNY apparatus I was able to film during a 10 days long stay in New York City.
There are several Engines, various kind of Aerials, Battalion and Division Chiefs, Heavy Rescue Trucks, an Ambulance and some more apparatus.
Living in Germany, it's no surprise that I have a greater variety of fire apparatus from Germany. I thought about comparing the trucks from the FDNY to ones from just one German FD as well, but this wasn't really an option: the only places I have plenty videos of, are cities with the number of inhabitants raning in the few 100k range, while I only have very few videos from the cities with more than a million inhabitants. So I decided to mix fire trucks from all over Germany, from large cities to small villages, from the north to the south across the county, in service at career and volunteer fire departments and even some rental trucks from fire apparatus manufacturers.
Concerning the types of apparatus: you can see chief cars and command vans, small fire-fighting units like the Portable Pump Vans, the rather compact City-Engines to full-size Engines, Rescue Engines, Rescue Tankers, Urban Tankers and Tankers, Mini Rescue Vans, Heavy Rescue Trucks, Truck Cranes, Tower Ladders and Telescopic Platforms, Pod Carriers, Hose Truck, Logistics Truck, Ambulances and a Large Capacity Ambulance, various vans and also special operation units like a SCBA unit or a Decontamination Truck. There are also two former Tankers from German airports in the video. After their service at the airport FD they were sold to other departments or manufacturers.
Some differences between American fire apparatus and German ones: the tactics and organizations in both countries differ alot
1. While american fire departments have rather many small stations scattered in the area, usually with 1 to 4 apparatus, there are rather less but thatfor enormous stations in Germany, with easily more than 40 bays at the largest stations.
2. this results also in Germany rather going for a convoy system instead of numerous apparatus responding on their own
3. American Engines are designed more for jsut the fire-fighting part, while German ones are layed out multifunctional and perform also full-scale rescue operations and other technical tasks.
4. Concerning Aerials, the truck chassis in the USA is alot larger than in Germany. American ones tend to have a crew cab, water tank, pump, ground ladders and often also rescue tools on board, while German ones usually have just a short cab, no tank, no pump, no ground ladders and no heavy rescue tools but just some iminor amounts of equipment on board. The narrow streets in ancient city centers require as compact as possible trucks. Since they usually respond in a convoy (see No. 2) all non-existing equipment on Aerials, is brought to the scene by the Engines and Rescue Engines:_ they have further crews, rescue tools, ground ladders and also secure the water supply.
Most German Aerials are 105' Tower Ladders, there are just few smaller ones like 75', and the largest one which rolled down the streets was 367' high. There are hardly any Midmounts and hardly any Aerials without a bucket in Germany
5. Emergency lights: You primarily see white and red emergency lights in the USA, sometimes mixed also with amber, green or blue lights; In Germany all emergency lights have to be blue
6. Sirens: in the USA you hear some sort of wail or yelp siren most of the time, including special ones like e.g. the Federal Signal Q; Sometimes you also hear hi-lo sirens, and in few cases also the real German set of martin horn sirens. In Germany, wail and yelp sirens fail to meet the acustic and thus legal requirements, thus being hi-lo the only legal choice. however some fire departments made field tests with wail sirens and some old GDR apparatus still have the old wail sirens from the old days.
7. American apparatus are often built on a custom chassis, while most German apparatus are built on a commercial truck chassis
8. Although there's an enormous difference concerning the area the countries cover and their population, both the USA and Germany have the same number of fire-fighters: 1.1 million

In Celle City was the Royal Air Force of U.K. troop station in the history - the Emercency Command Car use often both siren - fast free way on street for so a small car! At the NATO troop place in the Lüneburger Heide do you hear the wail in the 70's and 80's too.

Altair1193 Hmmm ... in Germany all it is a EN norm - so I am sure do you found in the net how many dB(A) our Martin Horn should have in 10, 50 or 100 meter. I wonder me if Denmark not use same - they are in the same EU with same regularies. Edit: StVO §55 Abs.2: […] „Die Lautstärke darf in 7 m Entfernung […] und in einem Höhenbereich von 500 mm bis 1 500 mm über der Fahrbahn an keiner Stelle 105 dB(A) übersteigen.“ […] Litterally: The sound should have in 7 m [...] and at a high of 500 mm till 1 500 mm over the street at no place more as 105 dB(A). Maximum 120 dB(A) at 1 m far from the signal horn. I found this over google in a german blog over the siren and light of german EMS. HTH.

It's not that German trucks are inferior to American trucks or American trucks are inferior to German trucks. They're each made for their own environment. There's lots of tight roads overseas in which American trucks simply couldn't fit in. However there's taller buildings in specifically New York City so it would make sense the FDNY needs bigger trucks. Either way I have nothing but respect for both German fire departments and the FDNY/American fire departments. Me personally I'm a bit more biased towards the FDNY because that's what I want to join.

@@chaosXP3RT efficient is definitely true. We have a lot of different vehicles for different purposes. 2 scenarios for example 1: House fire: There will be like a lot of LFs which are specialized for fires and 1 or maybe 2 ladder trucks because you dont need that much tools in this scenario. 2. Car crash or Truck crash: There will be 1-2 HLFs and definitely 1 or 2 RWs an HLF is an LF but with a so called "Rüstsatz" which can be translated to basic technical rescue set which includes materials to get people cut out of a broken car and we have the RWs which are basically a giant tool box with everything you want. The only thing a RW has not is water, no water storage in vehicle nor a built in pump, they normally have extinguishers though. And everything we need extra is near around. Everyone is specialized in a certain way, because you dont need all the stuff at the same time all the time As an example. We are in my City a big Feuerwehr with a few departments in every part and for our 16 Square miles of normal Response area we have only one ladder and if a neighboring department needs a ladder we go there too.

It's because sirens are really loud. No reason blaring one, if there is no traffic in the way. Ambulances here in Germany do the same thing. If there are no cars blocking the ambulance's path, no siren. The siren is only used when there are cars that need to move out of the way. I hate that back home in Bulgaria, ambulance drivers blare the siren the moment they leave the hospital (I live very close to a hospital) and I see the idiots every day, blasting their sirens as they go up and down my empty street with no traffic. What's that siren for? You want me to move my house out of the way, or what?!
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 5 жыл бұрын
În Germany we switch the sirens off on our own risk. If we are involved in a traffic accident while we had the siren off, then we are completly responsible for it and drivers aren't forced to move out of the way or stop. In some countrieslike e.g. the Netherlands emergency vehicles have to have their siren on, no matter how few vehicles are there in front of the emergency vehicle

USA: All trucks look like made in the 50ies, but they all have a christmas tree on the roof - blue, red, white, orange lights, but does not even make them faster. Robert I guess your answer isn't related that much to the previous comment, but anyway: Well, in the US you have more but smaller stations, while we have less but larger stations. Both come with pros and cons. In my home town (200k inhabitants and 31 sq mi large) only 1 station from the career FD covered the entire city first due. Being able to respond code 3 with an average speed of 40 mph in city traffic they are still able to cover sth like 95% of the city area within a 6 minutes drive
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 жыл бұрын
"cause we habe been doing it longer." what exactly have you been doing longer? Rosenbauer apparatus? Well, 6 minutesis still far below the legal requirements, and keep in mind: within 6 minutes they cover 95%,which emans that they have reached the far outskirts of the city or rather the city limits. Most parts are reached within a 2 to 4 minutes long drive, while the calculated time is set at 8 minutes (+ 1.5 minutes for the emergency call + 3.5 minutes before someone calls the emergency phone number e.g. in case of a fire). And within these 6 minutes, there's not only one apparatus arriving on scene but a convoy of numerous apparatus arriving at the same time,like in my home town 5 apparatus for a basic, unconfirmed fire alarm. There's no time wasted while waiting for units form other stations to arrive True, here we have lesslights (ranging from only 1 on unmarked cars to usually 6 on full-size fire trucks) and still we are usuallymoving faster through traffic.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 жыл бұрын
well, we don't really have more calls based on our response tactics. Again referring to my home town, they have an average of only 5 to 6 calls per 24h shift. The station has more than 50 units and, because the old station was in a bad shape and too small, is currently upgraded from 47 to 55 bays. The old parts of the station are demolished and are built up again

The first diffirence I saw was not so much on the fire trucks themself but in the behavior of the people nearby. The people on the sidewalk had o be stopped by a guy to make room so they could leave to save people and most cars just didn't care. Here in Germany would that behaviour be completely unthinkable and illegal, we would make room, so the firefighter could do their job.

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 7 жыл бұрын
this cab design exists since 1998 and is widely spread in the communal sector, especially garbage collection and at fire departments. The low entry cab offers several advantages, like getting in or off the cab easier, having a lower overall vehicle height and the bus doors are perfect for tight spots. The driver would usually still get off the truck via the door on this side

I don't mean to offend anyone... I'm here just to discuss technologies. 1. I don't know why American ladder trucks are that huge in terms of overall length, but their ladders are short. Even those gigantic tiller trucks usually have ladders no taller than 150 ft., which is merely 50 m approximately. A ladder of an equivalent reach can be easily fit onto a much shorter European three-axle truck chassis. I've never seen any American ladder trucks having a steerable tag axle, so their turning radius is appalling. They also have huge rear overhang which swings out way too much. Maneuvering on busy urban streets is not a pleasant job. 2. Also, the idea of having a manually steerable trailer doesn't sound like a good idea at all. Technology for an automatic hydraulic counter-steer trailer axle is mature. Having a firefighter do that job is not only challenging, but also dangerous. There're plenty of accidents involving tiller trucks, and excessive speed is often the cause. At least there should be some positive speed control feature, just like on a pusher-type articulated bus. 3. It appears to me that all-wheel-drive engines are a standard for most stations in Germany, but they are extremely rare in the US. Only bush fire units are AWD, and they are only seen in stations in high wild fire hazards areas. Do Germans need more off-road capabilities? Not sure... Judging from how much pickup trucks there are in the US... 4. I've never seen any American rescue trucks with built-on cranes... which seems to be very common everywhere else. Isn't a crane pretty handy in a variety of scenarios?
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 7 жыл бұрын
Even the enormous Tiller Ladders usually are not 150' ones but 105' ones, even shorter than you'd expect them to be. There are just few, and I mean very few, larger Aerials in the range up to 164' max .... The few European Midmount Ladders had a long verhang as well, but they didn't succeeded in large numbers and aren't common at all Well, in fact there are truck cranes at quite many German fire departments, both career / paid departments as well as at volunteer departments

The aerial ladders of the FDNY are 100 Ft. The Tower (bucket) ladders are generally 75 Ft with some being 95Ft. I don't believe that any FD's in the USA have cranes. That function is usually done by private tow services with large wrecker trucks or construction company cranes can be used.

Actually, I don't mean mobile cranes, I mean built-in cranes, like those on utility trucks. There're lots of rescue trucks in Europe, Asia, etc. with a small crane installed at the very back. Very handy in many scenarios, car wrecks, not-too-bad building collapses, etc.

I have no idea how i got here, but the first clip of german fire trucks is shot in Regensburg at the "Hauptfeuerwache Berufsfeuerwehr Regensburg", about 200m away from where i live, like i can literally see it when i look out the window. What a coincidence. Edit: the shot from 13:20 is also from there, just going the other direction. Same for the shot at 15:20.

For American people wondering, some of these German vehicles are special. We have Oil cleaning fire vehicles, cranes, ambulance buses and command posts, SCBA Providing vehicles called "Atemschutz" and so on... We just have everything extra, whilw the Americans have it all on one truck. Which i think is also pretty nice, but both do a good job here! 👍🏻

I find the designs of the german trucks versus the American ones very fascinating. On some of the german ladder trucks it looks like they use the front of a Mercedes bus for the cab. It is also interesting that they use mobile cranes, and I even seen a bus turned into a fire response vehicle. Understandably though if there are only few fire apparatus I could understand the need for a bus if you are having to travel a long distance and need to bring extra fire crew along. There aren't that many lights on german trucks and most of them don't flash as much as American lights. To sum it all up America and Germany have completely different infrastructures so that means different types of trucks to adapt to that environment.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 7 жыл бұрын
yes, in fact the chassis of the so-called Mercedes-Benz Econic truck is from the Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus. The cab is designed differently though. Yes, in many large cities and some few towns the fire departments operate truck cranes for heavy rescue and lifting operations which go beyond the capabilities of Tower Ladders. Although some departments also operate a large crew bus, the buses you see here in the video are so-called Large Capacity Ambulance (Bus). Most departments use vans as crew carriers

do you mean the one at 12:40? It's a pod carrier (btw one without a crane). In general: these pod carriers are used to transport a range of various special operations equipment pods to the scene. Those cover tasks which are rarely needed. Thus it wouldn't be cost efficient to purchase and maintain e.g. 10 complete special operation trucks, but rather have two of those Pod Carriers for 10 different equipment pods. This specifc one at 12:40 is in service at the Stralsund CFD and only serves for one special equipment pod "maritime firefighting". It covers a greater area than the Stralsund FD does within the city

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it indeed is, especially since some of the special equipment pods cover tasks which are needed only few times a year. Those truck cranes are used for all kinds of heavy rescue / technical support lifting operations which go beyond the capacity limit of the smaller truck mounted cranes or Tower Ladders. Examples are e.g. vehicle rollovers, accidents with trucks being involved, storm damages like fallen trees, damages roofs, collapsed buildings structures, derailed railroad vehicles, sunken boats, ...

I think it would be good for megalopolis (U.S.A.) to begin rethinking equipment design/purchase. Not all, but some of city equipment is so unbelievably large that speed (response time) and maneuverability (through traffic) is just ridiculous. Specialty equipment aside, there is really no call in such massive trucks (in most cases these are bought and maintained on taxpayer $$$, another issue altogether), bigger does not automatically equal better in some instances.
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 6 жыл бұрын
Billy C A good portion of these trucks are specialty trucks. Many of these trucks need the amount of storage space they do because of the lack of space for other engines and specialty vehicles. Easier to combine it into one.
@EnjoyFirefighting

there was only one Heavy Rescue, one Collapse Rescue (which was remarkbly comapct compared to other American trucks here) and think one more specila operations unit ... when I think about that an AMerican 100' Tower Ladder has a comparablelarge chassis like a 170' Tower in Germany ...it's strange
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 6 жыл бұрын
Its my understanding that *generally the US has much larger pumps and water tanks on there engines. Most of the Euro aerials are made most for rescue rather than fire suppression. And many of the US aerials often carry water and can pump themselves. And many have a working platform at the end of the ladder. Now FDNY isn't a good FD to generalize the rest of America's fire departments. They try to cramp as many trucks into one trucks to save bay space. You get out of the big city and you will see smaller trucks.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 жыл бұрын
well, although, talking for Germany, most cases where the Aerials get in action are indeed some kind of rescue call (EMS support transporting a patient down, evacuating people, cutting down treefs etc), it's not like they wouldn't be layed out for the fire-fighting task in first place. Among German Aerials, roughly 99% do have a platformfor easier, safer operation and a wider range of operation

I can tell most of these videos were taken in and around the same area in New York City and wherever that is in Germany respectively. It did look like most of the fire trucks in the New York City video were pretty old, I live in Charlotte, and most of our fire trucks are pretty new with very bright LED lights, I also hardly ever see a fire truck responding without their sirens blaring and horn blasting, cars seem to get out of the way pretty quick when they hear that coming down the road. I live in a more suburban part of town, similar to the area where the German videos were filmed, which makes it a lot easier for drivers to get over, and as much is I criticize the drivers in this city, they are pretty good at moving over for emergency vehicles, even in more built up areas of town, they are pretty good at getting over when they can. With that being said, I don’t think you can draw a fair comparison between the two videos, the American video was taken in one of the most dense urban areas in the world, and even in New York City, there are a lot of cars. Versus in the German video, it looks to be in a more suburban area, with less traffic, whether that has to do with the fact that Europeans drive less than Americans, or whether it’s just not as busy there is irrelevant, there’s more room to get over.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 5 жыл бұрын
that's correct,the videos from NYC areall taken in Midtown and Downtown Manhattan, but the clips from Germany aren't from the same area at all, but the clips arefrom all across the country, from the countryside to the largest cities, from states in the south and north and so on. And some of the German clips are rather from downtown instead of some suburban area. In the suburban areas you'll hardly find fire stations from a professional fire department here with 24-7 staffing etc, so you'll hardly find me filming in suburban areas While I stayed in NYC I saw allkinds of situation, like e.g. times where there wasn't any traffic at all, and in other situations drivers didn't pull over and thus the emergency vehicles took several minutes just to get from one intersection to the next one

I love them all. As a Volunteer in America, I am obviously biased toward our equipment. But I often work and watch videos and think of how both countries could benefit from having a range of both. For example, I have seen some videos in Europe of some very big fires that I think could have been handled if they had some American firepower there. But then I ride to a fire in the city and think, "man we would get there faster if we had some shorter, more agile rigs." At least for first due. A 2nd Alarm strike would trigger the big stuff for exterior attack or big water needs. We could keep our own lights and sirens, since that's what our citizens are accustomed to, but otherwise, direct from the manufacturer with adapters for hydrants (or cisterns for my over the pond bros and sisters), so that water systems would not have to be rebuilt. Not to mention the job and economic benefits of trading fire equipment. But we work with whatever we get right?! Great video and thanks everyone for your support! 🚒
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 3 жыл бұрын
Although some tactics seen overseas will be adapted at some point and even though some very few apparatus will be seen on both sides of the pond, it's not much worth trying apparatus from one side of the pond on the other side as well. American departments wouldn't go for commercial chassis made by e.g. Mercedes-Benz as there are no Mercedes-Benz truck dealers and service partners in the USA; The other way around there are no dealers and service partners for American fire apparatus manufacturers over here in Germany. There are many kinds of apparatus in Germany which have quite an attack power, they are simply adapted to the needs in each area. Thus there are also turbine powered aerosol extinguishers, special extinguishing agents apparatus which carry e.g. frozen carbondioxide or nitrogen vaporizers, and some pumps have a pumping capacity of up to 11,888 gallons per minute and the largest LDH we have has a diameter of 7.5 feet The US Army Fire & Rescue Services at USAG bases over here used to run American apparatus for quite some years, but by now most of them are replaced by European apparatus. Also tradesmen which bought an American apparatus in the USA and shipped it to Europe, offering it to all kinds of departments, failed as no-one wanted to buy it and thus there are some American fire apparatus over here which never ever responded to an emergency call. The Prague FD had a once and never again purchase of a few American Engines and Tower Ladders, not sure if any of them is still in service
