I just started learning German and it's a fascinating language. Some of the alphabet is pronounced the same as in French. Makes it a little easier for me. It's cool that the letter Y almost sounds the same as in Italian. German sounds like a mixture of English and French in my opinion.

I learned Spanish for a year in school (forgot everything), but I remember after learning phonetics, that it was quite easy for me to write Spanish words. Only the rolling R was quite a problem for me and still is. I think if you learn German phonetics, you can write almost 80% of the words correctly.

it's total greek, ypsilon, Y this is ypsilon, in greek ύψηλον, exactly the same, they say the call it like thin in honor of the ancient Greece. In greek means high e because we have 5 different es.

One litte addition: The letter "V" can also be pronounced like in the word "vintage" (Vase (engl. vase) would be a good example for that, although I cannot think of any other german word, where this would apply)

Hello ! 'Banana' has 3 'a' in English and the pronunciation is similar, but in German, the last letter 'e' (Banane) is pronounced as 'a' which makes us the foreigners confused. However, if there's a rule should be cleared here at the same time I think. Thanks !

Is the letter R always sound like French R or is there only special places to use the french R?

In most past of Germany you would use the French R but if you go more south, e.g. in Bavaria and even in Austria and Switzerland where German is also spoken, the people there would use the Spanish R (rolling R).

I’m English, my mum knows some German, she taught me how to count to 20, the alphabet, months of the year and she is teaching me a lot more! All under a day or two. My dad also knows how to speak some German! When I’m fluent I’d just love to speak German at random hehe 😂
