And let me try to explain the last note: the topic is Tim Eulenspiegel, a famous 14th century 'clown', from German sayings. Eulenspiegel translates to 'owl mirror', which is why you see an owl with mirror. On the back we have a scene from some tale. The descriptive sentence states:"how the baptised Eulenspiegel got baptised one more time". So Idk what happened exactly, he ended up in that pont for some reason. So I'm sure that guy outside of it seems to help him. For more details you can look him up, I'm just familiar with his figure, he's known in Germany^^

Hi there! Here are some infos: 2:16 it's St George (the Patron on the coat of arms of Eisenach) 2:47 they are miners too - Freiberg = a wealthy city with silver mines 3:53 the medieval seal of the city of Eutin (without the 25 of course :) 4:25 the Voss-Haus is/was a Hotel, it burned down I think a few years ago. Voss is a surname. 4:59 the cross of St George was the coat of arms of the Electorate of Trier. 5:33 Ehrenbreitstein was a fortress against a possible French invasion (oh yes, there have been some!) even until the Great War. 6:17 I have not the slightest idea who this lady is. Must have to do sth with the local history of Freienwalde 7:18 these are little poems which mostly describe local historical events 8:00 the seal of the Municipality of Frose (in old times there was a monastery in Frose, guy could be the abbot or founder) 8:24 shows an old copper engraving (could be18th century, regarding the type of writing beneath) of the city of Diez. In the middle the Castle of Diez. Diez in Hesse-Nassau is strongly connected to the monarchies of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, the House of Orange-Nassau. 9:15 It's indeed an owl with a mirror, representing in a sort of a rebus a figure named Eulen-spiegel ("Owl-Mirror"). "Till Eulenspiegel" is a very old legendary figure and Kneitlingen claims to be the native city of Till Eulenspiegel. The monkey is kind of an opponent to Eulenspiegel, who could be described as a sort of jester. 9:55 The back depicts one of Eulenspiegels "adventures". The text below reads: "How the baptized Eulenspiegel got his second baptism." Sadly I don't know the story behind it. You should ask an Eulenspiegel expert ... or someone from Kneitlingen. :)) Happy collecting ... and keep on your good work!

I will have to reconsider my dismissal of notes of this type. They really are beautiful.

Another annotation: Most of the small notgeld notes have never been used for payment. They have been merely collecting items ... a kind of early collector cards, you could say. (This does not apply to the so called "Großnotgeld", the higher denominations which was a often used and needed currency.)

I call them Monopoly Money 😅 On a serious note, these are very beautiful made notes. Colorful & plenty of cool drawings.

Hi. Rentenmark was from 1923 to 1948. At that time Reichsmark was in use and was hit by inflation. I just found out about Notgeld myself - as a German in Jakarta .... and started to collect. For me it is much easier to understand the inscription, but on one of them you can find Latin - international language so to speak...

I can tell what's going on on the first note: it's the arrest of Martin Luther (Gefangennahme)😄.

I think you repeated twice word rentenmark. The currency of that time was reichsmark. Rentenmark was introduced in 1923 as a successful attempt to stop hyperinflation. In parallel to reichsmark they used goldenmark which had fixed rate to US dollar and thus to gold of 4.20 goldmark to 1 US$ (it was pre-WWI rate of reichsmark).

I was waiting for someone to point this out. You are partially correct. The Rentenmark replaced the Papiermark. The Reichmark came later. You can tell when I don't read my notes and try to do things from memory. It doesn't always go so well :D
