Many years ago I visited Iceland and went to their national museum. It was really interesting just how much emphasis they put on hating the British for the occupation, I was kind of shocked. What they didn't mention was the way they treated women who fell in love with Allied servicemen stationed in Iceland - many were stripped of their assets and effectively institutionalised as shameful rape victims. A deeply insular country paranoid of foreigners and ignorant of what German occupation would've entailed, which was the alternative.

Really enjoyed this video and I loved the detail. The invasion of Denmark was far more significant than most people think, Germany securing control of the Skagerrak Strait (and airfields near Aalborg) meant that the Royal Navy was completely denied access to the Baltic Sea. The airfields at Aalborg would also prove instrumental in launching paradrops into Norway in the main attack. Another thing I'd mention about Operation Weserubung is that it had more strategic importance than just securing iron ore, it was also about beating the Allies to the punch in terms of securing Norway, but in a broader context it is definitely about iron ore. Great video 😀

@@aarengraves9962 No that's not the reason at all. German planes could not really reach scotland from iceland as the distance is too great, with the exception of the Heinkel He 177, but this was a bomber, and whilst you could fly that over, it would have no protection from enemy fighters. The reason the British invaded Iceland was naval. If Germany took over Iceland, then they could use it as a naval base to conduct repairs and refuelling in the atlantic. Furthermore the UK-Iceland-Greenland gap in the atlantic provides a brilliant chokepoint with which to sink any ships coming from or going to Germany, and if Iceland fell, this gap would be far more difficult to exploit.
@shaddaboop7998
@shaddaboop7998 Жыл бұрын
@@mappingshaman5280 I went to Iceland many years ago (2013, I think) and they really, really didn't like the British being there. Quite a lot of their national museum was set aside for talking about how evil we were for occupying them. Strangely lacking the context of what the occupation actually was - they were allowed to retain all their political autonomy except foreign affairs, temporarily, until Germany was defeated. No mention at all of how Icelandic women who fell in love with Allied servicemen stationed there were treated. Many were assumed to be either insane or to have been raped and were institutionalised (no, I'm not joking). In some ways that insularity seems to have changed little, even in Reykjavik, met some nice people but many were extremely cold and in some cases downright rude despite me being completely polite and friendly, and I wonder if it was because I'm British (Scottish, but all the same to them I assume). I've travelled to a lot of countries and some have definitely had a cooler atmosphere than others from the locals, but Iceland was on another level, of downright hostility from some people.
@shaddaboop7998

@@L333gok They didn't support the British, at all. The local authorities were extremely unhappy about the occupation and viewed it as being dragged into a devastating, far away war they had no reason to be in. Iceland had no military (not even any stationed Danish units at the time) and the local police force of Reykjavik wasn't exactly going to put up a fight against a landing party of Royal Marines supported by four Royal Navy warships.

Denmark's strategic importance for Germany was limited. The invasion's primary purpose was to use Denmark as a staging ground for operations against Norway, and to secure supply lines to the forces about to be deployed there. An extensive network of radar systems was built in Denmark to detect British bombers bound for Germany. The attack on Denmark was a breach of the non-aggression pact Denmark had signed with Germany less than a year earlier. The initial plan was to push Denmark to accept that German land, naval and air forces could use Danish bases, but Adolf Hitler subsequently demanded that both Norway and Denmark be invaded. Denmark's military forces were inferior in numbers and equipment, and after a short battle were forced to surrender. After less than two hours of struggle, Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning ended the opposition to the German attack, for fear that the Germans would bomb Copenhagen, as they had done with Warsaw during the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Due to communication difficulties, some Danish forces continued to fight, but after a further two hours, all opposition had stopped. Lasting approximately six hours, the German ground campaign against Denmark was one of the shortest military operations of the Second World War.[8]

Very well made video. My grandfather was serving in Southern Jutland that morning. He was part of a motorised company that was supposed to travel down from Central Jutland to reinforce the border units. They had not been allowed to practice this move. They had not been allowed - not even the officers - to survey the positions they were supposed to defend let alone prepare them. The government was that much set on "not provoking" the Germans. When it finally happened and they got the call to go immediately after the border crossing, they drove. But since the company commander was not locally known and apparently got lost, he stopped the column to ask for directions. The troops were told to dismount for smokes, leaving their weapons in the trucks as they wandered to the other side of the road to strike up a chat with a farmer's daughter (from what I was told). As they all stood there, the German van of motorbikes with machine gun equipped sidecars drove into sight and just halted, pointing the guns at the Danish company. If just one had played Rambo and run towards the trucks for a weapon, the casualty list would be radically different. My grandfather was briefly interned in a POW camp but released and would soon after join the Danish resistance and rise in the ranks in the department of Western Jutland. Thank you for making this video.

my great grandmothers parents were german, and she lived in the southern part of Denmark (Jutland) that had been german since the war of 1864 and became Danish again after the first world war, she was danish minded, but had alot of german minded friends. She was looked down upon after the war, for keeping up her german friendships and having them visiting. It was a weird period for alot of Danes in that region, bring up alot of wounds. I lost an ancestor in WW1, because he was recruited for the russian front, he was Danish minded, and hated going, but did not have a choice.

So dont go arround saying "nO wOnDeR tHeY OnLy lAsTed 6 hOUrS" They could have survived for much longer pal. And another reason to Denmark being one of the fastest nations in all of ww2 was because of it being ONE OF THE ONLY COUNTRIES WITH NO ALLIED HELP, Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium and many more all got help from the allies bruh. @@TheGilliams
@newhoi4guy
@newhoi4guy 11 ай бұрын
@@TheDaneOfficialWhere did you get your facts? The reason why NO ALLIED HELP was because it was before broadcast and the impossibility for the British to arrive in time AND with the German Navy already there; The British intervention of the Faroe Islands and Iceland was because it wanted to KEEP the Germans away to control more territory. They also had irregular radio communications, so what makes you think that? The Germans had already deployed the Kriegmarines in the naval bases of Norway. You might forget about the German air bombing Copenhagen and many other cities. The Royal Danish Army was warned of the attack, but it was denied to prepare defensive places as the Danish government didn't want to give the Germans any provocation for their actions. Also, stop thinking that Poland was more special. The German Navy blocked the path and Britain only had 6 regular army divisions at the start of the war, and by the time they EVEN could be transported to Poland, the Polish would be lost anyway by the intervention of the airforce and the Russians. It was their own fault to believe that the Allies would not declare war if they had set up a riverline further away so that Gdańsk could be taken freely. Even if the Norwegians got help, it was barely enough to hold the Germans out. *Read my paragraph slowly, and get real sources before saying all that.*

Not when you consider that the country was completely disarmed "Not to provoke Germany" The only defense we had left was a few garrisons in southern Jutland, the royal guard in the capital city, and 52 royal marines to man the royal ship, which features no weapons and is just a leisure/residence ship, 78 meters in length.
@rosie8059
@rosie8059 Жыл бұрын
It's not exactly a burn. Surrendering was the correct move, since it allowed Denmark to keep the government and police force, who then looked the other way when the Danish resistance smuggled almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark to Sweden. If not for the surrender, thousands of Danish Jews would have been murdered in the Holocaust.
@Thor.Jorgensen
@Thor.Jorgensen Жыл бұрын
@@rosie8059 No, the Social Democratic government was in all practicality stripped of power. It was the Reichsbevollmächtigter who controlled Denmark from the beginning until the SS general Werner Best took over. Germany demanded a one-party state in Denmark and elections were halted permanently. They were forced by the Germans to institute state censorship in violation of the constitution. Honestly, I could keep going on for several pages. This would be a very long comment.

I'm nitpicking here at 0:13, but the reality was that Germany needed the iron ore exported from neutral Sweden via Norway, not directly from Norway. It was just Norwegian ports that were transporting it, and the Germans couldn't risk letting the allies occupy Norway.

Which of them ? 1628 ? 1864 ? 1940 ? 1940 was the worst one, lasting five years. But there were several German invasions in Denmark, the first already during early middle age under emperor Otto II. Later came Wallenstein and the Prussians under Wilhelm I and Bismarck. The Danes had many times live under fear to be attacked and occupied by the big neighbour in the south. Already at the time of emperor Karl "the Great" around 800 the Danes felt forced to buid a wall of protection along the border, the Danevirke.

Fun fact: The danes could have held out for longer, they had an army of 80,000 men and if they deployed them on the border and in the major coastal cities and actually organised a defence, they could well have held out for 5 days or so and even inflicted maybe 2000 casualties on the Germans, but their cities would have been burned and their people killed, the war would have been lost anyways and they wouldn't even have dented the German war machine. The Danes knew that whether they win or lose the war is completely out of their power and up to the French and British to decide. They knew that defience would have not been worth it, and they surrendered. In exchange, the German occupation of Denmark was extremely gentle not only by Werhmacht standards but by international standards aswell. Surrendering was the best decision
