In the second round of France's legislative elections on Sunday, the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) landed a surprise win over the far-right National Rally (RN). None of the alliances achieved an absolute majority. DW's chief political correspondent Nina Haase spoke to German Green Party lawmaker Tobias Bacherle about the election results and their significance for the EU and German-French relations. Despite RN getting fewer seats than predicted in many polls, Bacherle still sees the outcome as a warning, and argues that the far right is on the rise.

People who want to maintain the status quo vote moderate. People who are desperate for change vote far (left or right). Why is this so difficult for DW to understand? How many more "far right is on the rise" reports do we need to hear about?

The far right? How far right are they? Why dont you use the word far when referring to the left? Are you implying that conservatives are extremists? Say what you will but i hope all of Europe swings right because people have had enough of socialists, communists, globalists.

the far let is Lutte ouvvrière in France and they did not win a seat. And despite your fantasy people had more then enough of nationalists, we don't have fish memory like you, we know how WWII started. At least don't speak about France, you don't know a dam thing about what is going on here, otherwise you would have known that you beloved RN had no chance at all to get a majority.

The NFP was formed from 9 leftist parties, and the RN still received 10% more in the popular vote. That popular vote will be bigger in 2027 and that will only be a two person race.

Have any journalists done, you know, journalism? Gone out and talked to people, found out what their concerns are, and why they vote the way that they vote? Or do all journalists prefer to sit on padded chairs in comfortable offices, making stuff up because they "know" what is going on? It sure seems like it.

The story isn't so much "defeat" of the rights it is good news that left, right, and center now MUST cooperate. "Troubling"? Why? Don't you believe in democracy? Another country's democracy. How many seats are "too many" for any party. And who cares what "Moscow" thinks. When you say fascist, it is nothing more than name calling. Enemies? You betray your own version of extremism. the lesson was that France was a surrender monkey then, and if DW has its way, it will always be one. I'm reminded of a joke: Q. why do the French plant trees along the Champs Elysee? A. because the Germans like to march in the shade. except that in order to modernize the joke, the answer could be changed to: because the jihadis like to pray in the shade.

The main thing I see in the ‘right’ movement is there is not any inclusive in their politics. It is for the few and for the extreme it’s not for the people. It is more for the rich people and is me me me… it’s not about saving or doing good for the ordinary person which they are trying to convince the ordinary person in, but is the average person who’s going to serve the extremist on the top? I’m with the average person sees that it’s too late.

The current left in government is precisely also doing the same. Benefiting the escalation of global war conflicts, cebilar giving to real support to Ukraine, and still use them as a humanitarian plea, they have just helped the weapon manufactures get way richer, and failing miserably to achieve any peace ☮️ Why? Because they really don’t represent left ideals in any way, it’s the same scheme as the left in the US, using distorted narratives to appeal the the humanitarianism of the people only to use it against them. So low have they fallen, and it’s sincerely frustrating to see that no side in German politics has a complete good deal for the people, they all have a small amount of good deals with the price of several other narratives that serve nobody but rich people and their own pockets. And this applies for right and left.

French politic is in great and historical era than ever. The far right is the single political party won the biggest seat. Others are coalitions formed unity not because of they like each other but to defeat the so called common enemy. After the election, each of them will be by themselves. In Germany the situation will be the same in slow process. Then, the whole of Europe will follow. However, this will be the best for many part of the Global South other than the desert oil and gas people that have missions to multiply and spread their religion with goal to dominate and control Europe based on their desert religion doctrine and conduct and that will be much worse than Ottoman did to south and eastern Europe.

@@zw9802 at least one nationalist state will want to expand, eventually. You can’t keep them satisfied, if they all believe they are more important than the other countries. Unfortunately, the only thing policing the peace is the looming threat of American military bases all over the globe.
