@@gan7940 it's been very useful! But I'd advise you not to rely only on Duolingo, but watch videos and listen to German songs too. You see, Duolingo is quite good at what it aims to achieve: introduce you to all concepts of a new language (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and listening comprehension), but, in my humble opinion, there's much more to see in "real-life German". Keep on with Duolingo, it really helps you to get started and is always available when you need to practice. But also take a look at some KZbin channels, like Anja's and Easy German (which is awesome if you wanna learn real daily life German)

The German sentence structure is like a horror film to me , I it scares me ,I don't get it.I have ordered some books on this so hopefully I will eventually get it.

They won't it is to difficult you need a teacher, verbs , adjectives, prepositions change with different case and you have to think about whether something is moving or laying... Rain on the ground can be different from rain that is freshly falling which will make them belong under different cases.. German grammar is like mathematical equations... One can never fully master lol sehr unheimlich

+Amos Pink Working on vocabulary is a must.I have read that if you know x amount of words then the grammar will fall in place.And I think that's the best way to go about learning the language.At the moment I am learning fruits,vegetables,occupations,furniture,house hold things,tools you get the idea.

kh94 Yes, although German is West Germanic while Norwegian is North Germanic. English is also West Germanic yet it is sort of the odd ball in the family and not as close as the others.

hello ania, what are the most common words that serves as "indicators" that the sentence have to be reversed versus the usual structure? you used examples with : dann, nachste woche.. and i noticed the same when the word "weil" is used. so what other words are there? thanks a lot for everything you are doing for us enthusiasts =)

Any word or idea (Sie, sie, er, nachste woche, zur zeit, Ich, Dann, Weil) will always have the verb right after- in the second position. If there is a second verb in the sentence, it goes at the end, regardless of whether it makes sense to an English brain :) So you could say "Ich MUSS in die stadt GEHEN" or "Ich FLIEGE gern". I capitalized the verbs for you.

Hallo.. adverbs and coordinating conjunctions are magnets of verbs (takes the second position). 'Weil' is a subordinating conjunction. Thus, all verbs are thrown at the end of the sentence. Example: "Ich studiere the deutsche Sprache, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten möchte." The sentence above has two clauses. The first idea follows the normal sentence order. On the other hand, the second idea was connected by a subordinating conjunction 'weil'. The verbs were thrown to the end part of the sentence.

Abby Inman the second position that you will answer ja/nein fragen. For example the question.is Haben sie Kinder.? The verb is Haben ..and the subject is Sie.that is the second position.

Reading the comments . Glad it helps some people . It is realmy no sinking in as to position ... i would perhaps appreciate an explanation that makes more sense such as before a verb , after a noun . In your examples there are few words but with longer sentences the mystery deepens .
