Instead, I accuse France of failing in its sacred duty to defend Western Europe and civilization against Nazi Germany. Even the Germans today brag that 1940 France could have defeated the German invasion with proper civilian and military leadership.

As a born and raised German now a dual citizen yank living the SW US. And from hearing or reading war stores from relatives who fought in the war etc had family in every branch of the Wehrmacht and in the WSS etc. Many have claimed that the Waffen SS, Grossdeutchland or Panzer Lehr were elite units? Hardly. Waffen SS were party favorites and the GD and PL were just oversized armored units. The only true elite units were the Luftwaffe flight crews and the Fallschirmjager 2nd only to the Uboot crews. Uboots were the most elite units Germany had. But just my humble opinion as former Bundeswehr with the 10th Pzdiv.

@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 21 күн бұрын
Just to be clear, the Falschirmjager units did not fight on all three fronts at the same time. They lost because their enemy was stronger, not because they had been spread too thin. 🤔The Fallschirmjager units that were transferred from the Soviet Union (Eastern Front) were a formidable force. All thought the paratroopers had suffered incredible casualties in their successful capture of Crete, they had rebuilt the force & re-established the same quality of soldier. They were highly-skilled, extremely-motivated & very experienced However, they suffered heavy casualties in their defence of Monte Cassino & in Ortona, primarily because there was a lot of close-quarter fighting, and especially because they faced an extremely tough enemy. In fact, during the intense & costly battle for Ortona, so much respect developed between the Fallschirmjagers & their tough Canadian opposition that the former enemies actually held official annual reunions in Ortona that were well-attended by both Germans & Canadians for many decades...that is, until very recently....sadly, there are too few surviving warriors now. Finally, because the fighting strength of the Fallschirmjagers had been significantly reduced in Italy, they were sent to France to be reinforced, re-trained & re-equipped. They fought well on the 'western front', including during the desperate battles in the Ardennes Forest, but they were eventually worn down again by a superior enemy.
