'Liberated' from Germans on German soil? I don't think so.

Good footage. Some scenes are well known but this appears more complete or differently edited.

Why did Americans take so long to move from Sicily to Milan? When it took them only 10 months to move from Normandy to Berlin?

Italy isn't Normandie. Aldo germans were surprises in France while they were more established in friendly country Italy with fortification lines

Very interesting episode. An excellent example of how the US Army was operating in 1945. My dad was a WWII ETO vetreran in the 99th Infantry Division. The 99th had crossed the Rhine in March of 1945. They participated in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket. Dad had told me as they approached a town, a small contingent of vehicles would make an advance toward the town. If they did not take any fire or meet any resistance, they would move into the town slowly. If they took fire from within the town, depending on if it was small arms or heavy artillery, the Americans would encircle the town and call in their artillery. Even if there was no German fire or resistance encountered, the thing dad said they feared the most was Hitler youth with Panzerfausts. Even though large numbers of the German Army was surrendering in early 1945, the Hitler Youth wee feared because of their fanaticism. They had grown up with the Nazi ideals and devotion to Hitler. A 12 or 13 year old soldier in a basement could take out a Sherman or half track. Because they wouldn’t surrender to the the Allies, the only remedy was to “eliminate them”. This was dangerous to the Allied soldiers and to the other German civilians that were trying to surrender. It was extremely helpful to armor support but often times it was the individual GI having to secure a building. No one wanted to be the last casualty of the war.

Turns out, if you take Leipzig from the west instead of the east, it goes a lot easier. Also, it helps if Napoleon isn't there with the Grand Armee, waiting for you.

In 1945 they didn't use 16:9 ratio film. Won't cut the top and bottom of the original footage just so it fits on modern screens perfectly

@@LookinThePastWarArchives But on 16:9 monitors there will still be a black background on the sides, even without these margins. I have a 4:3 monitor and because of these margins I can't watch it in full screen.

I believe that Chemnitz is either just the beginning or the end. Then it is in Czechoslovakia. The city of Karlovy Vary (capitulation of the general), the airport apparently Cheb and at 10:34 Loket and then Karlovy Vary. The bombed part of the city is probably in Germany, or Cheb, but that's just an estimate, no guarantee

As a born and raised German now a dual citizen yank living the SW US. And from hearing or reading war stores from relatives who fought in the war etc had family in every branch of the Wehrmacht and in the WSS etc. Many have claimed that the Waffen SS, Grossdeutchland or Panzer Lehr were elite units? Hardly. Waffen SS were party favorites and the GD and PL were just oversized armored units. The only true elite units were the Luftwaffe flight crews and the Fallschirmjager 2nd only to the Uboot crews. Uboots were the most elite units Germany had. But just my humble opinion as former Bundeswehr with the 10th Pzdiv.

Not all of the troops in this video are paratroopers. Only those who do not wear the regular Wehrmacht helmets. And interesting to see that infantry in these times just didn‘t have any body armor.

They experimented with it in WW1 but troops hated it and the few who got them straight up ditched them at the first opportunity. In WW2 the RAF had flak jackets made for pilots and naval gunners but the first flak jackets for ground troops came with the Vietnam War where again, most troops hated them.

Nothing back then you could wear could stop a rifle round - only modern ceramics and Kevlar make effective body armor possible.
