(👆 UPDATED VERSION of 'English Grammar for German Learners')
This mini-course demonstrates how English & German personal pronouns sometimes line up perfectly and other times depart drastically from each other!
In this German grammar lesson video, you’ll get to the bottom of German personal pronouns -- how are they the same (or different) from English personal pronouns?
German & English personal pronouns in the NOMINATIVE CASE line up clearly. That’s easy.
But the English OBJECTIVE CASE divides into TWO cases in German: the accusative and the dative. And that’s a bit confusing at first.
What this means in practice is that there are TWO WAYS in the German language to say pronouns such as ‘me’, ‘him’, ‘her’, ‘us’, etc.
Get ready to understand WHICH version (accusative or dative) you need to use WHEN and WHY! :-D
We use pronouns all the time in order to talk more quickly and less repetitively.
It’s pretty straightforward to learn the German language equivalents for the personal pronouns in the NOMINATIVE CASE (used for subject nouns).
But knowing when to use the accusative vs. dative case pronouns is more challenging.
The key to unlocking this mystery is to truly understand WHY one uses the accusative and dative cases. Figure that out and the whens and hows practically take care of themselves!
BONUS: 3rd person pronouns (singular & plural) line up perfectly with the All-In-One Declensions Chart, which not only makes so much sense, but also then makes it much easier to know when to use them!
Get ready for this essential ‘German for Beginners’ grammar lesson!

It might help to show dative as “to her,” “to him”, etc. so the difference with accusative “her”, “him,” etc. is more clear. Technically it’s not exactly the same, but it can help beginners to understand the different purpose of the cases.

If English is also a Germanic language and therefore related to German, how and/or why did it simplify its case system??

I thought Nachbarn is plural?
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 8 күн бұрын
Yes, "Nachbarn" is a plural German word. It is the plural form of "Nachbar," which means "neighbor." However, there is one element that can be confusing. ‘Weak’ masculine nouns will be declined in all cases except the nominative. So you will see it like this: der Nachbar den Nachbarn dem Nachbarn des Nachbarns (genitive sometimes adds an -s) Determining if it is the singular Nachbarn or plural Nachbarn will all come down to what declensions are being used with it. You can read more about that here: germanwithlaura.com/declension/#special-situations -Nicole, GwL Team
