German here , Brittas boyfriend. At first, the helmet was called offially, Helm mit Spitze', not Pickelhaube- pickaxe Hood. This helmets had been used by Line infantry and Dragons, especially by Active troops , Reserve (young men), and parts of Landwehr ( midage men) and Landsturm ( older men), other part of Landwehr and Landsturm used like Jäger ( light infantry) and ,technical troops' the Tschako. Helme mit Spitze had been also used by armed forces of civilian Administration: Police, Border Guards or Tax collectors. Also by communal Personal: Firemen and Amtsdiener/ town criers. The ball on artillry helmets should prevent the guncrew from accidents. And: At early stages of wwl sometimes the Brass parts of helmets ( including Tschako or Tschapka from Ulanen/ lancers) had only been painted with not shining paint, according to a No more existing Museum , i visited decades ago.

The plural of 'pickelhaube' is PICKELHAUBEN. Pronounced 'PickelHOWben'.
