My Great Great Great Grandfather George Justus Thielepape and his brother Wilhelm came from Germany to Texas in the early 1840's as part of Adelsverein. George settled in Austin, working as Draftsman for the General Land Office. He owned land in Austin, what is now East Martin Luther King Blvd. He was highly regarded and considered as one of Austin's prominent people. Wilhelm traveled with Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels during his trip through Texas and is mentioned in the daily personal diary of the Prince. He was later appointed Reconstruction Mayor of San Antonio, Texas. He also designed courthouses and many buildings throughout Central Texas. Amazing people....

I do not know what influence an agreement made by the Spanish authorities in Texas around 1820 with Moses Austin could have had. When Moses Austin offered the Spanish authorities to bring settlers to Texas, the Spanish authorities recommended that the families of settlers he brought to Texas be "preferably German and Irish and both preferably Catholic." The prize given to the settlers was tempting: 500 hectares of arable land in the valley of the Brazos River for every family , (which I believe they planted with cotton) or 1,500 hectares if the land was only suitable for cattle pasture In exchange, the settlers would have to dance with the Comanches ( It seems that this was following the recommendations of a Dutchman who called himself "Baron of Bastrop" or something similar.)
