I feel that when Alisa pronounces the /ɐ/ and /ɔ/ sounds alone, they sound exactly like an /o/, but when she pronounces them inside the words, they sound as I would expect.

As a native speaker I would not recommand this lesson. They claim to pronounce different sounds - like the short "a" in Wasser and the long "a(h)" in Bahn (and actually it's not just a matter , but they sound just the same. If I tried to learn it, I'd be quite confused,

I am sorry but I have to say that this video is very inaccurate. No linguist would recommend this to a beginner. It is good (and should be a given) to use a phonetic notation like IPA but fewer symbols than requierd are used and in the case of [ɐ] something completely different is spoken i.e. [o:]. These two sounds have nothing to do with one another and [o:] isn't spoken in any of the given examples. To give anotehr example, in standard German is pronounced [meːɐ̯] with a closed /e:/ and not an open one (/ɛ:/). The video is well-meant and you can see that a lot of effort went into it but unfortunately the quality is low. Beginners don't know any better and have to be able to rely on the given information to be accurate.
@FsxTime8 жыл бұрын
When I saw the beginning of the video I was quite annoyed because [ɐ], [œ], [ə], [ɪ], [ʏ], [ɔ], and [ʊ] were not pronounced correctly. I would also have liked it if they talked about [ɛ:] being pronounced as [eː] by some German speakers. For example you can pronounce Spät and wählen like [ʃpɛːt] and [vɛ:lən] but you can also pronounce it as [ʃpeːt] and [veːlən]

Ah thank you so much! I'm a native Spanish speaker, phonemics of Spanish collapse many of this sounds to only five vowels, and the video aims to native English speakers. You can guess my level of confusion!

'ɐ' is pronounced wrongly here, like 'o' instead; however when she pronounces the words with 'ɐ', she gets them right. How could she ever confuse ɐ and o? They are so obviously different.
@JCMH7 жыл бұрын
This video has several mistakes. For 'ɐ' and 'ɔ' the pronunciation is 'oː'; for 'œ' the pronunciation is 'øː'; for 'ə' the pronunciation is 'eː'. Horrible.

This is a mess! I am linguist and I know the phonetic alphabet and this is great when it comes to the initial part of the video. My best friend is a German linguist and he told me the sounds and examples are horrible to their "equivalent" sounds in English. It is painfully obvious there is a disconnect between the "equivalent" and the sounds they try to convey. :( VERY CONFUSING.

This confused me. You'd say this soudns like x and then it wouldn't, and then the words won't sound like they contain the sound said for the letter. I'm guessing in some cases you were saying the name of the letter and in some saying the soudn maybe.. but if that's the case that's confusing and tricky to practice.

Very helpful video. I can say that, I guess, English vowels' pronounciation is way harder for a non native speaker (Russian) then German ones for a Russian. That's a bit of relief tho I have a lot to learn to master the accent

+Learn German with GermanPod101.com Agreed with Despina Amantidis. At 7:36, listen to what she's saying. The German girl totally mispronounces the intended short "i", mistaking it for long "i:" sound. Perhaps it's because it's hard for a regular German speaker to pronounce short "i" alone, without special training. However, this bit of ambiguity on the video can and surely will throw many of the beginners off the right path. Please, re-do the video.

0:23: List of vowel sounds: No distinction made between short and long vowels in pronunciation. ɐ is incorrectly pronounced as rounded o like sound œ vs. ø: not clear open-closed contrast in pronunciation ə is incorrectly pronounced as e: 2:29: ɐ sounds like o: A bit bad choise of example words, since two out of three contain o: in the beginning even though we are not talking about that sound 3:06: œ Separately it is incorrectly pronounced as ø, but in the example words correctly as œ. 4:27: ø: claimed to be identical to a (with rounding), even though it should have been e: 5:29: "Länge" is incorrectly claimed to be pronounced with long ɛ:, whereas it is really with short ɛ 5:53: ə is incorrectly pronounced as e. "gesund" pronounced with e instead of ə. 6:58: Mykene is correctly pronounced with short ʏ, but the slide is about the long y: 8:08: ʏ is incorrectly claimed to be identical to i: (with rounding), even though it is identical to ɪ (with rounding) 8:37: ɔ claimed to be identical to "ought". That's ok with US pronunciation, but not with UK, in which "ought" has long ɔ:

I am sure this video has so many errors. For better pronunciation and reading everyone should ace these vowel sounds and the IPA symbols. Once familier with these symbols and the sounds it will be very easy to read any text by just glancing at the words in the dictionaries with IPA symbols. It's better to cross check IPA symbols for some sample words and compare the sounds between google translator and the IPA dictionary audio.
