Here comes an explanation: 1. “Wenn ich mit der Arbeit fertig bin, rufe ich dich an.” Here it is not possible to use “wann” because you have neither a direct nor an indirect question. Also, it is not in the combination with “wissen” and it also can’t be translated with “whenever” (wann immer) because it's a one-time event. (We assume it's one-time, that's how I translated it.) And if you try to substitute the phrase with “at what point in time” it won’t work: “At what point in time I am done with work, I will call you…” This substitution doesn’t work, because the point in time is NOT the question here. *Another good way to remember it: When you can substitute it with "as soon as", you have to use WENN: “Wenn ich mit der Arbeit fertig bin..." = As soon as I am done with work, ....* ------ 2. “…und sage dir, wann ich nach Hause komme.“ Here we have an *indirect question* introduced with “sagen”. So for example: “Ich sage dir, wann ich nach Hause komme - „Um sieben oder um acht.“ This one is clearly asking about a point in time. You want to tell the other person AT WHAT POINT IN TIME you will be coming home: “I will let you know, *at what point in time* I will come home.” Here, you can see that the substitution works perfectly, because here the main idea is to know WHAT TIME the person comes home. ---- 3. “If” in your sentence would be translated with “ob”: “…und sage dir, *ob* ich nach Hause komme”. An ob-clause can always be answered with “yes” or “no”. So for example: “… und sage dir, ob ich nach Hause komme.” = I will tell you if I come home. Either I come home or not. I will talk about “ob” in another video. I hope this clarifies this topic a little bit for you. I know it is not easy and a bit confusing. If it’s not clear for now, please don’t worry, some things take time to digest and as you get more immersed in German, it will get easier and easier and easier ... 😋

Here's my personal trick when I learned when to use "wann" and when to use "wenn" that I want to share. As a native English speaker myself (American English spoken in California to be precise), I was initially shocked to learn "wann" and "wenn" both mean "when" in English. While the word is the same in English, the way it is stressed is not, at least not for the spoken English that I grew up speaking. Some of my favorite examples are "when (wann) are you leaving?" and "I will leave when (wenn) it stops raining." and also "when (wann) will you come over?" and "I'll come over when (wenn) it is sunny." Another one is "when (wenn) you arrive, call me". 😃

I am late to the discussion. If anyone of you still need some help: If you can replace "when" by "as soon as" and the sentence is grammatically correct, when = wenn. If not, when = wann. When (as soon as works => wenn) I finish work, I will call and let you know when (as soon as does not work => wann) I will come home.

What I understand about this video that wann and wenn can both mean (when in English) depending on the sentence, and wenn can also mean ( if in English) depending on the sentence. Thanks this was helpful because I thought "wenn" only mean "if" even in any sentence.
