Cora is acting aggressive and reactive to almost every dog that walks by her and it's upsetting other parents as well as other people. In this lesson we evaluate what is causing the behavior and what we can do. The owners tried using a "no-pull" harness - wonder if that will work?!
This short video will give you the basics to understanding how my method shows a clear picture to both the dog and her owners. The full version of this lesson is available in my member section at:
robertcabral.com
Training aggressive and reactive dogs takes a clear understanding and communication. It's not about forcing the dog, it is about making the dog feel confident and safe. That is my goal in dog training. Creating safer, more stable dogs!

The part about not correcting the dog when they're close to us (and the reason for it) really resonated with me because it made me realize that I've been doing that part wrong, so I appreciate learning something new - thanks!

Hallelujah! This is it. The video I have been looking out for. I have been using this technique but not executing it currently. I am going to order a long line slip line and give this another go. I always get funny looks when I give my dog the correction out in public, but I don't care anymore. It's my dog and it needs to be trained. He can't be lunging at other dogs anymore (even though it is playful).

I think the pop and not the constant leash pressure as well is super super important. Overall I prefer to use negative reinforcement for compulsion because it's clearer and more fair but if you try to add a constant pressure to a situation like this it just builds the dog. Far better to snap them out of it as straight up positive punishment than to risk associating drive building with every dog you see.

Great video. This kind of work takes effort and consistency but its worth it. My dogs improved dramatically when we joined a training club where they got more experience with dogs being under control rather than equally reactive dogs in the park or on campus.

That is exactly the problem I have with my dog! My trainer uses only positive reinforcment and she has never told me to do a correction when there is undesireable behaviour, but I'll try your method... I'm desperate and tired of my dog lunging and barking towards other pups. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Positive only would be ideal, except it doesn’t work for all dogs. My gsd would give the dog equivalent of a shoulder shrug to corrections with leash and prong collar. What ended up happening was he learned to trust me and our bond grew stronger and that’s what ended up truly stopping his reactivity for real. The corrections had a minimal effect and lasted no more than a few seconds but through the training and bond building my word became more important to him than his own desires to do this or that.

@@marka1712 Yeah, it depends on a dog you're having definitely. I did with my rescue only positive training and he responded great when it came to tricks and commands, but with loose leash walking he didn't care about me at all. I tried Joel Beckman's method with corrections and the change was immidiate! So I guess the case with my dog is that to show him what behaviour is undesirable, I have to do corrections. Otherwise he won't care.

@@4ternum my female gsd/mal is nervy and neurotic with ocd and corrections beyond a stern look and no are too much for her. She learned everything with treats and praise for rewards and no for corrections, she also learned all the cute tricks like playing dead, shaking hands etc but the male looks at you like those are beneath him but his obedience commands are on point like a robot almost. Different strokes for different folks(and dogs lol)

This is actually the same method (or at least very similar) Beckman uses in his training. And I've got to say, this was the only method which helps me walk my dog and reactivity. Quick, short pops on the lead for him to pay attention where I'm, that he's not on his own walk with no rules. This means no pulling. The leash always needs to stay loose with only a pop for the dog to be corrected. Getting the timing is also really important but I think that comes with experience.

Good job. I was doing a LOT of focus work with my German shepherd. If I saw a situation coming that would be really hard I would step to the side, put her in a front sit and ask for focus on me. It made it very positive where she could get a reward. But other times I used the pop because she was the instigator of the problem.
@tilly_s
@tilly_s Жыл бұрын
@@sophiesmith5922 Great job! I think that in some situations, it's hard for the dog to stay in a sit or any position, especially if the dog is reactive or very stimulated to whatever is going on nearby. Then I like to practice walking or any obedience to get the dog moving and de-focusing it from another dog or whatever is causing the bad reaction. In all cases, it's a lot of continuous work with every dog. The training never stops, neither for them nor for us.

I've been doing this with my two Doberman pups even before I watched this video and overall, they have responded very well! Great technique and I think the tidbit of not correcting in personal space is crucial. I will apply that to my work with my girls! Also, is this actually aggressive behavior? Or is it excitement to get to the other dog? My pups are very friendly when they greet other dogs but are naturally slightly wary at first. Either way, it is undesirable behavior!

Great video Super interesting point about not correcting the dog when close to me So for example I take Doberman for a walk around the village …so are you saying for training walks it’s better to use a longer training lead and let the dog lunge further and then correct as you did from a distance? I have just started following you, and love your approach. My Swiss Shepherd (approx 3yrs old, only had her 8wks, but she is actually fairly well trained) does not run at other dogs on lead, but will sit beside me and growl at them. I correct her with a check chain, but she will growl again. She never pulls away. She appears to be guarding me from other dogs. How should I approach this when she is right beside me? Thanks ❤️

If only there was a place where you could rent a chill dog to help with this training! The average dog being walked on a leash today has the same problem. So passing a dog during your walk isn't going to do it.

This is an awesome video! Thank you for posting it! I have a 4 year old female GSD, she is highly prey driven when it comes to seeing other dog's. Unfortunately it also comes from us being attacked multiple times by off leash dog's. I use a herm sprenger prong collar on her, and a 6ft leash. I see you use a long line for correcting. Would you recommend me still using the prong collar with a long line to execute this same correction? So for instance, while out walking or hiking let her have more leash and if she decides to rush towards the other dog/growl react give her a firm "no" and "pop?" I hope you can respond to this. 😊

Hi not a professional here. But I have observed that pops works v good. and many balanced trainers use 6ft leash and pops for corrections. And I guess he suggests the same in some of the following comments.

Have a question Saw a video the other day I guess this owner paid big money fully trained. From what I saw the belgium was having a problem protecting the owner on any confrontation until the party who was walking up on the owner actually put on a dog bite arm suit. I know the dogs are trained with dog suits, but was surprised the dog didn't do to much until the suit was put on. Have you seen this before ?

@evilgod7659

Not a professionnal here. but I've seen as settinng up the collar high enough(around the ears where skull ends) and then jerk (not pulling continuously, and it maybe won't be a pop bc dog is near to you and so leash would be tight) upwards for corrections. Warning here! It's a very sensitive part for a dog so be gentle enough.

Try volunteering first walking dogs or call around to different dog training facilities/ kennels/ sheltera in your area and be persistent on letting them know you would like to provide them a helping hand, while you learn from them! Never be discouraged from failures you may have in the endeavor or pressure from doing this sort of work. You will learn within a few days if this is for you. Also just look up the tons of Mal videos online and you'll see you might want to train yourself with some milder dogs first before you make that jump, but don't let that discourage you!
