Hi German Shepherd Man, I loooooooved hearing the howling at the beginning of this video! That was PERFECT timing of Jay turning the camera and the microphone on, and your dogs starting to howl at the same time! I have always felt that howling is a form of communicating in the world of dogs and wolves. Thanks for the freebie😉😊 I always call a puppy's lean phase their teenage stage🤣😉 Teenage kids are lanky and thin, and "teenage" dogs are no exception. Teenage kids do NOT look mature and the same goes for puppies.

Just got our 10 week old female, Bailey, about a week ago! I was feeding her what the bag had been saying, but noticed that she sniffed around for food a lot (sniffing a lot even after going potty). They sounded beautiful : ) Feeding is complex. I feed raw and I have to vary quantity depending on how much Zed is doing. Usually the guides on the bags is way to much. Zed put a kilo on during last season,so had to cut her food by 80grams. She has lost that kilo now so have to work out what she needs now. In short it is trial and error. I use scales as it can be complicated. Plate is cleared in seconds. Really good topic Charles. Thanks to all at GSM Land : ) Looking good.

GSM.... you couldn't have said this any better. I've had two shepherds now and they couldn't have been more different than each other. My first would gain weight just looking at food. Kinda like me I guess. My second one I fed 4 cups a day and he never got over 96 lbs. I had to monitor each closely. The first that he didn't gain to much and the 2nd do he wouldn't wither away. And yes they're activity levels were complete opposites as well. Lean and mean equals healthy and easier on joints. It infuriates me to watch people fatten their dogs because they think that equals love. But what you're slowly doing is killing them!

I know I did that with my first cat, he is in a diet and happily losing weight. Since we didn’t know about proper portions that’s how he got overweight but since now we know how much we should feed be feeding him he is getting his energy back and acting more playful.

I've always felt the amounts on the bag were designed to sell more dog food. I also used to feed my dogs Victor and if I followed the bag guidelines my dogs would have been obese and I'd be broke lol

Hello GSM, I think I am feeding Koda to much. Her first poop is nice and firm then he 2nd poop is soft but still has shape. She usually poops 2 to 3 times in the morning. She eats after we walk in the morning but sometimes I put in egg or cheese to get her to eat. Her back leg is doing just fine now. She is on kelp and salmon oil and the joint pills, No vitamins yet. and then poops again before bed. Thanks. Kari

I used to feed my German shepherd 4 cups a day, and he was a healthy boy. One day my parents told me that I was under feeding my dog and proposed at least 8 SCOOPS every day. From then on I was anxious on the new diet as my dog started having consistent pooping issues on the yard. After watching this video, I was enraged. I should've listened to myself for once. My parents either phoned a untrustworthy friend for info or they were just annoyed by my puppy's begging during mealtimes. Either way, it would be wise to comprise using logical evidence.

Just checking in GSM! Kyzor was just fine.he just turned 2 last week. I emailed you in regards to an issue that we had after taking him to the vet. Come to find out, it was his Victory food. Not saying it's not a reputable company but something in it didn't agree with Kyzor. I have him on supplements and a hemp vitamin along with a half raw diet, he is super. Some dogs have a very low food drive, but most have a medium to high food drive. Those dogs especially need to be governed in what is available and when. GREAT question Brandon!!! GSM

I love your idea on using meal time as a training experience, but once I put the food down in the morning he may not eat it for hours. I try to feed him twice a day but there's times his morning dish is still sitting there at 5pm and he never touched it. I'm from Chicago so he doesn't eat more or less, whether it's summer or winter. Our GSD is 7 months old and I feel like we over feed but his poop is well formed. He eats 3 cups in the morning and 3 cups in the evening of Victor Hero. I usually keep an eye on their poops. If they are not well-formed, it may be because of too much food. I would be feeding him about a cup, 3 times a day and see if that satisfies him. Slowly increase. GSM

This video helped me so much. My 5 month old has been looking a bit thin so I figured if I fed him more he’d bulk up and ever since I started feeding him more, his poops been a slushee like! We have an updated video about raw and cooked food. Search for that...free feeding leads to problems for most dogs that are allowed to do that in my opinion. Lots of reasons for that answer that would be impossible to thoroughly cover in this reply. GSM

My GSD of 20 years ago was never a glutton either, she was a better eater than my currant one though, Worsed feeder I've ever had. As she came to me as "puppy No. 9" she had plenty of competition for food.

Great advice, but what do you do when you have a person that only feed 1 cup once a day and the animal is starving and it creates scarcity syndrome. The poop is well formed those dogs too and it's hard to watch a under nourished dogs be punished because he's desperate. He is not an high energy eater.... I've given food to him privately and let him eat and he stopped when full. I'd love a video that addresses new owners and simple feeding guidelines. The owner tells me his poop is fine. But the dog still is underweight.
