Wolves howl to signal to other wolf packs or other animals that they're entering taken territory, and to intrude at their own risk. And they tend to also howl to signal to other wolves in their pack that they're around, kinda like a "Ayo, i'm not far from you, if you get jumped or something, keep in mind that i'm around here" Also, they don't howl upwards because they like the moon, they do it because if a group of wolves howls upwards, it makes it sound like there's more wolves than there actually are. This way, 6 or 7 wolves can sound like 13 Source: i used to have a weird obsession with wolves thanks to wattpad, and i ended up reading and watching a whole lot of info about them, most of my knowledge comes from random articles or Casual Geographic
