The next chapter of the build log for my OTW German Type VII R/C model in 1/32 scale. This chapter focuses on the cosmetic aspect of the build with base paint, salt chipping, and weathering.
Once complete, this model will be fully functional, featuring working sound, ballast system, lighting and working torpedoes!

What a beautiful model. I absolutely love it. And as always, stunning work. As wonderful as the U-boat is, I still love my Nautilus more. Bob, I still have not had time to repair the damage from FedEx shipping. And I have yet to see the iris working (it was damage in shipping). That said, I love, love, love your work. And I can highly recommend you to anyone that wants a quality model made for them. I can not tell you how much I love my Nautilus. A true work of art. And having seen the original 'hero' model used to make the movie, I think mine is a better model!!!! ;-) Bob you do amazing work. And I'm always impressed with your creative ways to solve problems (like the magnetic rudder for my Nautilus).

Very impressive model and technique. Although I'm not into RC submarining, there are lots of good ideas for static modeling here. Congratulations on such a fine job! Subcribed.

I have a mount fleet sir Lancelot. In 1:32 scale that took me three and a half winters to build, your sub and my boat would look spectacular on the water together.

Hi You can paint the base colors first and can apply semi wet flour on the dry paint. Then spray the second coat of paint over the whole aera'. The flour can be easy removed,

I've done hair spray and tooth paste, but hadn't thought about flour. Thanks for the tip!

Very impressive. I am wondering if I may ask, is this a full-time job, or work you do on the side? Sure would be a great way to make a living for someone with your talents.

Bob, how would you make a net cutter on the bow?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 7 жыл бұрын
Well. .. I would likely simply design it in 3d and print in hight strength ABS or HIPS plastic. For those without the necessary skills or hardware, simply tracing the profile onto brass stock and cutting with snips and shaping with a rotary tool works just fine, too!

Are you familiar with using hair spray as a weathering method?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 8 жыл бұрын
I am familiar with that process. With RC models that will see water, I wouldn't feel confident that the paint wouldn't lift from the model over time. For static models, it works very well!
@SansP3ur

Makes sense that you wouldn't want the weathering to continue after delivery to the customer.

Hi Bob, I would give the hairspray technique a go, much easier than the salt technique and let's you chip were you want rather than were the salt is. Also it works even after the paint is dry
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 9 жыл бұрын
Tom Hugill Tom, thanks for the advice. I think I'll do a combination of the two next time. The hairspray will work well for worn or even scratched paint, but for re-creating the 3D effect of bubbling rust, the salt can't be beat!

have you heard of flicking on petroleum jelly with a toothbrush/ dabbing with a toothpick before painting? the paint doesn't cure above the Vaseline and you wipe it off after cure time....

Both horrible ways better with a cheap hairspray or come of AK chipping fluids and AKs worn effects! There really the only one that will go through the airbrush that's not made from glycerin

Absolutely too much surface manipulation! Have you seen real WWII submarines on dock?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 3 жыл бұрын
You're speaking of weathering? You're telling me that a WW2 era uboat wouldn't be rusted and beat to hell after a months long patrol at sea? A "real" WWII sub at dock is ready to leave, not coming home. And I assume you're insinuating that you have seen a "real" WWIII submarine at dock, which is likely a museum boat, well cared for and kept pretty for the tourists. If you're a veteran of WWII and have seen a returning boat in person, then I am fully ready to stand corrected on the above. If not, well... I stand by my build. Besides. It's my model and I'll model it however I want. If you don't like it, build your own. ;)
