Hi Ted, What a cracking collection of footage! Kiel Canal visit is on my ‘places to go’ list. Thanks for not adding any music. The sounds of the ships and the water is quite sufficient.

Does anyone have any idea of the average depth of the river channel ? The draught must be big on those ships .

Is it illegal to do a voice over when showing footage of the Kiel Canal to explain its history? Why don't any of the videos here show that?
@Exodon20203 жыл бұрын
Local here, not really that much to it. The Kiel Canal was preceeded by the so-called Eiderkanal, which was completed in 1784 and largely followed the Eider River and only added a breakthrough to the Baltic Sea. Jules Verne did travel its length and wrote a travel report on it in 1881. The modern Kiel Canal was completed in 1895 to enhance the local economy and enable the German Navy to change quickly between North and Baltic Sea - without having to pass Danish Territory or offering a hostile fleet a chance to intercept. The Canal was widened and deepened multiple times to keep pace with increasing ship dimensions and tonnages. There was also a second set of locks added in 1911 to match that development. Despite Germany's federalist nature the Canal has always been a federal and never a state matter, meaning it is politically controlled by people who are neither attached to nor depending on its functionality. This lead to a Budget cut from 60 to 11 Million Euros per year when the Bavaria-Centric CSU party took over the ministry for traffic and infrastructure in 2013 - which lead to a massive decline in competitiveness and may even have doomed its future.

International name: "Kiel Canal". German name: "Nord-Ostsee-Kanal" (translated north-baltic sea canal). The old Name was "Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal".
