I guess Swiss German is more like Middle High German than Standard German. Isn't that right?
@stargazer001614 күн бұрын
Yes! When we had to learn Middle High German at university, we Swiss German speakers had a bit of an advantage! It was cool.

Percentage % of mutual intelligibility with standard Deutsch?
@RazvanMaioru15 күн бұрын
I'm not a native German speaker, but I've been learning it since I was young and got my Sprachdiplom C1 level. I'd be happy if I understood even 25% of the Swiss German, it's a completely different language. I'd say it's even less similar than Spanish with Italian
@stargazer001614 күн бұрын
About "mutual" intelligibility: It's very different depending on which side you're coming from, due to exposure. Germans often have a hard time understanding Swiss German but the Swiss understand Standard German perfectly bc we grow up hearing and seeing it everywhere (books, films, radio, TV, newspaper, school, written language in public spaces).
@Slithermotion9 күн бұрын
@@BlueOcean696 Not sure about that. Germans still almost understand nothing when they come to a swiss city. It‘s easier…sure. But not easy.
