Hey rabbits!
First video in 2020, woot woot! :D Of course I chose a very special video topic for this occasion: TOILETS! Yes, let's begin 2020 on DontTrustTheRabbits with TOILETS!
In today's episode I want to share some odd, explicit and hilarious slang words with you that Germans refer to toilets with. The toilet = die Toilette? Boooooring! Let me provide you with some much funnier names you can use for... well... the loo. Enjoy!

Ein frohes neues Jahr! I have never seen anyone ask for a "Badezimmer" or "Bad" in a restaurant - but who knows... The Swedes abbreviate their word "toalett" to "toa" in general. And there are almost only unisex-toilets in Swedish restaurants, pubs etc.

They have that one in English: the porcelain throne. Also shortened to 'the throne.' An English comedian had a roommate who said, to another roommate, "Can you imagine? Me being married to Richard. I'd be rich, I'd be living like a queen." The comedian, who needed to use the only toilet said "Think about it in your room, your highness. I need to use the throne." I cracked up laughing about that.

In the British Army, you might ask someone where the Thunderbox is, although this is a little dated. We say that we are “going for a crap”, because Thomas Crapper patented a number of improvements to the original Water Closet. Before the currency went decimal in 1972, it would cost an “old penny” to use public toilets, hence the expression “ I’m going to spend a penny”. In regards to using numbers, if you are going to do more than urinate, you might say “ I’m going for a No 2”. Great video as always.

Der Donnerbalken actually also has a historic meaning - my mother told me that, after the war, they didn't have indoor plumbing and therefore no toilets. Instead of an outhouse, they actually had a Donnerbalken in their garden, which made it possible to not be overcrowded when in a family with 3 kids there was more than one call by nature. So that was a thick wooden beam on which they sat, and behind that beam, there was a trench dug into the ground, where their stuff went. When the trench was full enough, they closed it up and moved the beam a bit and dug a new one. Until they got indoor plumbing, of course - when I was at my grandparents' house as a kid, there was nothing to be seen of that facility any more.

In English we also use "porcelain throne", frequently shortened to just "throne". Semi-related are a couple humorous phrases for vomiting, "Drive the porcelain bus", "Calling Ralph on the porcelain telephone" ("Ralph" on its own is occasionally used to mean "to vomit" which must be very confusing for foreigners) and some variations on "worship at the porcelain altar". "Pot" is also used. King of confusing terms for the toilet is "head", which is what is it called on a vessel for some reason (ships and sailing are so old that all kinds of archaic language hangs about them like so much rigging) which adds onto the already stunning list of extended meanings of the word "head", which include, beyond the anatomical meaning of the bodypart you keep your brain in, "to go or set off", "Leader", "Foremost part", "Top station" and, of course, "Oral sex (universal; men and women can give and receive)". So you could say "The head headed to the head, where he got head". But we also have strange euphemisms, the "Men's room" or "Ladies' room" or just "Restroom", which cloud the meaning so much that once I was in a department store and asked the gorgeous, tall, blonde, Ukrainian shop-girl where the Men's Room was, she pointed me to the men's _department_. I clarified, "No, uh, toilet...", she lights up, says, "Oh, oh! Туалет!" and points it out to me. I like some of the British terms, Bog and Kharzi (the latter has absolutely no distinct spelling and will he spelled every way remotely related to how it sounds when spoken with a particular English accent) are great. They also pronounce "Urinal" so it rhymes with "Vinyl" which is odd... but facilitated the best little sign, in a toilet where the sink was an old, low, long metal industrial affair, "Roses are red, records are vinyl, this is a sink, not a urinal".

The porcelain throne is used here too. When you are drunk and in the bathroom with you head over the toilet vomiting, it has been said; you are driving the porcelain bus. XD ew

Vomiting, communing with the porcelain god. In fact, if porcelan throne is rare in German, you may have caught a word sneaking into German from English. Likewise, WC is very common in British English. Supposedly, when indoor plumbing was first installed in the existing houses of the wealthy, they converted unused or little used places like a closet under the stairs into the toilet.

For vomiting, there can be a special thing in a bathroom. But I only saw one once. It was called "Papst" (pope), because you bend over like pope Johannes Paul II while vomiting.

Hi Trixi, You are so brave and so funny and so enjoyable to watch. Why did I say brave... You may ask. You have tackled a subject that I have not heard anyone else tackle, ever. Important enough that I remember that die badezimmer sp? was mentioned during the 1st or 2nd day of my college German class. This was many years ago. Plus you are so much more enjoyable than my professors (2 of them) coming directly from Munich..... I speak American English normally and took Latin in High School and decided to jump into German in College. So that is why I like listening to you speak English and you speak it very well. Best wishes to you and your family in the coming year. Be Safe!!!!

Hi Trixi, love your videos. Always very entertaining and informative! In Australia we have several terms for the toilet including 'the loo' and 'dunny'. You will also hear people use the terms 'Number 1' or 'Number 2' depending on what they need the toilet for.
