I was married to a lovely German girl from Ingolstadt for 61 years until God wanted her more than I did. I learned to sit to pee minutes after our honeymoon. Luise thought missing the toilet to mess up the floor was barbaric. I think standing to pee became fashion because most men wore suspenders in the old days, and it's a real pain to have to take your pants down if you're wearing them.

As an American male, and older, I wasn't taught to sit to pee. Later I did only because I realized that the splash made a mess and I prefer not to wash the surrounding area every few days. I know that I am the exception among men in my societal experience. On the other hand when I was in Germany a couple of years ago I was impressed beyond words by the urinals. I have never seen this design before and it is brilliant! The way the contours of the urinal are designed there is no back-splash! Nice

I'm from Norway and was taught to stand up, but when I started helping in cleaning the toilet at around 12-13, I started always sitting down. I have always preferred standing, but it's not worth having to clean the stains. Whenever there is a urinal in a public bathroom, I will use that instead, because it is much more comfortable, quick and easy. It really feels like it is taboo in Norway, and when my mom yelled at me for getting stains on the floor once, she did not believe me when I told her it couldn't be me since I sit down(It was my dad's fault, but it is very rare for him to leave stains on the floor, so she thought it was me).

If you think urine stains are what's gross about a bathroom, you're kind of ignorant. What's important is bacterial growth, particularly e.coli. You need to clean your bathroom regardless of whether or not there was urine stains. If you're cleaning your bathroom less often because you pee sitting down, that's even more disgusting than having urine stains.

When I studied in Japan, we stayed at a corporate retreat for cultural orientation boot camp before our host families picked us up. The most important topic? How to use traditional Japanese toilets, the ones you squat over. Later on, everyone had stories about seeing shoeprints on the rim of Western-style toilets in public restrooms.

It's amazing how quickly cultures change. I was stationed in Germany for three years and found that German men peed standing up like Americans. What I found strange was they peed where ever. In public against a building or handy wall. When I say in public I mean in front of everyone. No they were not drunk or on drugs, it's just what they did. The women passing by didn't bat an eye. @@papplebeast5039 Well, speaking as a female, I've often thought how lucky men have it to have the convenience of turning their backs and standing to pee if the need arose with not even a shrub to hide behind. For women, it is much more inconvenient when a restroom is not available. (This is, I'm pretty sure, one of the worst aspects of camping for women.) And as I get older, and have to be on my feet at work more than feels good many days, I begin to think of a sit-down pee break as a little luxury that most men miss out on. Just looking at it from a practical standpoint. To each his own.

Back in the late 1950s, my dad taught me that "men pee standing up". My parents were raised on farms in northwestern Illinois. Peeing while standing next to the tractor (or horses before that) made a lot of sense.

Dafuq are you talking about? Does anyone care? Yes literally everyone who has to clean toilets does fucking care! No matter where you are from, no matter how your toilets are designed, if you are standing while peeing in the toilet you will get splash that goes outside and stains the floor and the toilet rim. It is even worse for cultures where man are circumcised, because it is harder for them to control their piss jet. It is disgusting to clean up piss stain and it is so easily preventable. Also what you do is simply take two sheets of toilet paper and hold it at your pee hole while standing up so the last few drops go in the paper, it is not a big deal and easy to do. And whoever is cleaning your toilet will thank you for it! It is just rude, disgusting and such an old school thing to not sit down while peeing! If you had said you don't sit down because you are scared of spiders attacking you then I would have accepted that lol but your reasoning is just ridiculous.

I grew up in America and anytime my father peed he did it standing up and that is the way I learned. I do agree with you that standing up to pee can mean missing the toilet and peeing on the floor or on the rim of the toilet. It actually makes better sense to sit down to pee and avoid the mess of potentially missing the mark. Yes, having to sit down involves more steps and time. But it does present a cleaner outcome in the end. I would also add that sitting down shows respect to others and does not force others to deal with or clean up any mess you might make by standing up.

After the reunification of Germany, I noticed only through contact with the West, that this was probably not common over there. Or the West Germans have complained louder... I don't know. Otherwise, I know it only from the so-called 'village idiots' who peed standing up. But they also bragged about having fallen into a ditch while drunk or about having been left behind at school. So no real standard of comparison.

I'm German and I sit down to pee when I'm at home or at home of someone else (like friends home, etc.). I do pee standing and use the urinal at work and basically at all public places and I also pee standing out in the wild, far away from humanity, using a three (or something else). I did refuse to sit down while peeing for quite some time when I was younger, up to my late teenage years. I was always careful, but realized that I underestimated the micro spay effect of peeing. At some point I could smell it and a little bit later I had to replace a heater, that was close to the toilet, because it became rusty and all of the protective paint was ruined. I decided to give it a try, hated it at first, but now I do like it a lot.

They told me that they didn't have to clean the toilet seat or anything and that makes it cleaner and nicer for everyone. 😎😎😀😀 It's not really a thing here in the US. But I agree with you, it's much cleaner for men to sit down to pee. My husband said the same thing that it's not manly, but I asked him to just try it. He did and he says it's cleaner and not messy. Watching this series from Finland is very interesting, you learn about both the German and American cultures. In here, I guess it really depends on the family, in my family men usually sit down to pee at home (the toilet seats also tend to be quite low and the men in our family are quite tall, so that makes aiming even more difficult). And I think only one person has ever commented on that, so it's probably not that unusual. When living with roommates, I was constantly annoyed at one person who always left the toilet seat up...

It instantly became apparent how much water and urine get splashed out of the toilet when I peed standing, so I became a sitxpinkler making my bathroom significantly easier to keep clean and sanitary.

I started doing that during puberty, morning bathroom visits can be tough. But at home i used rarely sit and I definitely do not sit to pee in public. But as time progressed and now in my late 20s I actually prefer to sit weather I’m at a friends or family members house or even at my house. And I lean forward as the arcing stream slows to a trickling dribble, to make sure it all falls into the bowl. And if I make a mess of the rim of the bowl, I will wipe it off with toilet paper. Am I allowed to pee standing?

Used a #9 French catheter with a microwave emitter in it that "cooked" the prostate and enabled the patient to pee again. And no loss of "other" functions... First time I saw it I got light headed and had to sit down. I hope I never have to have something the diameter of a 9mm bullet placed there!

This actually happened in America btw and I thought it was so bizarre: I worked at this office building with a shared bathroom among all the different companies in the building. Of course the bathroom gets quite crowded and the standing stalls were often all taken when I enter so I'd just go into the toilet and start peeing there, standing of course. One day, after exiting from the toilet, the janitor confronted me and said that I'm not allowed to pee in the toilet and must use the urinals. I've never heard of this rule ever in my 30 or so years I've been alive at that point, at least in the US.

Since suffering spinal issues about 13 years ago, for which I have had a couple of operations, I have had problems with the 'signalling' system. Put bluntly, I can no longer be certain which need is more urgent, so it is much safer to sit, as then I can 'operate freely' until I am confident that all needs have been met.

For me sitting on the toilet is messier because I seem to have quite a high peeing pressure. When I pee standing up I can aim at certain parts of the toilet to prevent splashing as much as possible but when sitting down my ass and the toilet seat get covered in tiny piss droplets from below as my pee comes out at too high a pressure to not splash everywhere upon impact with the toilet bowl

@@m.k.2227 That is the most poorly thought out response and you are not alone. I suspect folks that think like you are city dwellers. Every living thing pees and craps from microscopic critter to Blue whales and they don't have bathrooms. Only mankind has come up with indoor plumbing. All peeing and crapping represent fertilzer after it breaks down. When you walk across your yard or a park or pasture your walking on some other species feces! Have you heard of composting toilets? Look it up with google. It makes way more since than our elaborate plumbing systems that waste huge amounts of water. Many "back to nature" gardeners these days are capturing their pee and using for fertilzer. I am not advocating chamber pots and dumping out the window on the street - supposedly happened in medival Europe. But S.E. Asia rice farmers use human dung for fertilzer and it seems to work very well. I can only assume they compost it 1st.

This is something I never thought I would come across and it's strangely interesting... Lol. In America, they literally have urinals in public restrooms that are designed for you to pee standing up. There are usually more of these than toilets in the public bathrooms, so you need to know how to stand up to pee. And now that I think about it, I would prefer not having to sit on a shared toilet unless I absolutely need to. Do they not have these urinals in Germany?

There is an old saying I once read on a stall wall in a women's bathroom. (I was cleaning the bathroom.) "If you sprinkle, when you tinkle; Be a sweetie, wipe the seatie." It is actually rude for a male to stand up in a bathroom stall and pee. IF he feels inclined to do so he should ALWAYS lift the toilet seat up before he begins; check his "gear" to make sure it is "free of debris"; aim into the toilet water; get as close to the toilet as possible; wipe off the top; the ring; and...if his aim was bad...the bottom of the toilet seat; if it was REALLY bad, wipe his urine from off of the floor...ALL with toilet paper; AND...LAST BUT NOT LEAST...REMEMBER to put the seat back down before he leaves!!! MOST men's bathrooms outside of the home has urinals and stalls and most men know which to use for which purpose however...at sporting events and fairs especially...not all men wait for an open urinal to pee in. Coming from a family of more sisters than brothers I knew these proper etiquettes and would often just sit down to pee anyhow!!! Guys???!!! NOBODY WANTS TO GET A WET BACKSIDE BECAUSE YOU WERE A FILTHY, DISGUSTING PIG!!!!...N-O-B-O-D-Y!!!!!!!

If I'm outside or there is a urinal, I stand. A toilet bowl is for sitting. And better for emptying the bladder. I never understood why anyone would do it any other way, considering the mess that can be made. If you're wearing shorts, you really realize how much slpatter there is even at a urinal. And I've seen guys in public restrooms wiping their legs with paper towels afterward. When wearing jeans, you don't notice, but the splatter is still there.
