I love the metal cases. Was going through my grandfathers shop the other day and its filled with metal cases, very much worn, but still organized.

I once read on the "Tools from the old world" thread on Garage journals about some people press in new hex if when one brakes or wear out from extensive useage.

@6:55 -- that's the 2ndary drain for the EVAPORATOR coil...not the condenser. Before getting into HVAC a few years back I would always get them backwards too.

I've only used hex sockets a couple of times, but every time I have I found myself wishing I hadn't cheeped out and bought a hardware store brand, Chinese made one. The feeling usually hits me right as the hex drive rounds over after a few uses. These look like they are actually designed to do real work. While I love the look and durability of metal cases I don't mind plastic cases so long as the insert works and the plastic is thick enough. I have a Felo impact bit set with an over molded case with routed foam insert. The case is compact with fairly thick walls, reinforced by the over mold, the the foam insert is dual layered and holds everything great. With that said I have been looking at several socket sets from Elora that come in metal cases like the one in this video.

FYI: the bevel on the socket is part of the socket production process. The hex hole is created in a process called broaching, it involves a wobbly hex cutter tool that is gradually pressed into the metal to dig out the hex bore in a circular motion. Look up rotary broaching if you're interested. Point is, a pilot hole and countersinking is required for the broach to properly start digging. The bevel you see is what remains from the countersink once the rest is cut out by the broach. You cannot start broaching without a countersink for the same reason you need centering for a drill: it goes off-track and might even break under the load. So all in all, the bevel is not for the insertion of the hex bit, but is a required part to produce the socket. I've worked for a machining company doing the exact same process for hex screws. Also FYI: like you said, the larger sizes are used for robotics. Many robot arms are assembled using hex machine screws and I've seen some 14 and 17 with my own eyes. It also goes for the screws holding down said robot arms.

For the durance test. I own this set more than 25 years. I bought it used. We haven't been always polite to it: extensions on the wrench were often used. It still is in good technical schape. I can put it on photo if someone would like I am mot sure if my brother has the same set of the Stahlwille brand or also gedore.

Love the blue box, hate the cheesy tray and foam. If I were using this set all the time I might go with kaizen foam but, like you say, it's not going to be used all that much. Good tip about backing up a weak tray with expandable foam; might try that.

I prefer metal cases; but the major downside to them is the tool companies usually put that flimsy vacuum molded liner in them. The liner lasts for several years and then just starts cracking and disintegrates. I've seen a few tool restorers replace it with custom cut craft foam, wooden inserts or as you said spray expanding foam into the backside of the liner.

Jujoji Custom wood inserts based on the plastic design would be awesome. Or something softer.

Too bad about the plastic socket holder - that seems all to common with metal cases. A decent plastic case usually has a decent blow-molded holder inside. I actually care more about that part than the outer shell, but if I can get a good metal case with a decent tool holder, that's worth extra to me, compared to a plastic case. On the other hand, if the insert is junk, and I can get a halfway decent plastic case, I'll go with that. In this case, the holder seems lousy enough that I'd end up putting the sockets away in my tool chest and tossing the box, and I'd feel bad about it since it's so nice, and I'd prefer they put the tools in cardboard so I don't end up holding onto the nice box for two years before throwing it away.

Nice set, but it needs a 19mm. What bothers me the most about most plastic tool cases is how much space is wasted. They tend to be much bigger than necessary.

Karl Benedict More tool manufacturers need to get with the program. People want the most compact tool cases they can get. Wera have the right idea, I’d just appreciate more long lasting materials for the cases.

good review, but I noticed at 13:40 that the 12mm hex socket's black oxide coating is already damaged "bruised" with one time usage shown in this video. you can verify by checking 2:28, there are no bruises then before use!!! this makes me seriously wonder of the quality! your views?

Has anyone had issues with these I got the 1/2 and 3/8 torx set variant had issues with the square drive not wanting to fit my 3/8 ratchets, the 1/2 seem fine but a little sluggish to put on. I have seen some people have issues with the square drive on the 1/2, they are super nice quality, the bits themselves seem high quality just the drive.

@@frankkraaijvanger4937 Yep. Funny thing is that I have really cheap (So cheap that manufacturer doesn't even want to add it's name anywhere of it) socket set which is in blue metal box, plastic tray like this one and same kind of foam and I never thought that any of those things mean that it's good quality... more like that the tool itself is as cheap as possible and the money has used to the case to make it look and feel more expensive.

@davewood406
@davewood406 5 жыл бұрын
I've seen people fill those things with foam, looks like the hard way. It would be heavier but an epoxy resin would be lots easier, assuming the chemicals/solvents are compatible with the plastic of the tray.
@davewood406
@davewood406 5 жыл бұрын
My original thought was pour the resin in and letting it level, but another more time/labor intensive method would be to paint/coat the back of the tray in layers until the desired strength is achieved.

with some tools it makes a lot of sense to pay for top quality brands. But when it comes to sockets, I can't understand why in the world anyone would pay the prices that Gedore, Snap-on, etc. ask for. My Kobalt/Stanley sockets that cost about $20 per set are just as functional. There's no logical reason to spend this kind of money on sockets unless you are really into collecting, imo.
