This was one of the few beautiful games of the 90's World Cup. Germany played well until the round of 16, then played pragmatic and emotionless football, as did almost all the teams. Cameroon was one of the few pleasant surprises.

I don't agree. Germany vs. Holland and Germany vs. England were two of the most spectacular matches of the whole tournament. And the QF Germany vs. Czechoslovakia could have been if the German team converted their scoring opportunities - it would have been 5-0 after 70 minutes then (the last part was very poor indeed). Cameroon is overrated due to their surprising performance against England and the remarkable goals in extra time against Colombia. Their opening win against Argentina was very rude football and not nice to see (except for the outcome), and they even lost 0-4 to USSR in group stage. I agree that there were not too many really good matches. Brazil vs Argentina could have been one, if the Brazilians would have been able to score from their many chances. Otherwise there will be only England vs. Cameroon and the German matches I mentioned. In group stage only the first two German matches and the group with Belgium, Spain and Uruguay delivered some good football.

@@j.j.6341 Proof that the 90 World Cup was terrible is that he has the worst goal average in the history of the World Cup. Regarding the games you mentioned, of course if you take a few isolated matches it will seem like the tournament was great, but the number of good matches compared to other cups is much lower. The 82, 86, 94 and 98 World Cups were much better. Regarding Cameroon, because it was new, it ended up being a pleasant surprise, yes, those who disappointed were Holland, Brazil, Argentina and even Italy who won by 1 maximum 2 goals. In short, a World Cup to be forgotten

@@laelocara I did not say anything else. I just put in some matches that gave proof that not all was terrible. The tournament in whole was the worst, not many memorable matches. I did not like 1994 though because the last matches were not attractive. In that year there were some better matches in the first two knock out stages though.

At 2 to 1 Germany keep pushing, and thus make a third and fourth goal. This Euro, EVERYONE starts defending when they are 1 up...and the other team scores the equalizer. KEEP PUSHING! Germany had a great team, but the tournament, lowest goal score ever and insane amounts of red cards. Still, on the train from Pamplona to Madrid (inter-rail) with my girlfriend, we were listening on the radio and when Germany scored we realized there were a lot of Germans on the train! It was a lot of beers and happy people. Cheers from Norway.

Matthäus just wouldn't let his team lose in this game. This was a very strong Yugoslavia team as the success of Red Star would prove just a year later. In the second round they would knock out Spain only to lose on penalties to Argentina in the next round. Germany dismantled them in this game, which shows how strong they were.

While in the Mexico World Cup of 1986 Germany hadn't played very good football and had reached the final thanks more to tenacity and luck than to brilliance, it was a different story in Italia 90. This time the team was simply to strong not win the tournament. When you watch players like Brehme, Matthäus, Klinsmann or Völler, you'd think they could have run through walls. It is amazing what four years can do in football.

When Löw didnt resign after the World Cup disaster 2018 and wasnt fired either, we basically made failure acceptable. Whole culture has shifted since then. Flick also didnt resign after WC 22 and the embarrassing games afterwards. He had to be fired to leave. Those two coaches erased winning culture and mentality from the German team. Very hard to regain that.

Yes, löw was a problem because he never was really a great coach - the team which won the world cup was the team from Munich added with a handful worldclass players like Özil. And this Munich team was coached by Jupp Heynckes and won the triple in this year. Löw couldn't do anything wrong with this team because they had a system, a raster they studied before in the home team. After this world cup you could see that Löw was struggling more and more.... Flick was never the problem! He was successful in his club career and the national team played very well at the beginning. Then he started to test many players in nations league for example and with this guy's he lost more than he won - but everybody wanted that he is experimenting some new stuff. When it came to the world cup they became already better and then in the world cup they were very unconcentrated at the beginning and lost unfortunately against Japan. But Argentina also played bad/not better in the first games and won the title at the end. Germany was only stopped by Spain and their tactics not facing Brasil in the next games.... But this bill didn't count for Spain, they became soon eliminated. But this tactic from other teams in the group stopped Germany early. If this wouldn't have happened, Germany would have been a real cup contender in this tournament! They played really well and the team was on track becoming better and better. This tournament was absolutely unlucky for Germany. Anyway, the problems in German soccer are grounded on other aspects. The players lost the old fashioned strength and are only interested in playing technical football with individual skills and technic show. But that's not what a successful team needs. A winning team has technical skills in their rows, but also players which work hard and for all a tactical concept. A good team has always a top striker like in the past Müller or Klose was. But all this key aspects Germany lost, the players are not well trained in their youth. Anyway, that's my opinion! Good luck and cheers!

​@@michaelscore6763 It's easy to say "Germany was unlucky there and unlucky here" and "if that wouldn't have happened then Germany could have been a contender". The fact is it didn't happen and is was not just bad luck. Germany played bad and never really controlled the game not even the last game against bloody Costa Rica where they absolutely needed to win. Flick might be a great coach but he completely failed as a coach for Germany. And he refused to take the responsibility and resign. He basically stole 6 months after the World Cup where a new coach could have started building a new team and culture and just sat around while they played worse and worse. Germany have great players. They could very well achieve the results they used to but they don't have the culture or the standing. Nobody is afraid of them anymore. They lost so much respect. Pretty terrible team used to get very far in tournaments, for example in 1998 or 2002. Even the team in 1986 played awful except for the semi final. Difference was that everyone knew, Germany could score from nothing and feared them. No German team ever went home before the quarterfinals from 1934 to 2014. Thats 80 years! Now they couldn't even get out of the bloody group stage twice in a row. That's embarrassing.

Fantastic game and tactical win by Beckenbauer's Germany. From the start, this match was 50: 50 as both teams were equal in strength and skill. But this time, Osim had more depth and quality on the bench. He didn't use enough Savičević, Boban, Boksic, Suker or Prosinečki, all cocky and extremely capable , all world class doctors of football

Yugoslavia at the same time = Stojković, Savićević, Boban, Šuker, Jarni, Sušić, Bokšić, Prosinečki, exactly the same skill and even more creativeness and flamboyancy, all of them true world class, only 3 years before Youth World U-21 champions in Chile. As i've said above, the only difference was in coach, as Franz and the people around him were far more tactically and strategically wise.

Really amasing german team. I didn't born at that time (I was born 1992) but my farher was told me that he chereed for Germany like as was playing Croatia. And that year Germany won World cup he was really happy. For example as Croatian I like Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Austria, Czechia, Ireland, Ukraine, Malta, San Marino etc but that countries are not so successful when is World cup in football and when Croatia drops out of WC I'm cheering for Germany. Mainly Croatia was part of Yugoslavia like one of republic and before 1990 my dad was cheering for Yugoslavia (he didn't have other homland at that point than Yugoslavia) he always love Croatia but it was like some dream (and Croatia was his dearest republic in Yugoslavia) but after mess in Zagreb at May 13th 1990 before the match Dinamo Zagreb - Red star Belgrade at stadium Maksimir he started cheering against Yugoslavia and he told me some stories when he watch this game with his friends and they were all happy when Germany won 4-1. Next year Yugoslavia was attacked Croatia and he was one year croatian soldier at Homeland war and he survived so it's nice that he cheered against Yugoslavia that moment.
