Since being in Germany for a longer period of time now, I noticed that Germany has changed me (Phil says for the better :). Have you noticed similar changes? 😀 Also, we want to state that even if some of these things are pretty "German" doesn't mean they aren't common in other countries as well! There are wayyyyy more similarities than differences and we just wanted to talk about the changes in this video. 🤗💜

One good reason you guys might not have thought about to live in the Rhine-Ruhr area like Köln is it's proximity to Belgium and the Netherlands, so during the summer it would be easy to just go to a nice seaside or beach area in the Benelux, at the same time the region is still close enough to airports like Amsterdam or Frankfurt .

Unfortunately in Germany, you see less and less real bakeries. Most of the so called bakeries, receive deep-frozen industrially produced bakery products that are simply thrown into an oven in that specific outlet. This has nothing to do with artisanal baking. If you have a real artisanal bakery in your neighborhood, support it by all means!
@leifdehio21514 жыл бұрын
@@marcuszaja6589 I used to have a really good artisanal bakery in the Bavarian village that I live in, but unfortunately the owners decided to sell it a few years ago, so one of these "Aufbackshops" moved in and since then, the quality of the products being sold, has been light years away from what was being produced previously (they also had their own sourdough bread and a delicious potato bread). Quite sad - but I suppose that's what you call "progress" 🤔

I have a mix of both...there are two bakeries close to me which are outlets of two traditional bakeries. Some of the stuff is just "thrown into an oven" there two, but it COMES out of a proper "Backstube". before getting there. Sourdought and similiar are an option. Like, in one case this is the only "outlet" of the bakery, and in the other case there are a few, but in both cases the "central bakery" is in my own town (just not in walking distance like the "outlets" are). I have tried and there is no difference between the stuff they sell in the outlet and the one they sell in the "central bakery".

The Prussian King Friedrich II even gave the "Kartoffelbefehl" in the late seventeen hundreds. Every farmer was to be educated on potatoes and should plant them where any free space was. The bäckerei yummy goodness!! And now I’m crying reminiscing!! Ok, fertig. By the way, I agree with everything you said about how Deutschland has changed you.

I love your videos! Thanks for sharing your amazing experiences for both of your beautiful countries. With your videos it helped me consider Germany as a country to immigrate soon. Although, my top lists are: New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, U.S & Canada.. Just sharing! Cheers to both of you! ☺️😊

Leggings look like trash here in the US. Wear them to the gym or yoga but not in public. During the summer, a lot of girls dress really trashy too.

I love potatoes! One of my favorite original dishes is the Hot Mess. It's country fried potatoes mixed with your choice of meat, usually spicy ground turkey with pepper flakes, your choice of cheese (usually shredded Mexican cheese), and a ton Siracha (I freakin' love Siracha!).

Deana I couldn’t agree more about wearing leggings in public... American women will do their hair and makeup and wear leggings and a sweatshirt and that is a perfectly normal way to run around in public, especially if you’re just going to the grocery store. I tried it once in Germany and immediately felt uncomfortable. I now make sure I am dressed up a little more when in Germany, even if I’m just going to the supermarket! Also, I had to laugh when you said the coffee and cake culture is “your favorite” and Phil said “that just means she likes it” 😂😂 this is a frequent topic of conversation in our house as well. I always say “I love that!” Or “that’s the best!” Or “that’s my favorite” and my husband thinks it’s a bit dramatic 😆. He always says “how can so many things be your favorite?” Germans would say “I like that” or “that’s quite nice” but rarely use the words “love” or “favorite” to describe things they like (at least from my experience).

What is missing in Germany is the ability to find potatoes by variety. Germans sell them by how they behave when cooked (floury, firm, etc), and they have far fewer varieties to choose from.

I have absolutely loved potatoes. What I notice is German's have so many different kinds of potatoes. Each potato is used for something specific. Soup potatoes are different from baking or fried. Some are more starchy then others. So weird, but I can eat potatoes in any way made. 🥔 🥔 🥔 🥔

I think the casual "looking like you go to the gym" is replaced in Germany with "looking like you go for a hike". Wearing hiking clothes like Jack Wolfskin or other Outdoor brands is very common in casual situations.

The problem with including sales tax in the sticker price is, it's not only states that have different tax rates but also cities and special-purpose districts (transit, parks, sewers), and the boundaries go through the middle of cities. So if an identical product in one store has a different sticker price in one neighborhood or an adjacent city, it looks like one store is ripping people off and people won't shop there, but it's really just a difference in the tax rates. A sticker could show both the pre-tax and post-tax price, but most stores would just show one price, so you can't tell how much the store is a good deal and how much it's a high-tax district (and high taxes pay for better services). And sales tax is not that much; the highest sales taxes are around 11%.. You just add 10% to the price (as easy as converting millimeters to centimeters), and don't worry about the pennies. I understand Deana may FEEL annoyed by it, but I've spent time in countries with VAT (although not an entire year), and the US system doesn't bother me that much.

In my small town, in rural PA, our grocery store is closed on Sunday. We have a dollar general too though and it's open every day. I drive 2 miles down into town to go to the store and I usually go every day. ☺ My family has always eaten a lot of potatoes, with almost every meal in some form.

I'm German and don't like potatoes and let me tell you I'M DEFINITELY THE ODD ONE. I can't even count the many looks of disbelief I got for telling someone that I don't like potatoes. I know no one else who doesn't like them. Even people (I know) who don't like any vegetables at all, still eat potatoes. French fries and (thoroughly) mashed potatoes are okay, but I usually don't eat any other form of potatoes. Potatoes aside, food wise I'm not very German at all. I don't really like sausages, bread, beer, onions and asparagus. Sounds complicated to cook for me? Give me some pasta with tomato sauce and I'm happy 😄

Try explaining to others you have a potato starch intolerance! I swear, the stares I get!!!! Depending on the type of potato I actually get really bad stomach cramps! Like the cheap potato chips from the discounter, if I have more than a handful -> stomach cramps. A plate of gnocchi -> stomach cramps and so on and so forth. "Luckily" my mum and bro have the same problem so I grew up eating rice and noodles. Probably why I usually cook Italian or Asian dishes nowadays ^^' I didn't use to like onions either, I've gotten better about that, but I'm still not a fan of Sauerkraut or brussel sprouts (Rosenkohl). My brother hates asparagus, too! And you know what, I don't like meat. The darker the more disgusting the taste is. I so do not fit the German food stereotypes. I do like rye and multigrain breads, or better yet, bread buns/rolls, but Pumpernickel is disgusting! And yeah, what do foreigners associate with German cuisine? Beer, bread, meat, Sauerkraut and potatoes xD

VAT has to be included in the price in an end consumer sale by law. Here in Spain a personal bubble is practically nonexistent. My feature dish when cooking is the Bauernfrüstück.

In the US the taxes have to be added on afterwards because you have state tax city tax , and federal tax . This different in every city and state. One state might have 8%; one might have six and one might have no city tax. One might have no state tax, so they can't make it one price. You have to remember the United States are United States. The states have a lot of autonomy to do what they want.
@ntm_aka_badluck4 жыл бұрын
The argument is not about the different taxes in different states. The argument is, that a store should be able to advise those directly on the price tag. The tax will not change for the products in stock anytime. (online shopping is a different thing here, i know).
