After last week's video discussing things we do not like about living in Germany, we thought it would only be fair to talk about the things we love! There isn't a perfect country and there are pros and cons to each based on personal preferences! We hope all of these aren't taken too seriously! Which country do you live in and what do you love about living there?

yes, all the points are very pertinent; i especially love that i always feel safe at any hour anywhere in any city, surely a huge difference from USA, there were many areas of most cities and even towns that a single woman such as myself didn't dare walk through, even in daylight! as i write this, it is 26° at 20 uhrs in Hamburg, and we will get 33° by Sonntag, so i'm defo broiling this weekend... food prices are so much better here than virtually anyplace i've ever visited or lived, w/exception of Thailand of course (lived there 8 1/2 yrs, will be moving back in 2 yrs) ...thumbs up, #323

I'm a little jump away in Belgium. What I love about Germany is A) The Autobahn (without limits) and B) The Nordschleife (Nürburgring). What I love about my own country (Belgium): Healthcare system, food, beer (though I don't drink much), the people are generally friendly and able to speak a few languages (we have 3 official ones (NL, F & D) and 1 de facto one (ENG) due to the international organisations). What I don't like about Belgium: the overly complicated governmental structure, the fact that a few Flemish national people want to split the country and of course: the condition of our roads! Just ruined another rim and tire this week...) Best Regards, Stijn

When I lived in Germany, we didn’t have a car for 3-4 years. We biked/ took the train/ walked everywhere. Or the bus! I miss public transportation. I live in OK, and everything is so far away from each other. I drive 30 minutes one way to get to work.

People's friendliness! If you're old or pushing a stroller or using walking aid, people will get out of their way to open a door for you, carry something or give you their seat. I twisted my leg a few years ago and visited France (my home country), no one offered me their seat while I was struggling with a suitcase and crutches while in Germany everyone was looking out for me. Don't take that for granted!

yes that's true when I was in Frankfurt 6 years ago an elderly man boarded the tram when I did and I offered him a seat in the handicap space but he said he was fine bc he had his stroller he could sit on. The tram at one point suddenly needed to slam on breaks bc I think a car or something entered onto the track taking a turn. The old man went flying onto the floor and several people jumped up to help him. I felt so embarrassed as I didn't know German yet and have anxiety so I sat there since at least 5 other people already were helping him. I felt like maybe anyone looked at me badly for not helping since I was closest but it all happened so quickly and I didn't want to get in the way either. Some even offered to help him off the tram and walk to his destination together.

It's true that Germans love to complain about Germany. 😂 Lived and worked there for two years, and my girlfriend is German (though she doesn't complain about it). I feel like a lot of Germans don't really know how good they have it. My girlfriend and I have lived in 9 countries together, and the quality of life, especially while living/ working in Germany, is amazing. I used to work as a chef. In Canada, my home country, employers would intentionally give us less than 40 hours so that they didn't have to pay benefits. Pay was terrible, vacation was almost non-existent and even sick days were looked down upon. In Germany, I had 5 weeks paid vacation, could take sick days without issues and got much better pay. I could easily afford daily life, while also going on quick trips to surrounding countries for next to nothing. It really is an amazing place to live.

Lived most of my life in Gainesville Fl, where driving anywhere was constant bumper to bumper traffic and lights. Then we moved to Richmond, Va, where there's hills and curves and tons of country roads, and driving was actually fun. I kind of miss fun driving, but yeah, not having a car is liberating. No worrying about traffic, parking, or falling asleep at the wheel because I've done too much in a day.

I currently live in Kansas City in what amounts to a suburb. It is about 4 - 5 miles to shopping and church and more to reach some restaurants. But, I don't go out much and really only drive once a week to get groceries. I like it here as it is comfortable and familiar. I have a decent sized house (now that the kids are grown and on their own) with a good sized yard that I enjoy spending time in. I listen to music while outside, so Ruhezeit would be a bit of a change for me. I am planning on moving back to my hometown in Bavaria in a couple of years when I retire and look forward to the slower pace of life, having family near, and having the ability to travel about Europe again (I lived in Rome for six months back in 1980). I think I'll miss a lot of the familiar conveniences of the US when I move, but everything in life is a trade off.

Hi you two! Thank you for this very informative video. I thought about a dish my wife and I, had while visiting Madison Wisconsin, we were both born in Wisconsin. Being in Germany you guys might have already had this, but just in case you haven't, here goes. This is a very loose description as I don't have a recipe for it. Okay, take a bratwurst, and remove the meat from the casing, form into patties and fry them, poach an egg for each of you, make a slightly mustardy hollandaise sauce, toast up some dark rye bread and build an eggs benedict for each of you, absolutely delicious. Enjoy, when I remembered this dish I thought of you two nice people. Take care! 😀

Maternity leave is 60% - stil very good, of course! Not being able to be fired after three months is not true, unfortunately. You get a larger timeframe (Kündigungsfrist) where you are still employed, but already know your termination date. Any suggestions on train passes for Germany. My husband and I are traveling to Tübingen for medical treatment next week. We have to travel back once a month for a whole year so we plan on visiting lots of cities on our trips. Any suggestions on the best pass to save money on trains?
@steemlenn8797
@steemlenn8797 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the price structure is not easy to understand. If you would only use local trains, you could try getting the "Deutschland-Ticket" (49€ ticket). It also allows you to use (most) buses and trams. But that's likely only for germans and it's a (monthly endable) subscription. (After all who would buy a car if it would be too easy, right?) A second alternative is the Bahncard 50. A 50% reduction on train fares for... whatever it costs now. I never traveled enough that it was wort it for me.

I love the windows and blinds, in Europe, esp Germany. Yes, from personal experience it is VERY easy to get around Germany without a car! The thing about the social welfare system is it makes people too dependent on it, and businesses are handcuffed with marginal workers because it is too difficult to fire them! Germany has VERY high taxes to support all those safety nets! Can't dig anywhere in Germany without getting an archeological study done before which is very involved and costly! That's why many places are built on top of rather newish buildings that have been razed because they have usually already been studied and it's easier to get permits to rebuild on the site.

2:55 "blackout blinds" my landlord build them on the most useless windows in my apartment and not on the importaint windows which sucks AF, the kitchen has one but not my bedroom and that sucks a lot cause the one I bought that you hang into your window (no drilling holes into the wall needed) are shit since they allways fall off when I have the window open during summer and decide to open or close them to let light in -.- I told my dad about this and he literally just gave no fucks and said "yeah and? you just don't have pre-installed blinds in your bedroom, I don't see an issue here" because he sleeps not giving a shit if he maybe gets blinded by a street light or a passing car at night urg

I think Germans hardly have a plan to go and see all 16 states, they simply don't care for states, that's just administrative units. As a tourist you rather categorize your destination by geographical areas, like the Schwarzwald, Alps or the North sea coast.

I would say, it depends on what you want to see. For Christmas markets it obviously has to be the end of the year. For wine festivals, the fall/autumn. But for visiting tourist sites during the typical vacation times these sites can be horribly overrun. BTW: should you ever want to see the original Oktoberfest, come in September. No, I am not (!) kidding! If you come in October it will be over. No, you don't need Tracht/ folkloric clothing. It's totally fine going there in normal street clothes. Especially don't buy the cheap knock-off crap. You'll stand out like a sore thumb and be the target of ridicule. It's like buying your favorite sports teams' outfit where the name is misspelled, the colors are just off a tad, and you've combined it with the scarf from a bitter rival. Right along those lines.😂

Late August to mid October is perfect: Still warm and sunny most of the time but not as hot as from mid June to early August. Late April to early June also works, but then it's main allergy season, the weather can be unstable, and water temperatures of lakes, rivers, and the sea will still be too cold. Visitors also really appreciate the early autumn time when the leaves begin to switch colors. For Christmas Markets you obviously have to visit in December when it's much colder and you get rain or, if lucky, sometimes snow.
