Germany is the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth-largest by nominal GDP in the world, and fifth by GDP (PPP). The country is a founding member of the European Union and the Eurozone. The economic model of Germany is based on the concept of the social market economy. In 2014, Germany recorded the highest trade surplus in the world worth $285 billion, making it the biggest capital exporter globally. Germany is the third largest exporter in the world with 1.13 trillion euros ($1.28 trillion) in goods and services exported in 2014. The service sector contributes around 70% of the total GDP, industry 29.1%, and agriculture 0.9%. Exports account for 41% of national output. The top 10 exports of Germany are vehicles, machineries, chemical goods, electronic products, electrical equipments, pharmaceuticals, transport equipments, basic metals, food products, and rubber and plastics. Germany is rich in timber, iron ore, potash, salt, uranium, nickel, copper and natural gas. Energy in Germany is sourced predominantly by fossil fuels (50%), followed by nuclear power second, then gas, wind, biomass (wood and biofuels), hydro and solar. Germany is the first major industrialized nation to commit to the renewable energy transition called Energiewende. Germany is the leading producer of wind turbines in the world. Renewables now produce over 27% of electricity consumed in Germany. 99 percent of all German companies belong to the German "Mittelstand," small and medium-sized enterprises, which are mostly family-owned. Of the world's 2000 largest publicly listed companies measured by revenue, the Fortune Global 2000, 53 are headquartered in Germany, with the Top 10 being Volkswagen, Allianz, Daimler, BMW, Siemens, BASF, Munich Re, E.ON, Bayer, and RWE. Germany is the world's top location for trade fairs. Around two thirds of the world's leading trade fairs take place in Germany. The largest annual international trade fairs and congresses are held in several German cities such as Hanover, Frankfurt, Cologne and Düsseldorf.

I'd say it comes down to a) quality and b) education. Germans by large are highly qualified because university is affordable to pretty much everyone. It costs roughly 1200 Euro or 1.500 US-Dollar a year to attend, so fees are very low. While in the US almost everyone I know had to go deep in depth to afford university a students job is typically enough in Germany (most students do get a bit of support from their parents for accommodation costs), which leads to a fairly healthy society. German law also provides a lot of job security - if someone wants to fire you, they need to inform you 3 months in advance which leads to loyalty. In the US you don't have to be a good manager, you can hire and fire at will - in Germany you need to plan way more in advance which leads to high efficiency - I think there are not a lot of countries out there exporting as much as we do :)

i dont know what it is but i have really some theories on that : -living in the north: old old ancestry had to survive when migrating from s to n. so only the smartesr survived abd yeah maybe the offspring is smarter. also adaptions to the raw climate needs some thinking which might have an impact on intelligence. - the situatedness of germany amidst all the other countries: tension and also migration from these countries probably cause some advantage on intelligence and creativity (maybe including the mingling of genetic material) -lack of resources needs alternatives (-> thinking required; japan eg is in the very same position!) - and im kinda really convinced that the language has to do with it. ive once seen a doku about german being a "head"-language which might force people into more action as a result of thought processes and whatevee there is going on - germans value knowledge which might be a result of some of the above stated claims! sounds all weird but there might be some explanations though everyone commonly knows that the grwat composers had a really great support system likr thet got much much money from monarchs or others to compose works. modern good composers are probably also from other countries and so on and so on! btw theres no such thing as an uebermensch.

The real reason the Germans have strong exports is their beggar my neighbour approach. The high WTO tariffs and non-tariff barriers that are applied. The unfair exchange rates around the EU, fostered by the Euro undervalued for Germany, overvalued for others. The tight monetary policies of the German run ECB. The surpluses that Germany runs, expecting others to open their borders for German goods, whilst refusing to buy enough back from other countries. Fortunately the rest of the world is waking up to this, with Trump threatening to level up the tariff barriers, and the rise of populists in France, Italy, the UK, Poland, Hungary, Greece, etc. who are fed up with German domination. Respect to the Germans for their work ethic, but to pretend that other peoples are not equally capable of hard work and innovation is nonsense.

No, it has been a dream of leftist politicians for long. They just liked bragging. In reality collective bargaining by labor unions has a strong tradition here, so it did not change that much.

Nonsense as German was responsible for attacking the Soviet Union and murdering 26 million soviet citizens, as they were responsible for destroying the rest of Europe, the holocaust and never paid their debts. It was only because they were the spoilt child of America.

rich country etc xD what are you talking about. i dont see any of this in everyday life here. i mean of course we have a good welfare and all that stuff but there is also a high ammount of child poverty here, trains and busses are seldom on time and the services in stores (like electronics) are usually not that good

You have to compare it with other countries. Then you know what you have. I'm Spain for example it is very hard for young people to find jobs. In Germany it's rather a question of what kind of job you want. You'll get one anyways

well, you guys wanted to have a "wall" against the soviets in central europe, so you better pay for it. i'm just kidding tho. you also can't compare the usa at the time of roosevelt/truman with the usa post clinton/bush. while i have nothing against america as a german and acknowledge that part of my living standard goes back to the marshall plan i also have to point out that the interconnection between politics and capitalistic powerhouses in the us has gone rampant. the politics of bush (+his son after clinton) and clinton that have only been reinforced by the political mainstream greatly threaten the american middle class which is just so damn important for constant economic security as we see in germany. while this sort of politics is becoming a greater danger to germany as well nowadays there are still strong barriers (comparable to glass-steagall, citizens united vs fec) that prevent it to become a problem as huge as in the us. i would very much like to see the us to repeal the systemic political corruption that prevents the legislature from regulating anything and the chokehold the banks have over the american middle class to once again prosper through all economic classes because that's what brings long-term success. ps: +krishna murthy you forget stalingrad. the nazis fucked that up all by themselves.

I use to be an enthusiastic fan of the Euro but I've started to change my mind. This currency is ruled only in favor of Germany, their population is getting older faster than any other country in Europe and this is why they don't want inflation (inflation is good for young people (high debt, low savings) and bad for old people (low debt, high savings)) this way of ruling the Euro is not good for my country (France) and obviously not for the Greek. I don't blame the germans for what they are doing, they are the dominant economy in Europe and they do what is good for them, if France were in the same situation we would do what is good for France. But it is just not compatible. Don't forget that the main reason why the German economy perform so well it's because of the Hartz laws and the labour cost dumping. The germans have sacrified a large part of their middle class (% population below poverty line Germany 15,5% France 7,9%). If France (and all other EU nations) would do the same it will just neutralize the german dumping, hurt their economy and we will all come back to the original situation with a poorer population, this is selfish and short-sighted. But the french population will never accept this kind of measures, it will be seen as unfair and unjust and the people would fight hard. It seems that there is no solution but leaving the Euro. If not I don't think we will keep our democraties for long....

of course if you artificially lower the wages (which is course unfair), the companies are benefiting from it. yes, germany has cutting edge technologies, but short of manpower. i believe in a short period of time there will be civil war in this country because of too much inequality thanks to government cuddling the industries and neglecting the need of common workers. there really are too many working poor here, living from paycheck to paycheck.

yeah, burying your heads in the sand wont help. germany is imploding. this policy of unequal distribution of wealth will take the whole economy down, sooner than later. plus, the population is ageing, within a short period of time there will be more pensioners than taxpayers. which will cause the young to leave the country, which will worsen the situation. all because germans are still against foreigners coming into the country, even skilled ones.

Bass Berr 2009-2010 recession. 2011-2014 economical growing of 0,8% per year. Poland 4% Turkey 6%. These are growing motors not germany.
@MrLexi10010 жыл бұрын
ch36799 You don't quite seem to understand what those numbers really represent! If you take at the look at the GDP of Poland (currently 814 Billion €) a growth of 4% leads to a growth of 48,84 Billion Euro/year. That's nothing compared to Germany's GDP of 3820 TRILLION Euro/year! Even with 'only' 0,8% of growth it's still miles ahead of Poland or Turkey which can be considererd developing countries!
@ch3679910 жыл бұрын
MrLexi100 germany has 82 mio people and poland 38 mio. thats the reason. Look at the Bruttosozialprodukt not GDP. Polish economy growth between 1989 and 2014 180% The difference between polish/turkish and german economy is not much. Germany has bigger crisis than those two i called. Germany is not the growing motor. Polish and turkish consum is good for european crisis.
@BewareOfTheKraut10 жыл бұрын
ch36799 That's why so many Germans emigrate to Poland and Turkey to get a job - and nobody from Poland and Turkey migrates to Germany. Get your facts straight man! Poland and Turkey are developing countries, Germany is an established economic giant. You could raise the economic growth in Poland and Turkey up to 10% by implementing water closets in each domestic home.
