Many people believe that Hitler/the Nazis invented the German Autobahn. Actually the first Autobahn (todays A555 between Cologne and Bonn) was built between 1928 and 1932 and got inaugurated by Konrad Adenauer (Major of Cologne and later the first chancellor of the Bundesrepublik) shortly after Hitler became chancellor. He later degraded this road to a lesser state because Adenauer was a political opponent and Hitler wanted to be Mr. Autobahn for the public.

@@Pascal_Mueller Im so glad that German has not turned into a Roman hybrid like French or English...(Spanish?-Latin). Many resent the Germans when finding out that English is in its core a Germanic language which has been Romanised. There are even heavy feuds on the internet regarding that subject haha. But to be very very honest ad historically correct, the Gov & Military Complex of the USA has caused more damage to Germany and its Culture and peoples within 70 years as Rome in 1000 years. USA & Britain can indeed be very proud of conquering the almost un-conquerable Germans in 1917 & 1945, yet, the Germans could only be conquered by its own Brother-Nations and this is the reason why the USA, such as Rome once, keeps a very close eye on Germany to this day (its in the treaty's,meaning,"they" are worried. So in a way,the US-Allied Military Complex is like ancient Rome but they managed something the Romans did not: Sack Germany... so now the language gets "americanized" what we can clearly see on TV,the News,Movies,Music,Art and the kids-youth implement more and more US-American terms,losing their ow slang and their own language with time. - That was nitty gritty. 😀 My mind is on fire. They hadn't lost the war but they got rid of the war supporting monarchy. They - as you like to call them as an entire nation - were driven into the war by contracts between the Austrian and the German aristocrats. The French revanchism was twisting that little difference. And so YOUR claim has been spread by the authorities, After the riots of the German forces against their commanders who never intended to stop this senseless killing in the name of some aristocrats honor the very same authorities took their chances to regain THEIR shitty nationalist honors that has been slapped by the Germans very well two times within a few decades. So however you are absolutely right about many Germans refusing to believe this BS supposing they had lost that war militarily. It was German politics what was willing to sign the unconditional surrender. And if the French had played fair there never would have been a Second World War which you can understand as a continuation of the first one. And how the Second World War was going for France militarily underlines that. It was the third slap. I think the Germans know their history way better than outsiders like you ever will. And yes, authorities always have twisted history to their favor. But truth always prevails - just a matter of time. By time distance and the exchange of several authoritarian eras the science of history keeps up its interests in order to learn from history instead of twisting history in favor of legitimizing the established authorities. So in the end EVERYONE had lost the first world war as well as every damn war. Except those who made money with it there isn't any winner in wars. In that way I agree with Germans having lost that war but then don't forget all others who were participating.

The "Teutonic Knights" also called "The Teutonic Order" was the foreign (english) alternative term for the "Deutscher Ritterorden" = "German Crusaders" of the 3rd Crusade 1187-1192 AD. Those Knights were basically the German version of the "Knights Templars" founded by some German Crusaders in 1192 in Acre/Israel and after the 3rd Crusade back in Europe they cultivated the basically no-mansland/swampland in north eastern Europe = "Baltic Sea shores" and founded there the city "Königsberg" which is since the end of WW2 today the Russian Enclave "Kaliningrad" which is located between Poland and Lithuania outside of Russia and back then from there = "Königsberg" they christianized Lithuania ...and back then that former swampland became "Knight Order Realm" which are today parts of Poland and Lithuania and although that region were run by the "Deutscher Ritterorden/German Knights Order/run by Germans" that land was fully autonomous meaning the Holy Roman Empire/The German Emperor had there no jurisdiction at all because it was solely ruled by the Knights Order from the 12th century till the early 16th century. And that region became then later part of Eastern Prussia after the Knights Order got disempowered by the German Emperor Maximilian I. and his allies the Polish-Lithuanian King Sigismund I. which was a violent process from 1515-1525 with many battles between the Knights Order and the Polish-Lithuanian King who had the silent support from the German Emperor because of a marriage alliance between those 2 because Maximilian´s daughter became Sigismund´s son´s wife in order to become Queen of Poland-Lithuania .. Very simplified long story short. Therefore the Teutonic Knights had nothing to do with the "Battle of Teuteburg Forest" of 9 AD at all ...there are over 1100 - 1500 years inbetween...and from a geographical point of view the Teuteburg Forest is in the middle of Germany and the Teutonic Knights solely operated in the Baltic Sea region.

Pagan Prussia wasnt an uncultivated swampland, though there were many woods and swamps. Prussia had already 2000 years of trade relations before the Teutonic knights appeared. @@rudolfkraffzick642 The Trade you are speaking of was predominately trade of fur and amber and also wood predominately in exchange for agrar products..those are no signs of a "cultivated region" but clearly signs of "Wilderness/boondocks" Because under "cultivated land" I understand "agrar land/farmland" and the Teutonic Order transfered that region into agrar land by draining those swamps and by clearing the boondocks = that process is called "grain CULTIVATION" by the way - and in order to establish lifestock farming as well and that was then the core of their gained wealth. And that was also the reason why the King of Poland-Lithuania had then an eye of that region because the region became a wealthy region with all that farmland and pastures.. So therefore the Teutonic Order in fact "cultivated" that region. It seems you mixed up "culture" with "cultivating". Because "Yes" there was already "a culture" before the Teutonic Order arrived which you then described in your comment..a "Pagan Culture" but that wasn´t topic of my comment at all.

"Teutonic" actually is the latinized word for "German". It comes actually from the same root as the German word for "German", so "deutsch". Both, "Teutonic" and "Deutsch" come from the Old-High-German word "thiutisk" which would be translated as "belonging to the people (Volk)". So "Teutonic Order" in German just would be "Deutscher Orden". So in that context one does actually translate "Teutonic" simply as "German". The name "Teutoburger Wald" was introduced by a monk in the middle ages and he translated the Latin name for this forests "teutoburgiensis saltus" he read in old Roman text back into German and made it know under the new name in remembrance of the "Varusschlacht". So that's the only thing that the Teutoburger Forest and the Teutonic Order have in common: They are both German.
@dexchaos9222
@dexchaos9222 2 жыл бұрын
I actually forgot some stuff: There is a specific German word for "teutonic" which is "teutonisch". It's mostly used in historical contexts especially in names that are based on the Romans. There was for example something the Romans called "furor teutonicus" which would translate to "teutonic frenzy" and in German "teutonische Raserei". Here "teutonic" is translated as "teutonisch" to preserve the original historical connotation. The furor teutonicus was what the Roman called the state of mind that Germanic warriors where often in during battle. They used different psychoactive substances like belladonna to get into a state of mind where they have a reduced perception of fear and pain, similar to modern day gangs who use Ketamin for example before a gang fight, so they don't react to pain.

In school 1985 they had represented the same theory but coming from the latin word "deot" which underlines your claim latinization, but there also has been a German tribe lived at Jütland, Denmark called Thy which might have provided the ancient greek and latin name Τεύτονες (Teutons/Teutoni) ... so in general both theories can be called latinization or generalizing all German tribes by one word. The question remains which theory provides the true root within the latin language. Was it the Thy from Jütland or did it come up later from the Holy Roman Empire? As far as I know the ancient romans called the northern pagans simple Germans but not Teutones. Otherwise they wouldn't have named their guy Germanicus but Teutonicus. However the latin word deot means "god" and might have referred to the meaning "people of god" or "people belonging to god" or simply "god's (people)" considering the christianization and establishment of the Holy Roman Empire of German nation" ... but nevertheless they thought us also "people" as meaning of the latin name. But the Romans called them Germans Germans for sure. And MAY BE both theories have unified and mixed into the very same resulting word "Deutsch" ... I thing nobody knows for sure ...

About the church and government thingy: even many nobles could not read or write in the beginning. Mostly monks wrote books and read and so on and people obviously heavily relied on them. And they could basically say a lot of stuff without anyone being able to double-check. The church was well aware of how much power that brought. Peasants were only allowed to look at the bible when it was brought into the church and the cover of the really fancy ones was adorned with gold, gems and carvings of ivory. And the peasants were supposed to think "Woah, this has to be holy!" because it gleamed and sparkled and was fancy af *cough* anyway. When the nobles learned how to read and write and take the power from the church, that was when all the conflict really happened. It was always a tug-of-war between nobles/government and the church :)

That nobles couldn't read and write is a mostly debunked myth for later medieval times and the renaissance era. It's mostly true for the years 500-900/1000 AD after that reading of noble class picked up. Even normal people could read depending on wealth and region. Todays history scholars estimate a literacy rate between 10-15% for Western and Middle Europe, not much by todays standards but way more than the 3-5% of earlier estimates. Btw many of the false information which even made it into science are based on the romanticism view of the medieval era.

@@jassidoe well peasants is a broad term. But yeah some peasants were able to read and write. There a books about farming, cooking and there like from the (I think) 12th century onwards. Somebody had to read them and this were no occupations for the nobility, so its more likely that land-owning peasants could. Also not every book was that expensive, if it were just written without pictures and caligraphy and you had some money you could buy it. Also with increasing urbanisation rate during the high middle ages (1000 - 1250) increased the number of townsfolk, which had a higher literacy rate. The medieval period is such a long time, that you just can't generalize it.

In June 1914, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary (Archduke Franz Ferdinand) and his wife (Sophie Chotek) visited the city of Sarajevo. On June 28, 1914, the two of them were assassinated. This was carried out by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian nationalist movement Mlada Bosna. The Archduke and his wife died in this attack. Germany promised loyalty to the alliance. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on the Serbs, whereupon Russia also entered the war. On August 1, the German Reich declared war on Russia and on August 4, France as well. In the end, we were the bad guys. We did the same after 9/11 in New York terrorists attacked the USA with airplanes. Something I have to say to the Bismarck Era. His actual goal was to exclude France from the other european countries and surround it with german allies. Therefore he made Deales and traded with GB, Russia, Italy. In Case of a war with France these countries would have supported Germany. But Wilhelm II. Insulted Britain and by starting colonies, also he stopped Germanys Deals with Russia and Italy. So he achieved to isolate Germany and Austria Hungary and surround the with French allies.

The ottomans feared the modern book print so much that they ordered a import Bann for several decades. Armenians learned the printing press business in Italy and opened a printing house in Istanbul in 1567, followed by the first Greek printing house in 1627. The very first thing that the Greek printing house printed was a booklet targeting the Jews cause their understanding of the world was quite the opposite. Sultan Murad III signed a firman, an official decree, in 1587 allowing the sale of the books in Arabic, Farsi and Turkish, which were published in Europe, on Ottoman soil.

Barbarian was a term given by the Romans. It literally meant 'bearded folk' or 'bearded men'. In ancient Rome it was considered a sign of civilization to shave your beard regularly, or even be clean-shaven, and have your hair clipped fairly short. Most Germanic tribes at that time considered beards to be a status symbol of manlihood. Dito for long, flowing manes of hair. To shave your beard and cut your hair short was considered similar to cutting the testicles off a man. Add to that a totally different set of gods they believed in, including human sacrifice in some limited cases. You can imagine that the Romans saw those folk as the epitome of uncivilized, uncouth, dirty, bloodthirsty. That transferred over the millenia into the term 'barbarian' of today, with all its conotations. Calling someone a 'bearded man' was meant as (somewhat) derogatory. BTW: guess where the word 'barber' comes from? Yepp, latin, means a person that clips or shaves a beard or hair. The Romans were pretty ruthless when it came to exterminating the cultural heritage of people they conquered. Whenever somebody submitted to their military power, their culture was subsumed and eliminated by the Roman culture. The ancient Roman empire was huge, reaching from the British Isles to what is today Israel, including several northern African nations. But the lands north of the Alps were a challenge for them, as the transport of troops to that area was fraught with danger during most of the fall and winter, because a) land travel took very long around the Alps, and getting through the Alps was considered nearly impossible, and b) sea travel was also limited due to the very rough seas in the North Sea. So sending reinforcements was difficult for the otherwise highly disciplined and mobile Roman legions. So their loss of three whole legions at the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD was a devastating blow to their military power. Some historians even consider it a turning point for their final decline and fall. To put that into comparison, that defeat was similar to Germany loosing their 6th Army at Stalingrad, but only increased by the power of three, because you could equate the fighting power of one Legion to one army unit in modern times. So they lost three whole armies (plus a bit). The Teutons were one tribe of the many different germanic tribes that inhabited that region which is considered Germany today (plus quite a bit over the borders, but let's not go there). The Teutonic Knights, the Deutschritter Orden, came a LOT later after that Roman defeat at the Teutoburger Forest. But they were connected to those tribes that had been Christianized over the centuries. The Teutonen (again a Latin translation of the Germanic word for themselves = Teutsch) / Deutschen were the basis of why it is called Deutschland, not Germania, or something similar. Because Magna Germania (greater Germany) was the ancient Roman (Latin) name for those lands, not what the people inhabiting it called it. BTW: Germania is the name Hitler wanted to bestow to a completely torn down and rebuilt Berlin after his ultimate victory. It was supposed to be the central capitol of the huge, world spanning Deutsches Reich with insanely megalomaniac sized buildings. Lucky that didn't happen, huh? Guess why that name is NOT that well like in Germany? Yepp, the Goths were separated into quite a few tribes as well. They were part of the reason for the fall of Rome. Gutenberg took a concept already known (printing with wood cuts) and changed it to moveable (and reusable) letters. That's his greatest achievement. He made reading with the fairly simple Latin alphabet a common skill, not something available only to highly educated nobles or monks who did not have to work their butts off every day from dawn till dusk just to survive. This spread education throughout the lands, making advances in technology much more common. The Chinese had invented printing a long time before that but their difficult written language made using reusable letters inviable. The simple Latin alphabet made it much easier to use a small set of letters to create all the words required, instead of individually cut specific pictograms numbering in the ten-thousands in the Mandarin language.

The term originates from the Greek: βάρβαρος (barbaros pl. βάρβαροι barbaroi). In Ancient Greece, the Greeks used the term not only towards those who did not speak Greek and follow classical Greek customs. The romans then used this word. It's litterally a word made from the sound "non greek speaking" people sounded for greeks (The cannot speak they only made this funny bar bar bar bar sounds). 7:55 Actually it was the invention of a printing press with movable letters. Without that Luther's Bible would never have been spread over all of Germany, and the reformation would have failed. The Habsburg dynasty would still rule over the whole of Europe (if they stopped inbreding in time) and the US of A would simply not exist. 10:20 Yes, Prussia was the first Protestant state by a peace treaty between the last Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and his uncle, the King of Poland. The Grand Master dissolved the Order, was appointed as Duke of Prussia by his uncle and appointed his former knights as his fiefs in his new Duchy (to do this he and his men had to adopt Lutheran faith, however), and the Catholic King of Poland allowed him to make Prussia a protestant state within Catholic Poland in 1525. The parts of the Teutonic Order still within the borders of the Holy Roman Empire, however, were divided; some of them kept the Catholic faith; this remainder of the Order was then adopted by the Habsburg dynasty as loyal followers (and administrators for Imperial estates).

I am currently working on two publications. One by Hans Krahe, in which he approached the thesis of the Urgermanic language about the old European names of rivers and lakes, grave finds and in antithesis to the substratum hypothesis Wolfram Euler "Language and Origin of the Germanic Peoples - Abriss des Protogermanischen before the First sound shift. (2009) In it, Euler also examines the origins of the germanic tribes and also deals with the question of whether the bearers of the northern subgroup of the Aunjetitz culture (Nebra sky disk 1600 b.c) and the bearers of the Jastorf culture and the Lausitz culture spoke primitive Germanic idioms. From his publication it can be seen that the research on the Germanic peoples is far from finished.

About your comment about the castle it is the „Marienburg“ it is the biggest castle in Europe and it is still in a high part intact (just around 1/3 is not longer there) it’s in Poland now and was the maincsstle of the Teutonic Knights in „east preussen“ and was complete build with bricks because there are now stones around it. There are many fastinatic information videos about it and you can „visit“ it with google street view and look around in the buildings.

6:59 That is the Marienburg. It was the administrative center of the Teutonic Order (or the Deutsche Orden) in Prussia, which was then part of Poland and is now again. Prussia was first a territory, than a duchy within the Kingdom of Poland and became independent by Swedish intervention in 1657.

gutenberg didn't invent the printing press, but he improved it with exchangeable letters cast out of led... Before that, each page had to pe carved out of wood before printing...

The "Varusschlacht" (Varus' battle) in the Teutoburger Forrest was in 9 A.D. were the Roman commander Publius Quinctilius Varus lost 3 Legions against a German tribe commander called Arminius. A Legion consists of 3000-6000 footsoldiers and a cavalery of 120 riders. So about 18.500 Romans died in a single battle against a tiny german tribe in a forrest. The Teutonic knights were in the year 1099 A.D. the german special forces of the Emperor at that time to lead the cruscades.
