Good video. The type XXI U-boat was actually produced in substantial numbers. 1,000 were ordered, 267 were in the process of being built and 118 were actually completed. There were numerous problems and delays and the 2 that were launched left port in late April 1945. Had they started launching a year earlier they would have been a game changer for the war in the Atlantic. Instead it was too little too late just like all or the other Winder Waffle

Of all these weapons only the new U-BOOT could've been a danger for the allies, but don't forget that they had am Absolute air superiority, better radar/sonars, plus they knew were enemies' bases were, so the outcome couldn't be different
@iansneddon2956
@iansneddon2956 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly - Germany was losing in science/technology. And convoys had their own air cover later in the war. Fairey Swordfish armed with rockets or depth charges patrolling for u-boats. But the video omitted that the early experiments in midget submarines led to the more effective Seehund. A short range and slow submarine with just two torpedoes it was (1) so quiet on electrical power that it was hard to hear on hydrophones, (2) so small it was very tricky to get a fix on it with active sonar, and (3) its small size reduced the stress experienced from depth charge explosions. A depth charge had to go off within about 10 m of the Seehund to incapacitate it. These could have been deadly on D-Day if they were available - but they did not enter service until later in 1944 and never in large enough numbers to make a difference.

@iansneddon2956 3 жыл бұрын
@@alessiodecarolis By D-Day the Battle of the Atlantic had long been over, but the midget submarines could have done a lot of damage if they could have been deployed in numbers against the invasion/resupply fleet in June 1944. But they did not go into production until after the landings. These weapons suffered, as many German weapons did, from being pushed into service quickly without fully training crews and working out how to effectively use the submarines. Orders were placed for a thousand Seehund midget submarines, but ultimately only 138 saw service. These were not effective in combat in rough weather and their range was very short. Even conserving fuel, the quarters on a 17 ton submarine are very tight. Unsuited as an offensive weapon without some larger tender. But craft like the Seehunds were suited as coastal defense submarines. They were carrying out successful operations in 1945 from German ports going against shipping in the Channel. They would have been more effective if they could have been operating from French ports nearer their targets, or even Antwerp. But by the time the Seehunds were being effectively deployed Antwerp was in Allied hands.

Also worth to mention are the projects following the "Neger", what let to 1/3 loss for example at the "Biber" - Minisubs, and just read this morning about "Schulungskommando Elbe" from Luftwaffe, what planned and once launched kamikaze attacks against allied bombers by ramming the planes out of the sky. The pilot should jump out of the plane, land by parashute and start with a new plane. Due to lack of planes, fuel and pilots making it back in one peace, this unit only stuck once. Later there where some real kamikaze missions where the pilots rammer planes loaded with explosions into bridges to stop the soviet army.

What about the Me163 Komet? It was a pure, unadulterated crazy idea: a glider with a pair of MK108 30mm cannons with a rocket motor in the back that's burning a hypergolic mixture of propellants (methanol+hydrazine hydrate fuel and 80% hydrogen peroxide solution oxidiser). The propellants are so toxic that the ground crew were supposed to wear chemical resistant protective clothing and breathing equipment. On top of that, if the fuel comes into contact with the oxidiser, it reacts with such vigour and energy that its an explosion. Even residual fuel and oxidiser in the engine after flameout is enough to utterly destroy the Komet if it sloshes together on landing. If my memory serves, more Komets were lost due to ground handling accidents, landings and take offs that caused fuel/oxidiser explosions, than were shot down by Allied fire.

If the claims about Mario Zippermayr are true then Germany also tested fuel-air explosives during the war which would have been combined with V-1 missiles as a tactical weapon. This apparently never reached fruition due to technical and material limitations. People talk about the ME-262 and the ME-163 but but both suffered from serious flaws. The ME-262's jet engines had a shelf life of hours but they needed to be fully replaced due to a lack metals such as Chromium , Nickel etc and also required solid concrete runways to operate from which limited them in terms of deployment. They were also introduced far too late into the war in 1944. The ME-163 was also dangerous due to its explosive fuel and had an incredibly limited range-literally requiring it to sit under the bomber streams predicted routes. The V-2 rocket project was also a colossal waste and cost more than the U.S A-bomb project to achieve very little. Those funds would have been better used producing more tanks, aircraft,trucks, radar, working anti-aircraft missiles/proximity fuses, enhanced synthetic fuel/rubber production sites and more STG44 and panzerfausts. Plus having an actual coherent and organised Atomic energy project from the mid-30s might have helped immensely even if a bomb could only be churned out toward the end of the war it would have definitely had an impact somewhere-probably over London as a one way suicide flight.

Wrong. All major countries employ suicide attacks they just don't all call them the same thing. I can't think of a single military that doesn't spout propoganda about how their soldiers are so loyal they will fight to the last man(suicide tactics). They only do it more often and with less lies surrounding it when desperate. These were suicide bombers. Just because they were lied about and just called "dangerous" doesn't mean shit

You should’ve mentioned the ME 163 Komet, which along with the V weapons, killed more people who produced them and used them, than people who they were aimed at, and in the case of the ME 163 Komet, it had a habit of exploding on touchdown, unless every last drop of fuel was used up........ Also, the nazis spent far too much on producing planes at the end of the war, than they did on training pilots, which was why the allied forces, found hundreds or even thousands of unused planes(and spares for planes) littered all over Germany....... This was in part, because they moved their production into hundreds of Forrest plants, which was ok when they had a railway system to move them, out to wherever they were needed........ But even when they didn’t have the railway system, to move the planes, and they didn’t have the pilots to fly them, they carried on producing them, instead of making the things that they really needed........ This goes to show, how tenuous the grip on reality was, for the whole of the nazi party, but especially the leaders.!.!.!.!.!.

If the Type XXI was brought out for the start of the Battle of the Atlantic in sufficient numbers, then things would definitely have gone differently. Same with the StG 44. Forget the V2s, build more Fritz X, Save the remaining Zeppelins for mid Atlantic scouting, attack USSR only after Britain's surrender, etc etc. They still wouldn't have been likely to win but would have achieved more goals, maybe.

So by using literal magic to develop technologies which were still beyond what they could achieve at the time? Why not go further and let the UK have their Sonar in 1940, their new Escorts in 1939 and their Mk14 Spitfires for the Battle of Britain. Or the Soviets their IS-4 for 1941? Or the US a Sheridan for 1935.
