Many english-speaking KZbinrs are reacting to Volker Pispers these days. All in all, not the worst thing to react to, but I have to say it clearly, with my deepest respect. You are one, if not the only one, who completely understands what he is trying to say, even without knowing all the german names and insider stuff. Sarcasm, Irony and Satire is very hard to understand in another language and you nailed it nearly all the time. I love to listen to your reaction about what he is saying. Very Good Job James. 💪 👍

In the US, the understanding of democracy, also inside the USA, is a bit strange, otherwise it would not be possible for the person who gets fewer votes to become president. In addition, only those who are super rich and have super rich supporters and financiers have a chance to win. By the way, the oldest democracy in the world was in Greece and not in the USA! Everything that Volker Pispers says has been well researched and is true!

Instead, we select people to do the vote on behalf of us, which is more often than not abused)

13:40 If you follow news articles, an american drone pilot went to the media: the analyst guy who decided the person on drone footage can be terminated, but afterwards realised was just a kid at the door entrance of his home who got killed, took on the report they eliminated a dog. So even when they would leak documents, nobody would accuse him on his decision making. The drone pilot got yelled at, that he should just shut up, and do his fing job. Surely the drone pilot didn't feel happy about that, so he left the army and went to the media. So you can assume from that, nowadays drone killings won't be documented authentically.

The term "Democracy" describes only a small aspect of a form of government. In a democracy, the people are allowed to participate. But that does not guarantee a satisfying outcome. Elections are held, but often you have no choice between any candidates you agree with completely. The difference between several of the parties with any chance to pass the 5% threshold is negligible, and the other parties are so extreme that they are no wholehearted option. And the party you would prefer will not have a chance to enter the parliament due to the 5% threshold. Or with the words of Volker Pispers from an earlier smaller sketch: "Wir haben zwar immer mal Wahlen, aber nicht immer eine Wahl." (Sometimes we have elections, but not always a choice.)

A mature democracy can be recognized by its electoral laws. In Germany, EVERY citizen is automatically entitled to vote, unlike in the USA, where you have to register first. Anyone who is sentenced to at least one year in prison for a criminal offense in Germany loses the right to vote (to stand as a candidate) for a period of five years, but not the (active) right to vote.
@harz632
@harz632 Жыл бұрын
Only Men have to do that. That same registration forces you to be draft able to the army and the firefighters if they are in need of either. Plus without registration you don't get student loans for studying. Women don't have to do any of that an can just vote when they are 18 as well as get student loans, no strings attached.

@Kelsar1981 Жыл бұрын
While true, also kind of false. Since we got a Meldepflicht (US has nothing like that), which arguably could be seen as registration... and is kind of controversial from a freedom standpoint in itself. IMHO a better argument would be convicts not having a vote.

@@hape3862 technical right, but that was about registration, but did you ever tried to vote, if not registered in any city? I dont think USA is a democracy! Let me explain. If u look at the characteristics of a democracy, u will at least find 2 really important points the USA does not have. 1. Pluralism: It basically means a variety of parties, that represent a great variety of political opinions. And two parties are not a pluralism. Now u could argue, that the US has more than two parties, but since a lot of people just vote for what their parents have been voting their entire lives and not even think, if that is actually a party representing their opinion (which is mostly the demorcrats or the conservatives) the people take away their own pluralism and therefor their democracy. Tbh that isn‘t exactly a problem of the system but it connects to my second point. 2: every vote counts: one of the most important characteristics in a democracy is that every vote counts. The system of the delegates simply makes your vote pointless, if u dont like the two big parties or unless u live in a swing state. Since so many stupid people vote for the conservatives or democrats with closed eyes any different vote is just worthless. I think u could find more arguments, but for now… The problem is, that when the US became the most powerful country after WW1 they were at the top and they knew it. And why would u go further if u are the best. Ever since the US just stopped evolving, resulting in an old, broken political system. for example in the past the idea with the delegates was useful, because it was impossible to have a direct election, because of slow communication and travel possibilities at the time this system got introduced. And now the US is a world power with an obsolete political system and for some reason, the people there dont realise what is wrong but instead start chanting USA USA in a country, where so many people get killed every day due to their outdated gunlaws etc. Just wanted to say, there are so many positive things about the US, but those problems are just bigger and more affecting the rest of the world, considering i feared for my live when i heard, that the brainless animal Trump became president and was able to press the button just for fun. Thx for reading. Write ur answer, i can take criticism :)

When it comes to pushing Democracy, you have to remember Iran and Mohammad Mosaddegh. He was the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 to 1953. You may remember how the Allied Forces after WW2 promised that they would give back their colonies and Mosaddegh took them by their word and wanted to give the Iranian people the oil fields back that the Brits had taken. After Mosaddegh nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company to shut out foreign control, the US, specifically the CIA, staged a coup against the Iranian government - paid off criminal cartels and the like to create uprisings - and then installed a dictator - Reza Pahlavi - as the leader of Iran. It was called Operation Ajax. And to be clear, Mosaddegh was very popular with the Iranian people, just not with the US. Reza Pahlavi, on the other hand, had very good relationships with the US, just not with the Iranian people. In good dictatorial fashion, hesuppressed the Iranian people so much that they finally revolted and he himself was peacefully overthrown in 1979 which resulted in the current theocratic government. Volker Pispers also has a bit on that and points out how desperate the Iranian people must have been to get rid of Pahlavi that they supported a religious leader, Ruhollah Khomeini, instead. The German satire show "Die Anstalt" summarized the US-involvement in the Middle East quite nicely here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4Pde4afiKx_r5o

ok so 1) America is not actually a democracy its a democratic republic. Small but very impactfull difference. Basicly instead of voting on laws directly or electing people who make them you vote on people who then put people in charge who make the rules. And in the electorate you actually vote for people who then vote for the person who puts people in charge of actully doing things 2) representative democracy doesnt mean the people get to actually demand or change law you just elect your dictator who then makes the rules for you and chooses the people he works with. Main difference to actual dicatorship is that the term is limited by time. 3) the issue with democracy is that a) most people are too uneducated or idiotic to vote for policy rather than personality corrupting the system from start b) the burocratic state makes sure that no one can actually change things easily which makes 4 year terms very ineffective c) the politicians get votes by emotionally manipulating voters, not actually having good ideas d) actual democracy woudlnt work either cause most people vote selfishly and society wouldnt work if say eveyone votes to not pay taxes. e) most people vote against their own interests because they trust some guy who just wants their vote and not actually whats best for them

When you only have 2 parties to choose from, then democracy is already very limited. Then we have the 2 major problems democracies suffer from all over the world: first, there should be a field in the voting ballot that allows voter to say "non of the f*ck*rs" and it should be counted. If there ar enough voices voting this way, the candidates should be scrapped and new ones proposed. And second: we should change our view of the government being like the nobles/kings before: the top power that can do what it wants. In a proper democracy, they are the servants of the country, ie. the people. So they owe a justification for every decision and spending. There should be a public accounting every year for what taxes are used for, and a listing of decisions taken and their justification. And if politicians commit mistakes, they should be held accountable for them. Them getting a high pension for a few years work should also be scrapped.

Wait you are chasing 500.000 subs? Im terrified and in awe at the same time! PS: Lets be real, voting dosent really matter anymore. Either cause no party would ACT in the voters interest or cause they really cant (there are a lot of agreements we dont know about and that cant be broken, without causing massive international upheavel). Makes my kinda sad, but democracy died here some time ago!

I know this video is almost two months old, however one thing. As far as I have seen it in the last 80 years America didn't push democracy, but capitalism, now whether you like capitalism or not is not the issue here. The problem is that for american foreign policy it seems like it doesn't matter whether the regime created is democratic or not only that it works on capitalist principles, so that america can easily trade with them. Look for instance at what happened with russia after the fall of the soviet union, the goal was not to create a democracy cause none of the presidents there were ever democratic, the goal was simply creating a capitalist system to trade with in the future, which didn't really work out, but shock therapy is a thing and it is often the main thing that american foreign policy does to "liberated" countries.

I don´t know if it gets better when it changes, but i know that is has to change to get better. Democracy/Capitalism is not perfect but we haven´t tryied a different social construct yet that is possibly better.

Democracy isnt good, Democracy leads to chaos because the mob decide laws and give special rights to minorites and all kind of groups. Republic is good, in a Republic everyone has to follow the constitution, no special rights for small/"special" groups. Democracy is also just one step away from dictatorship and civil war. Plato talked about a cycle that a state is going through, it starts always in a ... Republic (laws govern) Democracy (mob rule and change laws they dont like) Oligarchy (rich rules and the rest has nothing) Tyranny (dictator takes over) Civil war (starting again in a Republic) You see this cycle over and over, he wrote a book about it "Platos State (thats the German title but I dont know how its called in English, I think it has a different name)".

Some people is the east say democracy doesn't work because in the current economical model, the profit is always short term dominant. When you choose a goverment who will be in power 4 or 8 years, many of their decisions is short term and may hurt the people of the country in the long term, but they doesn't really care. That's why some people value more long term planned decision in some eastern countries. And btw in todays world democracy doesn't exist, yes you can vote to "say" who will be in the government, but who really "vote" is the big capital with their finantial decisions in form of inversions. So in reality not every "vote" count the same. And with the resources of the world expiring (you can investigate about oil for example), the manufactured goods and raw materials will be more important than the services, or atleast same importance, so the world will change a lot in the next 30 years I think.

*Thanks for this! You nailed it again!* There's a lot of reaction videos trying to explain the meaning of what Pispers is saying. This isn't easy to do for a non native listener with all the black humor, sarcasm and historical background he uses. He definately woke up many people to see things right, including myself. I think what Pispers did was not just classy "satire", this was truth in satire's clothing. OK, the audience obviously was laughing (to hide their frightened disenchantment?), but the laughters got stuck in their throats, at the latest after the show, as many of my friends told me. Let me close by saying Pispers wasn't anti-american-minded, he accused everything and everyone goin' wrong from his point of view. Greatings from germany

tbh? I can't remember any instant in which the US spread democracy to another country. You could maybe argue west germany but thats about it. There are however many dictatorships that were caused directly by the US. Look at chile, the entire middle east and multiple african countries. If there are any countries that the US actually spread democracy to and i may have forgotten about (which might have happened), i'd be glad to hear them.

3:40 from a european perspective, the US seems not that different to be honest. While we also have parties that align with christian values (german CDU/CSU for example), watching US politics being discussed as who's more christian and the right kind of christian aswell, on top of swearing an oath on the bible (although you can choose other books afaik) seems just as out of touch to many of us

James don't tell such rubbish, America didn't bring democracy into the world! Democracy means: The form of government in which an elected representative body exercises political power, the principle of allowing decisions to be made by the majority! Ancient Greek, δημοκρατία dēmokratía 'popular rule! And for your information: In North America, the Native Americans were the first to have a democracy and then the Vikings arrived in North America, who in turn came from Europe. James, do you see something there? Something in your information is probably wrong!
