Another semi-tedious docu told exclusively from the German viewpoint, one of maybe 1,000, without a single Polish source or historian in a country where English is rapidly becoming the second language so could have been found.

In the last millenium the city of Gdańsk was associated with Polish state for 670 years, than teutonic mercenaries and shortly with Prussia. Became forcefully germanised within short period of the Prussian occupation of the 19 century.

This film is grossly inaccurate in the sense that it doesn’t mention the pre-arranged with Germany Soviet offensive against Poland of September 17. That offensive hit the Polish army’s rear where the Poles were trying to mobilize reserves and regroup. After Poland’s rear was attacked and the eastern part of Poland was occupied by USSR further resistance against both Germany and USSR was impossible. Thus Poland had to capitulate. But the film didn’t mention this and this is how it totally distorted the history of the war. In a sense it was retelling the old story of the German propaganda which claimed that the far superior Wehrmacht easily defeated Poland. Well, it did, but without the Soviet help it would not be possible. In reality Poland in September 1939 fought a war against two, NOT ONE, powerful enemies: Germany and USSR and without allied help the outcome could only be what it was.

Only Germany had military power that time because they did not respect the Treaty of Versaile and kept a much too large army, which was against the treaty. Additionally, the countries who imposed restrictions on Germany after the First World War didn't interfere when Germany was building their military power (tanks, planes, etcetera), and when they annexed Austria and took over Czechoslovakia. What is missing in this video is the resistance and fight of Polish soldiers, especially in September 1939. You made it sound like it was so easy to take it over. I have read quite a few sources in my life, and I have learned that the Germans didn't expect to sustain so many losses (both in machinery and people) and thought it would have been easier to take over Poland. Hence, the attack on France was later than intended. It was not Poland who established the rules and conditions in the Versaile. So, the main issues and "bad blood" went to the countries that humiliated Germany. Gdańsk (Danzing) was established by Polish kings, and its Partion in 1793 to Prussia (and later becoming a part of Germany) does not make it German. Polish people during the partitions mostly lived in the countryside, and only a small percentage lived in the cities. They couldn't speak Polish, forced to hide their traditions, and many were treated dreadfully even during those times. There were many Germans living in Poland after WWI. Good excuse to invade. Sounds familiar even now in the XXI century in the neighbouring Polish country!

Overall very good work! Obviously there a lot of is missing like the fact that majority of losses on GER side were inflicted after Soviets invaded for example during the second largest battle of the campaign at Tomaszów Lubelski in 3rd, 4th and 5th week of the war. Still I'd only add two important facts: 1. France and UK were not ready to give Poland support. GER army at that time was stronger than what France, Uk and Poland could use because The Third Reich mantained a very large army without a need of mobilisation. There was very little FRA and UK could do in 1939 and German forces in the west were actually pretty strong. 2. Poland sadly had to try to defend even remote territories which couldn't be defended proparly. The spectre of another Munich or Germany claiming 'the end of hostilities' after capturing key cities was very real. This is quite similar to what Ukraine has to do now facing invading Russia.

@tysquirt1112 ай бұрын
Russia got a pass because they were largely responsible for the fall of Germany. The USSR was never going to face a military tribunal for war crimes. Either they would be executed by the Nazis, or they would win the war and ignore their own war crimes. We know that Russia ultimately beat the Germans, and thus didn't face war crimes. The allies were fully aware of the crimes of the USSR, but refused to even acknowledge them to ensure post-war treaties were ratified. So TL;DR they got away with it because the victors were never going to charge themselves with war crimes.

@@tysquirt111 I meant why they got a pass for invading Poland. But I've since learned they were "protecting" Poland from Germany's invasion.
@tysquirt1112 ай бұрын
@@onepcwhiz6847 Britain was unwilling to declare war on the USSR for the invasion of Poland. Churchill claimed that they only promised them protection from Germany, but the reality was that they didn't want war with the USSR and knew that eventually the USSR and Germany would fight each other. When the war ended, the USSR claimed that the massacre of the Polish Intelligence was done by the Germans (which was true in some cases, but not in the parts of Western Poland where the mass graves were found). Since none of the victorious nations would be tried in a war tribunal, the USSR swept their atrocities in Poland under the rug by blaming the Germans for them.
