The Eschede ICE disaster is still the worst train accident in Germany. On June 3, 1998, the ICE 884 derailed here, killing 101 people. 105 people were injured, some seriously. Pastor Maximilian is a resident of the city and follows the traces of the catastrophe. What remains 25 years later? The people of Eschede, who were the helpers at the time, still remember the day that changed the place forever. At that time, Katrin Marwede looked after children who had had an accident. Joachim Gries, the newspaper journalist, was one of the first helpers on site. The then municipal fire chief Rolf Pundschus drove over the fateful bridge just a few minutes before the accident. Firefighter Ulf Heinemann explains that it is a miracle that there was forced grounding and that the first responders were not electrocuted. Photographer Hildegard Marwede remembers the dead silence in town. Klaus Drögemüller explains why the memorial is still an important place for victims and helpers today.
The survivor Udo Bauch also talks about the day, which divides his life into "before" and "after". How he manages to live with his physical and psychological consequences, that he is still disappointed with the track, but also that he is happy to have been given a second life.
