Another very interesting video Richard,many thanks for posting this and all the others,I never get tired of watching them,brings back memories of my three trips to SA back in 1976,1980 and 1985.Sadly,never to be repeated unless,of course,I could get to Sandstone but I m not holding my breath!.Best Wishes,Alan.

I much prefered the hand shovel locos so long as you had a good driver. Out on the main it was hard work but on the mountains around Mossel Bay on the garratts it was much easier to hand fire up the passes than on the main because the piston speeds was much slower which made it easier to maintain steam. Then again, my old driver always said "all steam trains have a mechanical stoker, only difference is that some of them can talk" ;-)

Nice firing technique. Did you prefer the challenge of hand firing or the ease of mechanical stoker?
