I first started listening to Mulligan in 1954 when he and Chet Baker were in a piano-less quartet for Pacific Jazz. In 1996 when I was living near Cleveland he was scheduled to play there and I was looking forward to hearing him. He died that year. I have over 50 CDs of Gerry plus memories of concerts at Shorewood High School/a Milwaukee suburb, the Modern Jazz Room in Chicago and the Kenosha High auditorium with Dave Brubeck. His performance here with Billy Hart, Frank Luther and Harold Danko equals the brilliance I remember from all that I have heard with Zoot, Bob Brookmeyer, Getz, Art Farmer et al.

I remember when this was broadcast on PBS. It was simulcast in my hometown on the local NPR station, and I made a cassette recording of the audio. I'm really glad to have found this upload; I haven't _seen_ it in close to 40 years, but I listened to that tape I made enough that I was still able to sing along with some of the solos. As I recall, this was part of a series called "Jazz in America" (you can see the logo near the beginning of the video); there was an episode featuring Dizzy Gillespie, and I think maybe one with Phil Woods. Maybe I'll go hunt for them on KZbin...

He did that rarely. He plays soprano saxophone on his The Age of Steam album.
