This silver bird takes me 'cross the sky. Just one more hour, and I'll be home and dry. 'Cross the ocean, Way above the clouds, I come stealin'. Feelin' tired, but I feel good, ‘Cause I did everything I said I would. I think of you, And I know how you'll be feelin'. I gotta see you. I gotta be with you. We'll make it better, now, in every way. It's gotta be you. It's gotta be you. Yes. From now on, I'll tell you every day. Way up here, above this timeless sea, I realize just what it is you mean to me. You gave me somethin', when I thought That everything we had was dyin'. I needed reason just to make me carry on. Well, I know better, now. I know where I belong. I can't imagine how I ever let myself Just give up tryin'. I gotta see you. I gotta be with you. We'll make it better, now, in every way. It's gotta be you. It's gotta be you. Yes. From now on, I'll tell you every day. Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh. Ooh-ooh, Ooh-ooh. Ooh, ooh-ooh. Yes. Home and dry. Ain't nothin' up here Gonna slow me down. You know, I never, ever Take the long way 'round. I think of you, ‘Cause I know how you'll be feelin'. This silver bird takes me 'cross the sky. Just one more hour, and I'll be home and dry. 'Cross the ocean, way above the clouds, I come stealin'. I gotta see you. I gotta be with you. We'll make it better, now, in every way. I bought Gerry Rafferty's Greatest Hits CD and wore a groove in this song "Home and Dry" along with "Baker Street" and "Right Down The Line." My buddies who were Black chided me: "Man what you doing liking music like this?" Snapped back: "What do you mean music like this?" Then I continued: "You guys need to educate yourself about the music world; great music is great music regardless of the color of the person singing it." They never bothered me again about the music I listened to. When I was stationed at Naval Air Station Alameda in the mid 1980s, I went to a Karaoke Bar with three Sailor buddies of mine who were White. I didn't drink alcohol so I was their Designated Driver. We got to the Bar and they dared me to get up in stage and sing a song. I took the challenge as the good number of people in the Bar clapped as I went up on stage. I know they probably thought I was going to ask for an R&B or Motown song to be cued up but when I selected "Baker Street" you could have heard a Rat pissing on cotton throughout the Bar! I cued up the song and began to belt out the lyrics. When I finished, the crowd broke their silence by giving me a standing ovation!

The amazing talent of Gerry Rafferty really shines in this epic piece. Serving as a soundtrack for my escapades in the day City to City - Night Owl - Snakes & Ladders was always in my tape player. More importantly, to me at least, when I return from deployment - sortie - or (now days) a particularly difficult or dangerous run THIS is the song that plays in my head. I should have died a long time ago, all the stuff I've done but this time I returned from deployment on hurricane relief efforts... alive... Home and Dry..

I totally agree with you Greg! For some reason he flew under the radar. If you say his name to most people, they don't know who he is until you say "stuck in the middle with you".
@williamjones62768 жыл бұрын
+Jason H Sure and that's only because he was the front man for Stealer's Wheel but NOBODY can stand next to Gerry Rafferty when you hear "Baker Street" or "Right Down The Line" in addition to "Home And Dry."
@bookguitarguy8 жыл бұрын
+Greg Angel Maybe he didn't sell his soul to the "right people" or compromise his integrity like a lot of other musicians did? That's often the case with those who "don't make it", but they deserve more respect in the long run. Then again I'm speculating, as I don't know the details of his career, but his talent is much greater than a lot of singers who are world famous-and half of them (divas and pretty boys) don't even write their own material!!
@AlanRafferty7 жыл бұрын
bookguitarguy Gerry did it his way. Refused to tour The States, refused to play the music industry game, and sold around 15 million records whilst trying his damndest not to. Two pop classics in Baker St and Stuck In The Middle With You...I think it's fair to say he made it. But he didn't enjoy the fame it brought...
@donnaphilben63257 жыл бұрын
Maybe Gerry didn't tour or actively seek fame and fortune because he just enjoyed making the music, but he didn't want to be "mobbed" or have his picture taken every time he stepped outside of his house, or go out to dinner with family, etc.

Just pure brilliant how Gerry Rafferty materialized his stuff and melded this song together in one piece hit, and as a fan of this kind of music, you know you're listening to a masterpiece.
