Windsor McKay traveled with this film and put on a show speaking to Gertie. Giving the instructions verbal in the theater, pretending to interact with the cartoon. People loved it

Mccay may have been influenced by the art of T.S. Sullivant, several of his prehistoric-setting drawings feature a similar to Gertie dinosaur.

Here you can see where the term "cartoon" comes from. From the Italian cartone or from the French carton, which mean "carboard", where they mede the drawings.

The film was originally used in McCay's vaudeville act, where he interacted with the image on the screen. At the end, he would walk offstage, and reappear onscreen in the animation.
