When moving to Kingsdown, Kent twenty five years ago and investigating the history of the village I discovered that I lived less than 400 metres from where Gertrude Ederle landed. The tide had taken her miles off course from Dover making her swim longer in time and distance. The most surprising thing was that I found that almost nobody in the village had heard of her or her achievements. Subsequently a small memorial has been erected but I believe she is underappreciated still.

There will always be those who like to divide... Gertrude smashed through the gender, class, religious, celebrity (media) et-al statuses that are commonly & routinely used to divide us human beings from one another. We need to celebrate those humans like Gertrude, who dance down the archaic mindsets, who wish to continue that process within society; I think you can guess which (modern day) men (and some women) that need reminding of what an individual can achieve without these constant negatives/stereotypes designed to keep people suppressed.

Feminists should look at this and understand how to ask for equality.

Nah women today turns down chivalry. I've been turned down many times on opening doors for them, asking to help carry stuff when I see them, letting them sit on my chair when they're standing (I got even yelled at when I made the gesture "SIT!").

"Ask" for equality? Are you for real? No woman should need to ask for equality and struggle more than men to get it.
