They do organ concerts every Thursday pm throughout July and August. Recently attended one (because of listening to Gert play here) - it sure is a big organ, 126 ranks and 90 voices spread over several galleries in the front third of the cathedral. The space is immense and the sound comes from all around you. Highly recommend going if you can.

People always comment how gifted Gert van Hoef is - of course, it's true - a wonderful gift. But don't forget the amount of his hard work to reach this level. Hours and hours every day at the keyboard. Years of practice since he was a young boy. You can still see KZbin videos of his dedication as a teenager. Gert has become a great organist because of his total dedication to achieving perfection. A great musician!

_Bouncybon_ is right: without a lot of work, a gift is only a useless mania :) A gift is like potting soil : if you don't develop it it will lead to nothing. _Stanley Kennedy_ - A talented and gifted person is not sufficient to make a genius. Genius are rare. They are able to break their contemporaneaous frame and take their art further. Genius is way greater than talent... I don't think Gert is - for the moment - on this way. This is absolutely not a reproach. I humbly kneel in front of Gert, he is higly gifted, yet young, and he can evolve, but he doesn't seem to want to break the frame. He plays very classically - and is perfect in that. Genius is way greater than talent. At some point, a genius gathers hatred around him because he is too innovative - that is the main feature of a genius. JS Bach (a renowned genius) went once to Lubeck, there he met D. Buxtehude and J. A. Reinckein, and both "knighted" him. But when JS Bach came back to Arnstadt, he was kicked ass - why? because random persons there thought he were too innovative, he was playing too complicated things... a genius is rarely acclaimed in his lifetime. I consider another organist to be a genius, I won't write his full name here because that inevitably leads to tons of hatred (generally with tons of admiration from others). Just his initials : C.C (yes, the young american who plays with strassy clothes and has a ridiculous haircut). Why do I say he is a genius? Because he's both talented AND clearly focused on the future. He broke the whole frame in our little organ world: the way to dress, the way to behave, the way to play, the way to consider his instrument and to glimpse at the future... he is so novative that many, many organ lovers just loudly hate him and his provocative vision. But in ten, maybe twenty years, I bet CC will achieve to lead the organ into the 21st century - where gifted and talented other organists will simply continue to perpetuate the past. This is for me a true genius : the one who kickass his art to take it further, even against the current fashion. _All above is just my vision - absolutely not a peremptory statement nor a definitive law. :)_

I'm in awe of this this music and the chap playing it. It must be like doing 70 on a motorway, landing a plane and knitting yourself a balaclava all at the same time, requiring total focus; yet he seems to play with just instinct and barely a glance at the music. His slender fingers are Tarantula-esque and nimble as they scurry back and forth and up and down keys so that one can't help but be astounded that they seem to know where to go independently of their owner. It makes one wonder how the brain works it all out, yet it does. When I was a boy they used to play this at the end of chapel at my school as we walked out towards breakfast. We had large wonderful pipe organ in a gallery in a tall Victorian Chapel and it reminds of that time.

Absolutely amazing. God has blessed this young man, and his wife, with ability that only comes from God. I have only one of his CD's, and all pieces are amazing. Pipe Organ is my favorite music, and I have a system in my house that takes your breadth away. It is crammed into one small bedroom in my house, and can take your breadth away. Watching Gert on the organ bench is something else. His improvizatons, like his "Pomp and Circumstance in England, are incredible. He seems to play a lot in the Major keys, which I very much like. Picardy really knew what he was doing, with the 3rd transition up a half step. I still do digital recording, but only from home. I make CD master's from DAT masters, to give back to artists to have commercially produced. I also love rich Male Voice music, have directed choirs, Baroque Brass groups, etc. Pipe Organ still sits on top. I will be 71 next week, and still hear like I was young. If anyone has any questions, email me. Wayne Woodhams, Ventura, California 93004. email w.wixman@yahoo.com. Note: I only work on music I can appreciate, but when I do, I've never charged anyone for time, if they supply msiling costs. so I don't have out of pocket costs. Christopher Pertini (past organist at Christal Cathedral, in California), wrote an arrangement of the hymn "Amazing Grace" when he was very young, that just blows you away. It's 3 verses long, and the transition from verse 2 to verse 3, he uses the clarion pipes on the top of the Cathedral (trumpet sounding) that also draws your breadth away, This hymn, written on the Pentatonic scale, as is all beautiful Jewish music, is also great. Blessings to you Gert. You inspire us all. cX

Definitely a masterful performance, with unhurried intensity (especially compared to D Bish's race to the finish). Watching this young man perform is a pleasure.
