I think for we viewers we do not really appreciate fully the legend of Ragnar since we aren't true vikings so we do not connect emotionally to their beliefs and culture. But even as an outsider you have to imagine how big Ragnar must have been truly, A mere farmer to took himself as a farmer to a new world they never dared explore for centuries maybe, conquered this new world, made himself King and even conquered Paris another new world. I bet even some worshipped him as a god among men cause how can this be the works of a mere farmer?

For those who don't get it, this is not honouring Ubbe himself, but his father. Most Scandinavian surnames are just "Son of-", or in even older Scandian languages such as Iceland, they even kept "Daughter of-". So Johansson = Johan's son. Guthildittr = Guthil's daughter. The worth of the person was not of themselves, but their linage, their history, their stories. When you spoke their name it wasn't "their" name, it was all of that persons family through time.

Names like "Smith" (being a smith), or as tons of surnames here in Scandinavia that are just literally forests, mountains, trees, war-objects etc. that people who had never had a lineage (no "son/daughter of") just took as their "surname" once the tax-collectors wanted to keep track of everyone and they didn't want 1560 fuckers named "Olaf" in their documents so everyone had to get a surname.

lol Ubbe, his brothers, and Ragnar are suppose to be Danes. Their war with King Alfred was called the Great Danish Invasnion of 867. The ancient Norse were mostly explorers, although many did raid as well (raiding Scotland and conquering the Faroe Islands), they're more famous for settling Iceland and eventually Vinland. The ancient Norse were awesome, just not for the things the show claims they did, all that was the Danes. Some famous Norweigians: Leif Eriksson, King Harald Fairhair (Finehair in the show), and then born later Harald Hardrata (the most badass viking in history), and King Olaf (one of the first crusader kings, who's raids and army helped pave the way for thr first crusade).

Oh god... he wouldn't be called "Ubbe Loðbrok". Loðbrok means "Saggy-Breeches" and was Ragnar's given name, like Bjorn Ironside. Bjorn's son wouldn't also be called Ironside lol One possible reason for the nickname Loðbrok was because every time he jumps out of a longship into the water, his breeches would get wet. So it's possibly hinting that he raids a lot or is always the first one onto the shore. Its a real shame Ubbe left and sailed to the new world. I really didnt like the whole iceland, greenland, north america story line. I wish Ubbe had stayed and faved the Russ, then following the death of Bjorn ruled Kattegat perhaps even going on that final raid agaisnt alfred.
