@elijahalbiston10 ай бұрын
@@shahkrown See, even that was a strategic move. By doing that Ragnar removed, well, really the worst and most greedy people from Kattegat and never let them have the chance to return. Everything about his death and final voyage was thought out. He had dark moments in every season, 4 most of all, but he was never unworthy of the living, intelligent legend people made him out to be. Even in his worst failures, the settlement and Paris, he took boats up the cliff and showed the people what their future could be. Only the craftiest King in England and his own brother could defeat Ragnar Lothbrok.

The sons came up with anger in their eyes. They had imagined and fantasized exactly how this would go. They would come with rage and Ragnar would cower with them. Ragnar would slink back to Kattegat and apologize profusely. They had imagined it so clearly, they were CONFIDENT Ragnar would come back meek, ashamed and broken. They would be POWERFUL, STRONG, CONFIDENT and BOLD with their father. Their anger would be great! They would stare at him with hate and speak such strong words! They would challenge their father and their father would give up his kingship in submission without a fight, they KNEW IT! They said it many times at the dinner time, "If my father came back, I would run my sword through his gullet. Just let him show his face." When Ragnar showed up, they were ready to face him. Until they saw the defiance in Ragnar. There was no fear in Ragnar and he made it clear he would make no excuse or apology. And he challenged them directly. Lesson learned, boys?

There’s layers to it. They are warriors, they were not afraid, but the prospect of killing your father, watching the life recede from his eyes. Tht is something different. That is why when he finally does die, it’s is almost a sweet relief. He get tortured, doesn’t bother him, burnt, cut, slandered, all of this is the plan. And his death set off a series of events that shook the foundations of the world. So much so that we celebrate it today and glamourize it in tv and film. Notice he never gave to option to Ivar? It is no question Ragnar loves ivar, but imagine the disrespect Ivar must feel that Ragnar did not think him capable because of his legs.
@keiththompson95736 жыл бұрын
He didn't ask Ivar, because he knew the other two wouldn't. He rubbed Ivar's head instead of asking, cause he was who Ragnar knew would become the fiercest of the group. He brought him to England at the last for the same reason.
@seanmwhite1217086 жыл бұрын
Ivar killed at 6 I’m pretty sure he knew his sons pretty well. Ubbe and Hvitserk were his oldest and softest and Sigurd wasn’t on that level
@jameslove11625 жыл бұрын
@@seanmwhite121708 Hvitserk one of the softest? We've seen already that Hvitserk very clearly isn't soft, he's just as brutal as Ivar if a tad less ambitious. Do you not remember Hvitserk in York? Maybe Ragnar thought Hvitserk was soft, but if he did then he definitely didn't know his sons "pretty well". And would Ragnar see Ubbes rational approach as 'soft'? Floki would maybe see him as soft for wanting to talk with the Christians and have peace, but I don't think Ragnar would since he felt the same way. It really does just seem like Ragnar underestimated Ivar and didn't even consider him. First Ragnar tried to kill Ivar because he thought he wouldn't survive. Then he treated Ivar differently to his other sons throughoutnIvars childhood. Then the next bit of evidence is this scene, he doesn't give Ivar the choice to "be King". Next Ragnar 'asked' Ivar to come to England with him last, and in fact didn't even really ask. At first he just said "you're coming" which is demeaning in itself since it removed the choice from Ivar. Ivar had to demand that Ragnar treats him with the same respect he gives to his brothers and asks him - "not unless you ask me...". Then, this one someone has already said, once they were in Wessex Ragnar told Ivar that he *did* think Ivar was weak because of his legs, but that he now knows he was wrong (this realisation is *after* this scene). Finally, before Ragnar was taken to be delivered to Aelle, he told Ivar that everyone he ever meets will underestimate him. How does Ragnar know this? Because Ragnar himself underestimated Ivar. It really does seem like he didn't give Ivar the choice because he didn't think he was strong enough, all the evidence suggests that was the case. It would just be out of character if for this one scene Ragnar decided Ivar was too strong. The whole point of their story was Ragnar realising he was wrong about Ivar, to suddenly assume Ragnar knew about the real Ivar as soon as he returned to Kattegat takes away from that story.
@joshuajomy89215 жыл бұрын
James Love I agree with the most part but hvitserk is soft ngl this dude gets scared easy. Ragnar scared him in this scene and Bishop hegmund did the exact same thing and hvitserk got scared. He is a great warrior but out of the 4 brothers left he is the softest

Even an old and tattered Ragnar still had that authority and charisma. No one dared to challenge him, even when he was begging them to. He was still as fierce and intimidating as ever. The look he gives Ubbe right before he says “You wanna be king Ubbe.” Is almost like he recognizes himself most in Ubbe.

I remember thinking: Ragnar is coming back, after a very long time. I wonder how is he going to act, how is he going to convince his people? And was thinking that there is no way they are going to pull this off and the scene is going to be shit anyway. Then I watched this unfold, and was left speechless. This is genius. Travis is flawless, the writing and directing are on point, this is just too good. With Ragnar they never missed.
