I"ve had a Shorai Lithium battery on my 2009 R1 since 2010. It still functions just fine after 14 years. I have only used the specialized charger a few times after the bike had sat all winter. Very pleased with the performance. Hoping for similar with my R1300GS.

When I first got my bike 4 years ago I flattened the lithium battery by playing with the electronics for a good half hour. When I say "flattened" it dropped below the critical 10.5v. It's worth knowing that in order to revive a "dead" lithium it needs a lithium-specific charger with decent current capability (above 3A I think, the 800mA maintainers will not do it) as well as the higher voltage. Last I read, lithiums are said to reliably hold a charge for 3 months while for lead-acid it's 1 month. But I sit mine on a charger/maintainer when not riding. After 4 years mine has operated flawlessly but I live just outside Sydney Australia and cold temperatures are not normally an issue. PS I do like those carbon-look (?) panels. Wondering if something similar could be done to tart up the radar panel.

I have been seeing lots of 1300 owners on forums saying that they have had starting issues due to dead batteries. Your explanation certainly makes sense as to why this is happening. I will be collecting mine in a week or 2 and its really cold here in Ireland so i will be aware of cold charging /starting. I can see me swopping it for a lead acid in the future. Thanks for the great info!

Greetings from N.I. I have a 21 Triple black and not long after i had it i started it drove 6 miles to tesco for fuel then clic clic dead battery got home brought the car a jump started it. Short story the lovely tracker the BMW gave me for free had been draining it, so it's off the bike and in the garage and I use an Optimate 4 every now and then. Interesting about the Lithium seems more about the weight than practicality. Regards Robert.

One thing I was interested in is that most battery jump packs used to jump start your bike with a dead battery have a big warning saying DO NOT USE ON A LITHIUM BATTERY. COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS FOR US? Can doing so cause an explosion? Thank You!

Nobody seems to be able to give us a direct answer as to what you can do with a flat lithium have been told by BMW cannot jumpstart these batteries. You also cannot charge them below a certain temperature. They’re particularly volatile. There is only a couple of cells inside that plastic case so very low capacity. I have changed mine back to a lead acid others I have followed you need to get the software changed on the 1300 to do this, but it’s worth doing if you’re going to a cold temperature definitely

Hi, Love the Carbon Fiber replacement panels on your Triple Black R1300 GS. Can you tell me where you bought them? I have a R1300 GS on order, but because I'm in the US, I won't be seeing it until April or May so I have some time to start buying goodies for the bike. Thank you for your help... very educational your discussion of the lithium battery. It gets very cold when I live, almost makes me want to keep the lead acid battery.

You can order the R1300 GS With option 842 Cold Climate version. Then you get a AGM batteri.

Always take the Negitive off first and on last that way you wont have a circuit if the live touches metal

Nice video. QQ, what was that wire that was connected to the battery that you removed? What does that power? And does that mean if you want to change batteries, it makes it difficult because it seems like BMW wants you to buy BMW batteries...

It is one of two things. There may be a thermistor in the battery that enables an ECU in the bike to monitor battery temperature. Or if the battery is a "smart" battery then it may have an ability to communicate its status to a an ECU in the bike. The latter is very common in the batteries used in things like laptops and drones. POSTSCRIPT: It is the latter. Used for the "Battery Guard" feature in the BMW Connected App and to relay the state of the battery to the BMW Borg via telematics.

Interesting, so potentially it could have been the cold starts that killed the lithium battery then. One word of warning as well for your viewer's. DONT CHANGE TO A LEAD ACID. Lithium and lead acid charge differently. You would need to get bmw to code in the parameters for lead acid battery. Code in the cold climate option.

Those loose terminals and zip ties are all on your dealer as the bike comes from the factory with battery disconnected and no zip ties there.

I'm being told once you've killed lithium you've killed it. I'm also being told anything low 10% is bad

This is part of my worry with Toring. You spent so much time. Pissing about with navigation and maps with ignition on Bike not running for you know you've chewed through your lithium battery which is why I think a good battery to be Toring with is one with the partition To be honest, I must prefer the older Lead acid is robust you can't kill it you can charge it off a truck it's not temperamental it doesn't mind surprises. It doesn't need to be warmed up before you start the bike. This new technologies is bullshit and it's going to cause some problems.

Actually the battery part may still be fine but the battery management system disables the battery and it becomes unuseable UNLESS you can command the battery management system to reset. This is being done on drone batteries that would otherwise be tossed.@@lifeisarideuk

@@lifeisarideuk No. 100% of the capacity (Ah or Wh) is available from LiFePO4. For example AGM there is only 50% available.

A motorcycle of the new model like yours that cost a lot of money from a company like BMW, should not have happened in any case, only charging with a special charger for lithium batteries and not a normal acid battery I would love to receive a follow-up video

Lithium batteries, have a battery management system when below a certain voltage automatically cut off completely to charge them connect to a charger, but run a second battery in line with it, and that will trick the battery management system to switch back on
